Death Row? Not in the UK. The cells are totally different. Holloway Prison did not have cells like that. They are classed as a condemned prisoner. I think they made this for the US.

"The Trial of Ruth Ellis" in the Ladykiller series is a much better portrayal of Ellis and the whole Judicial Hanging process and incarceration in the Condemned Cell prior to it, and the film Yield to the Night starring Diana Dors is a harrowing depiction of someone in prison awaiting to be topped. The former is on KZbin but you'll have to go and find the latter one yourselves.

Not Irish as in the video. Could be said to be a refined southern English with more eastern Southern English influence which could include good quality Welsh educated. The refined Welsh can not be distinguished by myself as it is very similar to good quality refined English. But needs to be said as she was born in Wales and lived there prior to moving during the war to London. Cound almost be said to sound some what like Princess Diana.

Here in the uk, we had no death row, just a condemned cell which had a wardrobe in it, behind the wardrobe was the scaffold in an adjoining cell, there was never a long walk, jus about 10 paces to the trapdoor, it was a very hurried affair to avoid stress to the prisoners, it was all over in roughly 20 seconds from the hangman entering the cell to the prisoner being dead

Good performance by the actress, I felt this was probably a more realistic portrayal of Ellis than as depicted in Dance with a Stranger. However, Wrong type of cell, wrong execution process, wrong rope, wrong knot, no assistant executioner. The execution scene in 10 Rillington Place is probably closer to the truth. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6e0aHmcac5mbtk

@millyriley96153 жыл бұрын
In a final letter to Blakely's parents from her prison cell, Ellis wrote, "I have always loved your son, and I shall die still loving him." i just watched dance with a stranger online and ive seen it a few times years ago, but they ended the film where she says call the police, i know i saw that scence in that film so god knows why its been ommited frrom what i just watched

Mixed feelings here, I like the portrayal and the one actress monologue medium. For the purist, it is spoilt by the death row imagery and the complete whitewash over the hanging process. Pierrepont never met Ruth Ellis the day before....I would suggest that line be removed rather than suggest artistic license. One things for sure.... Desmond did have a lot to answer for....

Death row? Where was there a “ death row” in Holloway or any UK prison.... .
@simonh63713 жыл бұрын
There wasn't. Just about everything that could be wrong was wrong in this final scene. In reality if you take the point when the governess entered ''the row'' as being when Pierrepoint and entourage entered her cell, in reality she was already dead by the time the governess had unlocked her door.
@geezerp19823 жыл бұрын
there were more then a one or two felons sometimes awaiting sentence of death however officially there was no name like death row. In the prison system , it was called the condemned wing / cell
@simonh63713 жыл бұрын
@@geezerp1982 You obviously don't know what you're talking about, there haven't been ''felons'' in the UK for about 300 years lol. There were rarely if ever more than one prisoner awaiting execution in a British jail. Certainly no death row. The gallows was in an adjoining cell to the condemned cell which the prisoner didn't know until about 10 seconds before the end of his life.
@geezerp19823 жыл бұрын
@@simonh6371 wrong ! felon is not even english ! its french the yanks copied the english law ! felonies and misdemeanors were how crimes were divided until 1967 ! after 1967 it became indictable and summary offences . in the prison system there was a condamned wing or cell condemned felons were not put in the general population or in remand wings ! i can think of more then a few capital cases where there two condamned prisoners in the last hanging were two prisoners
@simonh63713 жыл бұрын
@@geezerp1982 I know that felon is of French origin, as are most words in the legal system - justice, judge, jury, assizes and so on. I also know that it used to be in English law and is one of those antiquated English words still in use in the US. As you say the name of felony changed in 1967. However I'm pretty sure that people who committed felonies in the Uk weren't called felons for a long time before that. Finally the last 2 men executed in England were executed at the same time, but in different prisons, one in Manchester, the other in Liverpool. Unlike the US there was no need for a death row because if a convict didn't appeal, he would be executed in 2-3 weeks after sentencing (three clear Sundays) A death row would have only been neccessary if people were being executed on a weekly basis, dozens a year in one prison, and that wasn't the case.
