This is fascinating. Thanks. I wonder if this mechanism is similar to polydactylism in cats (extra toes and even feet). This condition is much more common in cats than other mammals for some reason.
@LAQZL14 күн бұрын
Thank you for your question. The mechanisms of polydactylism and twin-tail/dorsal-fin, they have similar/dissimilar points. Toes and feet are not axial skeleton, so relating genes of these appendicular skeleton are differnt from that of axial skeletons (caudal fin). But due to the pleiotropy, some genes might be overlapping between appendicular and axial skeletons at a certain level. To know how are they related, not only evolutionary study but also developmental biology, both reseaches are required, I suppose.
@NoahSpurrier14 күн бұрын
@ Reading a bit more about polydactyl cats it seems like it’s a mutation that affects fetal development which can sometimes result in a birth defect. With these goldfish it seems like it’s a mutation coded in the actual blueprint of the fish body structure. At least, that’s my amateur interpretation.
@LAQZL14 күн бұрын
Yes yes. Something like that. The blueprint of the vertebrate (including fish, mammals and so on) body structure should not be mutated, but the mutated blueprint works only in the goldfish. Since the mutated blueprint cannot work in most of mammals, the "twin-tail cat" is really rare (or almost nothing such mammals).

So, as you can see, our marine station is like this. There is almost no public transportation service. What will happen is that students have to attend the classes in Taipei, and have to do experiments in this location. And recently, my car was also broken out (kzbin.infoUvw8YytCrDo). Some TIGP students are in our Marine Research Station, so, if you really want to do some, it is possible, but not easy. You see.

I agree, I am the member of the Goldfish Council organization based in the US and my research has always been to study goldfish and their unique physiology. Kinya Ota and Lei Wang (the other man's channel is Goldfish Corner) enlighten me the very essence of goldfish keeping and appreciate their modern evolution between contemporary past and present studies

Hello! I would love a detailed protocol for this if you have it! I am trying to do the same thing for a special honors project at my university. What fixative did you use? Did you put it through an industrial processor? Thank you!
@LAQZL10 ай бұрын
"What fixative did you use?" Bouin's fixative. I purchased it from Sigma. But you can make it by yourself if you can prepare the required reagents "Did you put it through an industrial processor?" I did the whole histology work by myself. If you are interested in the histology, please check this reference (doi.org/10.1002/dvdy.15). Although this is for fish, it may be available for chicks. If you really want to check the protocols for chick embryos, you may check this reference also: doi.org/10.1016/S0925-4773(02)00415-X, doi.org/10.1002/dvdy.20235)

這個可以當成中研院的研究主題嗎?

I do not know whether this project will be supported by Academia Sinica, as the proper project. But some people tend to ask me "Are there any environment-friendly ways to do research?" So, I did it. And, my conclusion is "Plastic-made fish traps are absolutory nicer than the organic material fish traps". If you really want to be supported by the Taiwan government, you can apply grant proposal to NSTC. Personally, I am a bit suspicious about most of SDG activities. In this sense, someone has to check whether recent SDG activities are truly realistic or not.

I'll say this first so as not to disappoint everyone. I will not be catching any fish this time. This time, as the title says, we will be "reloading" the bait. The bait was set with a mixture of commercial crucian carp fishing bait and 'Ajinomoto'. Ajinomoto is crystallized monosodium glutamate for cooking.

Hi! Can you tell me please what the green powder is that you add? And which species of Paramecium is it. Thank you
@LAQZL Жыл бұрын
The green powder is "Aojiru", "Green drink", or "Green juice". This is a Japanese vegetable drink. This is made from kale or young barley grass. Several scientists make green juice from Lettuce. So, if you cannot buy Aojiru in your location, you can use blenders and make green juice. If you have any questions, please leave your comments.
