finally a video where the double stroke roll is explained perfectly, step by step, building and helping the mind to memorize each and every movement and positioning of the fingers on the drumstick. thank you so much for this video, finally i will be able to practice with the right teaching to be able to perform the double stroke roll.

Thank you for this. I realise that when I try to increase speed, I revert to actually playing 2 singles with each hand in a sort of downward forced, almost buzz stroke of 2. Sort of works as in using mostly fingers. But there's a ceiling to it speed-wise as it is mostly fingers and now I realise if I'm to retain correct form as you describe up to high speed then I am a million miles away. This journey is long and frustrating. I return to this video almost daily at the moment, mainly for the comments at the end - 1 year...2 years...thanks again. Deep breath.

Thanks so much for your comments and I totally understand where you're at. When I was young, I did the same thing and just did Buzz Rolls instead of Doubles, lol. Once I went through the process in this video though, it totally cleared it up and you will get to a point where you can jump into buzzes whenever you want, and jump into doubles whenever you want. And, finally, no one is ever a million miles away - it's just time and consistency, and doing this process will bring the results. You can do it!

@@ferggriffindrums Thx, yes 2024 was my best year so far, I bought an e-drum in 2019 and restarted practicing, I use Superior Drummer 3 and I spent years tweaking the EQs and velocity to get the most naturel feel and sound, very happy about it too, also very important when I practice a groove or fill I create my own music with FL Studio, I never practiced my finger on the piano when I was kid at home but I know the basic minor and major chords and it's good enough to make cool drumless tracks loops, I can set the tempo I want etc. overall cheap stuffs but effective and quiet as I live in an apartment, my wife and the downstairs neighbours don't get mad at me lol

First thing to try is hold the sticks at the tips (the opposite end to where you usually hold them), and activate your fingers so that you are playing the sticks into your forearm/elbow. Can practice rudiments etc. like that which will really help. Is hard to describe over text but will def make a video at some point.

I don't understand why there are so few videos on the left foot, and why they often don't even mention how important it is, intermediate drummers are often stuck at the same level because they don't use the left foot, it's frustrating to have to relearn how to play drums as a beginner only to add the left foot, at first it hurts because the muscles are not used to do that, so the left foot is messy and no accurate, but with time and efforts, practicing slowly simple grooves / fills then more and more complex at faster tempos, it allows to reach a much higher level with a lot more control and accuracy. The fun begins when the improvements allow to play any linear patterns (grooves or fills) it opens to a new world being able to play easily 16th notes triplets, odd groupings etc. and create our own patterns at will, sky is the limit, but before reaching that level first we have to practice each pattern a million time with our left foot till it becomes a second nature !
@ferggriffindrums
@ferggriffindrums Ай бұрын
Totally agree with you on the importance of it. And, the lack of education on this topic currently out there. Also, I fully and totally understand how frustrating it is but don't feel you have to relearn absolutely everything; find the exercises that you find the hardest in this video: for example, you may find 16th notes with quarter note hats really easy but 16th note triplets with 8th note hats hard. Focus on the exercises that are hardest for you and make those your strength 💪 And, like I say in this video, just start tapping your foot all the time when you're listening to music. That will allow you to start to feel the pulse with your left foot which will help everything else! Then, once your comfortable, play through the section where we go through the subdivisions with 8th note hats; that may be the best exercise in this whole video. That will give you the freedom to be able to just create on the instrument whilst keeping your left foot going. Try the Groove exercises too (the first one to begin until you've got that down). Once you're comfortable playing downbeats in most common grooves, transitioning to a fill while keeping that foot going should be easier. And, you're absolutely right on slowly increasing the tempo. We all have a decent physical capability (generally speaking) so focussing on the pattern (i.e. keeping that hat going), until it becomes natural is really the only goal. Once that is comfortable, everything you already know and the speed you have already developed will all still be there :) Finally, 100% on when it gets fun. I find that every time I learn a new technique. It sucks to begin, but once you start to get it and start nailing it, damn it's fun and rewarding. All the very best man and hope this helps!

Now I can play almost any pattern with my left foot going and if I can't play the pattern yet I can learn it quite fast, I'm really having fun since I'm comfortable with my left foot that's why I wrote that comment (struggling because english is not my mother tongue) to encourage drummers, to tell them don't skip that important part or you won't be able to reach the next level, oh and I forgot to mention : beginners should learn how to use their hi-hat foot as soon as possible !

Damn you! This is way too good not to practice. I've been putting off triplets for a while now until I get better just at playing normal 1/8 and 1/16th notes. Thank you for this! I read on the comments about someone talking about your left leg. Must be keeping time of something like that. I see that a lot but I don't (or shall I say can't) do that. Is that something I should work on now as a beginner or will that come with time? Thanks again for this excellent video
@ferggriffindrums
@ferggriffindrums Ай бұрын
Haha, thanks man 🙏 I definitely reckon getting pretty comfortable with 8th and 16th notes is more important to get down first. But, it's great to start trying these too; just make sure if you're at the start of your journey you practice them really slowly. Some Apps, like Polynome for example, will allow you to plug 16th note triplets in so when you play along to them at something like 40 BPM, it's easier to stay in time. This is a good way to start getting familiar with them at the beginning 💙 For normal triplets, 70 BPM should be a good spot and easier without the help of an app :) In terms of your left foot and keeping time with the hi-hat, I would say definitely don't worry about that at the beginning. It will come with time, 100%. But, something I did to help build that up was just tap my left foot when I was listening to music, lol. I'd just consistently do it for ages and my body started to internalise the motion, so then when I came to do it whilst I was playing it was a lot easier. Hope that helps!
