9:36 It doesn't make one "enlightened" not to have a family. It doesn't make one "free". It makes one empty. Not having a spouse means you're missing out on 50% of what it's like to experience life. Not having children means you will take your closest wisdoms to the grave, all for nothing.
@easlern

Let me challenge this idea just a little and suggest that people have lots of different reasons for living without a spouse or children. Some are unable to conceive, some are devoted to a religious order, some might be aromantic, but all are capable of leading lives full of purpose and meaning :)

@easlern Very large emphasis on *some.* Tradition exists because it is a local optimum that has survived through time.

Having a family doesn't make you enlightened either. Enlightened people realise everyone is different and what works for someone else or even the majority may not work for a particular individual. What yields fulfilment is the ability to be honest with yourself about who you are, what you want and then doing whatever makes it most likely you'll achieve those things. There are plenty of happy single people with no wife or kids and plenty of people in unhappy marriages and vice versa.

@@justarthur1788 Nobody claimed that people who start a family are enlightened. You're attacking a windmill. What I'm pushing back against is the notion that people who don't have children have "come to the epiphany that they don't have to be normies following a script". Anyway, this particular form of hubris solves itself in one generation's time, so go right ahead.

I would agree with you 100%, except for "freebie" women. I think a lot of people (myself included) will date out of boredom. She'll go out with you if she doesn't have any other plans, and a free meal is just a bonus. I don't think it's a deliberate "foodie call".

I'm a dev too. Can you please describe how much the webcam sucks? Also how is the trackpad for gestures? Is it glass? Also how much time would I get editing code, debugging, running docker containers, multiple tabs open etc etc? The apps I develop in my spare time are pretty standard (Spring boot apps mostly with some C++) 5 hours is kind of shocking.
@easlern

The webcam quality and clarity is terrible, ngl. You could probably have a standup without making your coworkers barf but it’s not a key feature. :) The trackpad is pretty nice, smooth plastic but it works just fine. I do get around 4-5 hours under load- I run 3 or 4 logins at a time, each with jetbrains IDEs open. I also have docker running, so I think your experience will be pretty similar to my own.

if anyone owns this model, I was wondering how it holds up against larger tasks like running virtual machines or dual booting kali with pop!_os. I just need to know if I should go for a higher preforming option.

Did you just the battery only can last 5 hours? They claim it can last up to 14 hours?
@easlern
@easlern Жыл бұрын
Yeah- 5 hours is sort of on the lower end. When I’m doing real day-to-day work on it. But this is on par with my Yoga 6, and I don’t remember the last time I used my charger while out and about. I don’t work in stretches that long. I think I need to recharge before the laptop does. 😆

I had the worst experience with System 76. I had the Lemur Pro and lasted 1 month past the 1 year warranty. They wanted $650 for a new mainboard. I pulled my ram and ssd out, threw the laptop in the trash, and took the $650 they wanted and bought a Thinkpad.
@easlern
@easlern Жыл бұрын
That sounds awful! I’m not terribly surprised by your experience; the construction does not compare to other machines in this price range, like the surface or MacBook Air.

I have a thinkpad that literally had factory warranty for 10 years because they would give me the option every time it got close to expiring to add 2 more years for like 40$ so i kept doing it and literally still using that laptop warranty expired a week ago finally. Thinkpads are the best laptops when it comes to longevity. On top of that it was on the original battery with 98% of capacity left after 10 years. I had a wireless card go bad in a thinkpad one time they sent a guy to my house and he took it apart and looked and then said that because it was soldered to the board they had to do a board replacement, they literally just mailed me in a brand new laptop at no cost to me and said keep it and then carried my warranty over to that laptop i have had like 6 thinkpads.

I bought a S76 laptop and have regretted it. The trackpad is phony. It pisses me off every time I use it. Great 0S. Great desktops. But their laptops are worthless unless you want to pack around a mouse. They know about this problem and they refuse to do anything about it. Instead, they want to sell you a 200 usd keyboard., which is ludicrous. Learn from my experience or don't. It's the truth and nothing more.

Based on my experience, your audience would be well advised to steer clear of System76 laptops all together. They are unusable unless you disable the trackpad and carry around a mouse with your "portable." I put mine aside. It's gathering dust on the shelf. I'm using a Lenovo chromebook with a Linux terminal. It's nowhere near as stressful as fighting the System76 trackpad. You've got to wonder about a company that has the gall to ship this product.

It’s been a lot of fun to use! The 40GB of RAM has been awesome; I need a lot of it and this machine has all I need. I also love how light it is. The main drawback I’ve experienced is the arrow keys; I keep hitting page up and down while trying to move the cursor around my IDE. But it’s great overall and I use it as my daily machine for all the tasks I can accomplish on Linux.
