Honestly as someone who works in a grocery store if everyone shopped like this there would be so much more food waste. We have to put the products expiring first in the front because SO many items get thrown away it saddens me. And half of the time they aren't donated.

I wouldn't exactly call this smart shopping. This is very unnecessary if you plan on consuming the bought products within a few days. Generally speaking, everything on the shelves is never past the expiration date, though mistakes can always happen. The expiration date is also merely an estimation, not a date after which the food automatically becomes spoiled (with exception for more delicate foods such as meats). Most foods can still be eaten even a few days after expiring if they still look, smell, and taste well. It's encouraged to always use one's senses when judging the condition of a product and not just blindly throwing it into the trash bin. What's problematic about always reaching for the shelved goods in the back is products in the front being thrown away whilst still perfectly consumable. It's a shame really. I understand people doing this if they're shopping and stocking up for a longer period of time. But people should definitely not make this a habit for quick grocery runs to make meals for the next few days. The amounts of food being thrown away at supermarkets is absolutely outrageous. I cannot stress how much pressure this puts on the environment and how much money simply goes down the drain. As someone who's worked in a grocery store for nearly a year, it's immensely frustrating as there is little we as staff can do about it.

WARNING check date then. I found (while working in grosery store for school) when I needed to date check. multiple 2 year over date baby food that way... 😢 bosses want workers to work fast 1 big cart in 15 mins. and then put all new in back. and help customers with questions in those 15 mins. make it make sense

If it’s not refrigerated or frozen don’t bother, canned foods and box foods sell fast enough in most stores they just stick by pushing old products back since the dates are usually farther in the future.

Literally only matters if what you're gonna buy would expire before you are planning on using it
