Big fan of PA! What are the differences between carriage house and barn garage?
@PatrickAhearnArchitectLLC
@PatrickAhearnArchitectLLC 28 күн бұрын
Hi there @agedawson - really it's in the presentation. A carriage house and a garage may have similar functionality, but a carriage house typically extends programmatically beyond just housing an automobile, perhaps with studio space or living quarters above, and sometimes even below as well. In terms of barn vs carriage house, that's more about the exterior presentation rather than the structure's program.

It's the autumn of 2024, 5 years after you made this video, and black windows are still going in all houses around me. And I hate them all! 🤣 Can't wait for this trend to pass.

FYI: it can be tricky finding home insurance to insure your wood shingle roof - just might be worth checking ahead with your agent before getting one.

I love your design suggestions- especially your uncommon good sense to keep the project in scale with the neighborhood. The second floor addition above the garage - what kind of space would that be? Bedrooms?

Wow, this sure does sound exciting, thanks! we need more stuff like this. If you’re doing what you need to be doing and your shingles don't disappear within 7 days, something's wrong. Although it took me a bit more by go’ogling Kaena Ramingler and reading her posts I was able to finally be free lol.

Hi Patrick, which non-wood siding option would you recommend as the next best thing?
@Hello-zf5lq

Does Patrick Ahearn ever use James Hardie siding or is it not aesthetic and historically accurate enough for his recommendations? My impressions is he only uses wood and brick siding and maybe stucco - traditional materials. And if so, which color combinations of James Hardie would he use if he did?

Hi Patrick. Should I remove a chimney in a 1938 compact cottage? It would make the house more energy efficient and add floor space, but.. the architectural loss is of concern?

I'm so glad another small beach house won! Leave it to Patrick Ahearn to make the back of the home so much more welcoming. I entered the contest (numerous times) because we need advice on our 1,500 sq. ft. house in Green Hill Beach, Rhode Island. Hopefully, there will be more contests in the future...and I'll be lucky.

Hi Patrick, I have a small 950 square foot Minimal Traditional Levittown type of house built in 1938. Would you still dress up such a house on the outside or would you keep the landscaping and decorations on the outside minimal as was originally done when such houses were built? I feel like if I follow your advice, it will become a decorated Federal Colonial house and won’t be true to its original purpose like you say. By the way, funny thing, I have been naturally drawn to the landmarks you designed - Wellesley Nero Cafe, Beacon hill walkways, etc. anyway, my question is if you have any advice for remodeling or decorating a minimal traditional simple FHA type house from the 1930s.

Great guy. However, here is the flaw in his design philosophy - it is design for very rich white people while wasting resources and not being sustainable, kind of like the Kings and Queens of France and Britain, they belong in the guilded age and are probably a sign of the guilded age of today with huge wealth gap in our society, this design gets lots of money wasted on majestic houses that nobody really lives in for a significant amount of time. I've been to Martha's Vineyard, and people come to these houses for a few days, but they don't live there. They look like fifth or six houses for multi millionaires, or at least second or third houses for same. Notice how there aren't many black people there. It is like designing Putin's mansion and saying that is proper architecture, which is like being a Michelin star restaurant chef and saying a 1000 dollar dish is the real type of food.

I was wondering why all the houses in Edgartown are white and look perfect like from a magazine cover - well it is because this is the one guy who designed them all.. it’s funny I also intuitively gravitated toward the cafes and outdoor dining areas in cafes he designed in Beacon Hill and Wellesley. Well me and many other people. Now I’m trying to apply his ideas to a 1930s crappy cheap house I am trying to add curb appeal and historical accuracy to.

I agree. As an architect for 40+ years, this “trend” is very trendy, but seems to have limited applications in reality. To put black windows in a traditional brick house seems crazy. And sort of ugly. Yes, they look good in a white farmhouse. Or in a super sleek contemporary house. But you know, even in these applications, these windows often wind up looking like a big black hole in the elevation of the house! You don’t see the mullions very much, especially if there is tinted glass. I think white windows (and other colors) will endure, in the end. Because most folks live in normal houses of varying ages. And it’s funny, we’ve used black and dark bronze aluminum windows in commercial buildings forever. So where this revelation came from? Obviously the residential window manufacturers! Thanks for your post. JoAnn Moncure, AIA

It was also driven by social media and the internet. For most homeowners we live in a monkey see monkey do world where you copy what your nearby neighbor did or what you saw online.
