That is one way to counterbore the barrel, but why not just bore it in your lathe? It would be much more square and take a fraction of the time.

If this is an operation you have to do on occasion you might want to look into an old school plumbers valve seat reamer.

Guess they didn't know what a bottom tap is. I made a tapping set with a bottom tap ground to cut to the bottom of the shoulder. Most muzzle loading barrels are like 1137 which is not real hard and usually cuts easily. Good save and repair.

I have taps ground to absolute bottom and you can still cut into or dimple the face if not very careful.

Why don’t you just use a socket spanner on the end of the square tap. It works better than that set pliers

Barrel was poorly breeched by the maker.

Had to rebuild a switch in the lathe to cure the click but no run issue.

I have since found, from someone better educated in such things, that the barrel is a NM barrel. Its also a Colt barrel and slide
