Thanks for the podcast Pete - brilliant. Jimmy Greenhoff, an unsung hero. What a player! I was in the Stretford End as a 16 year-old when he scored that hat-trick against Newcastle. I'll never forget it!

I loved the football we played under Big Ron. If we had signed Lineker in the summer of 1985 we would have won the league in 1985/86. He wanted to come to United as well but it just didn’t happen. That period of Big Ron is one of my favourite times watching United as that was the team I first started watching as a kid.
@peteboyle78933 жыл бұрын
We were favourites just ahead of Liverpool with Everton outside contenders according to the media. I spoke to him about 5 years ago over a meal & he hadn’t even spoken to United

I went to his testimonial against an England 11 at Old Trafford after the last game of the 1986/87 season. Very good goalie, such a shame the way his career ended at a young age. At 28 years old. He was just coming into his peak years at that age.

You can say what you want about Martin, but he is United through and through, he knows his stuff and he did his best for united. I wo der how many fans have listened to this and the other Interviews he has done and have re evaluated their opinion of him.

Hi Pete, thank you mate, that was a great Interview, I bet it felt really strange being face to face with such an important member of our great clubs modern history, and being able to ask so many questions, I bet you could have easily talked for hours 👍. I need to get a copy of Martin's book, I do enjoy a good read up on utd as Martin said, it's pretty rare for a chairmans version of events. I'm too young to remember Docs red army, but my dad, well its all he ever talks about! I swear he holds that guy in the same high regard my generation (born in 75) exclusively hold Fergie in! I share the same surname as Martin and as a kid the joke was 'uncle Martin', my youngest uncle actually knows him and has had tickets off him. in an another interview I've seen, Martin talks a bit more about the re development of the ground, and you really do then get a better understanding of the balancing act he had on his hands, a lack of success on the pitch, and new legislation off it centering around spectator safety and facilities. The hand was forced really wasnt it and he said we had no choice but to become alot more commercial, not pleasant to see in the fans eyes but now you can see he was right, and how lucky we were to have him at the helm. I know David Gill gets a lot of credit nowadays and he did a great job too, Kenyon to a degree aswell played a part. I read big Ron's book, and he said he had a bit of a row with Martin over the potential signing of Terence Butcher, he was told no money was available as it was already put aside for the museum project. What must have seemed a totally idiotic idea to the first team manager at the time, "what do I do on corners then!?? send up the museum!!!!" classic big ron! (I'm sure you are familiar with this story already Pete), the stretty was expensive but totally necessary to meet the requirements brought in sadly (god I loved that place) and all the work Martin was doing did seem mental to us the fans. I for one was taken in by the head keepy uppy of Michael Knighton in front of the stretty! even more so by Neil Webbs goal that day! Apparently the "Premier League" was being mooted at boardroom level as far back as 1986 I believe!, he really did have his work cut out. So really, it all came down to Martin's know how, he knew when it was time for a new manager and he got it absolutely bang on with his appointment of Alexander Chapman Ferguson! I'm so surprised that when we first decided to earmark Fergie that there wasn't more competition for him, maybe there was!? He did a great job along with Fergie eh, with a bit of help from Irving Scholar ex of the Hotspur, and Bill Fotherby at Leeds, thank you chaps for King Eric! as you say Pete, that was a proper "where were you?"moment, pure tele text gold, I'll never forget it 👍 it could so easily have gone a different way had it not been for those mentioned. thanks Pete, take it easy and be lucky

Completey agree. If we end up with just Donny it would be such a disappointment and we are playing catch up with the same team that tired toward the end last season. Sancho, Upamecano, Telles and a CDM would be absolutely perfect. Can I see that happening? No unfortunately. What I dont want, and I'd like your view on this, is to panic buy if we don't get Sancho. Dont think the likes of Cavani, Dembele or Sarr would be good business from a Manchester United point of view when you consider Chelsea have brought in Werner, Ziyech, Haverts, Chilwell and other. We need players to strengthen our first team and players that can change a game from the bench. Cavani would be for 1 season, Sarr is a cheap not so good option to Sancho, Dembele has been a flop at Barce. Just praying for a miracle on deadline day
