I’m thinking about becoming a 999 operator. I’m just wondering how accessible. The software would be for me being blind. I’m wondering if it’s a possibility or not.

These calls always screw up because the dispatcher doesn't listen. They don't respond to what the kid said. They respond to what they think the kid would have said. The way he addressed the pt. was extremely condescending.

God, I love our 999 operators. They are something fantastic: so kind, calm, compassionate, diverse in speaking with different people. I remember last 911 calls from 9/11 and my fury over those operators who seem to not care at all that dying people were calling, brushing them off, talking to them in robotic voices.

I can stand in front of an ex Para, him high as a kite on coke and aggressive as heck, Knowing he could throw me around like a rag doll if he wanted, and talk calmly to him to deal with him! I could NOT be a call handler. Just listening, and thinking back on this call brings tears to my eyes. I have So much respect for all the call handlers, purely because I could Not do their job. (I also have respect for the whole emergency service family, but call handlers are special in my eyes.)

Sending the big dogg chihuahua from the room was the one major task I was worried about upon hearing the kind of dogs Mitchell had, of course, after he handled the situation and call so well. God bless them all!

My heart bleeds for the 999 (or in Australia 000) call takers. In my own role as a contact service agent for a (non-Emergency) government health service, we get this type of call occasionally, but thankfully they are fairly uncommon - it can really shake you up when you do get them. I know the emergency line agents get them much more regularly.
