Sexual sadism disorder should not be taken out of the DSM. BDSM is not necessarily real sadism, like a real disorder because it's consensual, especially with the use of safewords. Real sadists would not be satisfied with a person to consent. That's not the whole point of sadism they this love power and control, and why would they want to be controlled. A real sadist wouldn't stop what they're doing to their victim. I feel it should be. Kept in the DSM because if you look at the cases and certain serial killers such as Lawrence bitticker or David Parker ray, they were extremely sadistic. Or just real sadist. I think because of Fifty Shades of Grey people tend to confuse what statism actually is VS just play. As for sexual masochism I feel it should stay in the DSM as well. Because some people who have the paraphilia, not the preference will put themselves in danger to get pleasure. Such as someone with. Autoerotic exphixation. I've struggled AEA for 20 years. And for what I understand it's pretty deadly. Life-threatening and dangerous. And people with these disorders couldn't get help. And I can speak from experience. Most of these people don't want help, but when it almost kills you are is hurt. Someone else where should be a way for clinicians to stop them. These diagnosis should be reserved for extreme cases and the impaired only.

Thanks for sharing great content. I have been studying the 5 character types in Reichian Psychology where the schizoid is the first - also called the leaving type - developed even in the uterus and the first 3-5 months of one's life. if your mother is unstable, on drugs/alcohol, depressed, stressed and burned out, lacks support from her man, and maybe overwhelmed by everything in her life or a combination. Traits as you mentioned in the video. Second is the Oral/needy-codependent type, the third is the enduring masochistic type, then the fourth is psychotic/hyperenergetic, and last is the perfectionistic/rigid type. The first three are developed pre-language and the rest are developed pre-conscious ego state has been established. I have about 25% of each of the three first and the rest on the two last ones. Wilhelm Reich's work segwayed into the work of Alexander Lowen and others. Bioenergetic - body-based therapy. Im sure you know all about this, and again, thanks for the inspirational video.

A good alternative name for schizoid is "bystander syndrome". Schizoids feel like bystanders or observers of their own life. This underlies the listed criteria of not initiating connections and not reciprocating them, alexithymia, anhedonia and flat affect, indifference, and lack of motivation, and occasional depersonalization. It does not occur to schizoids to be in charge of their own lives, to reach out to people, to care about anything, because they are just observing. It's not really happening to *them*. By excluding subjective reports from diagnostic criteria the DSM isn't helping schizoids. Of course it takes a long time and a lot of work to build the trust necessary for a schizoid to admit they feel this way,

True. They chat with you when they’re bored or need a sounding board when things go wrong in their lives, but on the very odd occasion you could use some backup when you get trolled they’re too busy or simply not interested, as any support might reflect badly on their own follower count or they d have to deal with the trolls coming for them too. Trust no one, stay polite but distant .

Do you have any research on ASD with comorbid cluster B personality types
@knowledge_sim

You failed to address that most professionals have a predisposition bias and stigma towards people with personality disorders, particularly ASPD. You can’t expect someone to willingly change when the professionals out there are often unwilling to work with them or actively dehumanise them due to their diagnosis

Kanner didn’t coin the term autism, that was Eugen Bleuer, who had already researched it in the 1910s. Another really interesting thing in autism research history is Grunya Sukhavera (from Kiew, she lived in the 1920s) and her contribution to our understanding of autism. She gave detailed explanations of the autistic people she worked with (coming up with a description of the core characteristics of autism that comes close to the current criteria used in the DSM) and also spoke to their family members to find more data for potential causes of autism (she made the connection to autism to being genetic and something you’re born with very early on, she never believed it is something that can be cured). A lot of her work got stolen by Hans Asperger, who didn’t cite his sources (her research) in his papers. I appreciate that you said that ASD traits often change with age, a lot of professionals and regular people don’t know about this. It’s really important to distinguish between ASD repetitive and restrictive behaviours and compulsions and obsessions in OCD. OCD is an ego-dystonic disorder, the symptoms of OCD are not based in what the person that has it wants to happen or enjoys. For example, an autistic person might think for hours about their special interest, but usually this thinking is ego-syntonic (just like the other RRBs) and makes them feel good, whereas hours/ days/ months of preoccupation with an obsession is ego-dystonic and causes stress

The DSM-5 didn’t completely change the criteria, there was mostly work done to include more inclusive examples, as well as new findings in neuroscience such as sex differences in ASD‘s neurology that led to a better understanding of symptom presentation. The criteria for autism was always the same: deficits in social communication and social interaction, also sometimes referred to as "An autistic aloneness" (by Kanner), as well as the second part that made up the criteria, which is restrictive interests or repetitive behaviours, also described as "an insistence on sameness". The "gender differences" seen in ASD are not explained by the idea that ASD affects male-sexed people more than it does female-sexed individuals, but rather by findings in neuroscience that lead to the recognition of masking as a part of autism, as well as the sex differences seen in ASD‘s neurology. I recommend reading up on Dr. Kevin Pelphrey‘s research into this, the findings he and his teams made. "High functioning" together with all other functioning labels is no longer used, they contribute to disabled people not getting their needs met. What you can use instead is "level of ability", since your ability level is more like a set of skills and made up of different areas, rather than on a scale from "isn’t really disabled" to "is very disabled", which is the ableist assumptions that functioning labels make. Also, Aspergers and level 1 autism is not synonymous, new research shows that the distinctions between "Asperger Syndrome" and other sub-types that used to be used for ASD aren’t as clear cut in practice as they are on paper, which is part of the reason why the new diagnostic system proposed in the DSM-5 is much appreciated, assigning a level of support based on where the individual falls in the two parts that make up Autism Spectrum Disorder‘s core criteria (Criteria A and B). So someone can be level 1 in social communication and interaction and level 2 in restrictive, repetitive behaviours. Saying that you want to "eliminate" self-harming stims when working with someone with autism is not the correct approach. Usually in behaviourism/ ABA therapy, the individual learns to replace a behaviour that could cause harm or is otherwise distressing with a different one, which aims to improve the quality of life for the person. Suppressing behaviours or punishing stimming is counterproductive. Autism is not caused by trauma. It is a developmental disability one is born with. - by an autistic freak that has a special interest in psychology, I’m not a professional/ don’t work in the field

I just learned today that I'm pretty much 90% Schizoid, after a little research. It sounds like one of those topics where those of us who have it are affected in various ways. For example, the part regarding not building close relationships with anyone. Might be true for some but not all. I have a partner and have been with her for 8 years and I'd say she's a Schizoid too. In our case, it's not that we're against the notion of having any friends or confidants at all; we're just not not desperate for it. We just keep our standards high as to who we give our energy to. No time for drama, stupidity, fakeness, people trying to use or take advantage of others, disrespect, etc...we either vibe or it gets awkward. I do have a couple of friends, and we rarely ever see each other and that's alright. They're introverts and have never had a bad vibe with and none of them have ever done anything to make me question them as friends, unlike others. Have known them for a long time, too. Never felt judged, looked down at, or unappreciated by them. Some seek popularity or social status; we simply seek real relationships.

16:20 i agree on having your child feel there way in the safe zone they are attempting to do. I tell my daughter its a safe place to go because i didn't have one as a child. If she can't talk to me yet, we can work on it. Very supportive when both parent and child see they are not trying to figure out where to go.

I see nothing wrong with the fact that you didnt go incredibly in depth in this video. This personality disorder is lesser known, or just not talked about as much as other personality disorders. I appreciate any amount of attention you give it. In the future if you ever want to go in depth on certain topics that relate to schizoid personality disorder, I’d suggest discussing the schizoid dilemma (possibly schizoid splitting), schizoid fantasies, the limerence that some experience (which can be a form of schizoid fantasies), schizoid self-concept (this has to do with how they are unperturbed by criticisms/outside judgements) and schizoid intellectualization. Concepts like splitting, limerence, fantasies, disturbances in self-concept and intellectualization ARE all concepts that do relate to psychology in general, but I’d love to see info on how it relates to this disorder specifically in video format so these ideas are more accessible.

Oh I will add that this is in fact an emotional issue, its just that a schizoid’s emotions are buried deep or suppressed, and they might express these emotions through ideas without realizing it. (A therapist might not realize theyre doing this either so its worth noting)

Hello Dr. Kaplin.I am from India and I am fighting against pornography as much as possible , especially BDSM because, be it the rapists or the major serial killer in the society, their active involvement in pornography is quite noticible.Keeping conservatism apart , my question to you is , exhibiting sex against consent or with pain is an enactment of rape or molestation in name of so called "entertainment and freedom".So my question is, how did you miss out the impact of it in society,specifically the youths who can't learn to differentiate btw physical intimacy and torture , and only gave an individualistic explanation in favour of the sadists ?
