The fact that Nikolov can set from practically antennae height can't be overstated... that's a lot of overpass balls Rowan wouldn't be able to play. Helps remove a lot of pressure from serve-receive.

I agree with this list, though I think Sotiris and Rama are tied for 3rd. Sakanoko will have a big year but he’s not top 5 yet. Cooper’s back row digging didn’t look great against that Italian pro team (and possibly NORCECA too) but he’s my #1 OH.

To avoid being a flip-flipper, I will pick Sotiris lol. He has so many more reps at this level. Rama is closer to 6’8” tho with long arms. I bet his hitting efficiency ends up being higher.

Henno still number 1 for me, setter dependant now Shewart has left. I’m not big on the UH outsides as painful as it is to say. Sakanoko last year was incredibly hit and miss in all areas, if Milan Zarkovich gets some good work in with him he has a high ceiling.

I see you guys saying nolan flexen should be on here but honestly, hes amazing offensively but his serve recieve is far too inconsistent compared to the other individuals on here. Especially in the semi final against long beach last season, his team gave up many points due to his serve receive and hitting out. To be a great outside, your defense has to be just as efficient as your offense.

Outsides have to be the complete player out there. I think Flexon will take a big jump this year in his game as an all-around guy.

@kevinong94714 күн бұрын
Both of those guys are tough to include in this discussion as glass cannons. The outside position is as much passing and defense as it is hitting. As we last saw them those guys don’t have that all around game in the way players like Henno, Chakas, Champlin, etc. do.

@mitchsterkenburgКүн бұрын
Siapanis is much better than Varga at outside, we've seen several years indicating his elite level of play at that position. We haven't seen that from Varga at this point so, this is a hot take. Siapanis was 1st team all-american for a reason last season.
@mitchsterkenburgКүн бұрын
I disagree.
@mitchsterkenburgКүн бұрын
Varga is new to the position, he's been a right side for the beginning of his LBSU career. All data and conclusive stats will show that Siapanis is the better outside and a top 4 in the country one at that.

as outside passing can affect the game as much as hitting. if you're taller, reach higher, hit harder on oppo or middle, chances are you'll start. If you're an OH whos slightly smaller but is more consistent on passing and defense, theres the argument to be made you should start, as long as you arent useless vs 2 blocks
@Statisticalanomaly174 күн бұрын
Serve receive is the biggest thing most smaller outsides at this level take more court which makes it easier for the other outside to focus on offense. Offensively they usually run very quick sets and work through around and off the block

Hey Mitch, do you have any recommendation on exercises or stretch of anything at all to help with the passing platform? I have very bad shoulder mobility (since I was a kid) and I really struggle with my serve receive and passing to keep the going where I want. I can barely get my elbows together on my platform when i really force it. It's really holding my back as an OH. Thanks in advance coach and congrats on the win
@jacobmilnazik34987 күн бұрын
Don’t worry about getting your elbows together on your platform. As long as your platform is sound/solid, the “elbows together” thing doesn’t really matter.
@mitchsterkenburgКүн бұрын
What's up man, to help with ball control you can pick a target on a hard wall like brick or metal and pass back and forth to yourself. This will help get the feeling of passing down if you continue to practice it over and over and narrow the size of the target. Like Jake said, you don't need to have your arms together when passing, it's ok if there is about 4-6 inches between them. As long as your hands are connected your platform should be in good shape. Hope this helps you a bit!

@ oh 100%. Exposure to higher quality competition at a younger age is what makes a lot of the non Americans players a step ahead when it comes to development. Rowan would quickly be on Nikolov’ heels as soon as he gets out of the NCAA bubble.
