Nice shot of your left hand, Paul. We rarely get that kind of view in a fiddle vid. Also, I like the way you have a variety of local musicians playing along with you in these tune of the week videos.

Calico! I like that lower tuning. I would even learn this one in calico G tuning (GDGB).

G calico would be a good choice. Have you ever tried F calico? I'm thinking you might really like it.

Lovely like always... But why A=415? That's just evil (said the harmonica player)
@PaulKirkFiddle
@PaulKirkFiddle 11 күн бұрын
Thank you, Jet. A415 makes the fiddle resonate and respond differently. Also good for a more archaic sound. I played in early music ensembles for a good part of my life, and the lower pitch is more relaxing to my ears.

I'm confused, where can I get the sheet music for this fiddle style of Sweet Marie?
@PaulKirkFiddle
@PaulKirkFiddle 18 күн бұрын
You won't find sheet music as I'm playing this here as it's my own way of playing the tune. Email me to discuss the possibility of me transcribing it for you. Email address is at the end of my TOTW videos.

Hi, Katie! This is wonderful, and thank you for the kind words. The only recording of Mr. Locke that I know of is an unknown/untitled hornpipe at the British Library Sound Archive. I haven't been successful in hearing it on the Internet, but perhaps you might try. I wish you success!

Violas should really be played upright, like small cellos or violas da gamba. Then they could be built large enough to fully bring out the lower tones of this magnificent and undervalued instrument.
@PaulKirkFiddle
@PaulKirkFiddle 2 ай бұрын
Hi David, the viola belongs to the family of instruments originally classified as "da braccio"--on the arm---as opposed to "da gamba"--on the leg. It would be worthwhile to explore playing mountain music on the tenor viol. I do "fiddle" on the cello in the manner of playing the bass viol--no end pin and with an underhand (German) bow grip. kzbin.info/www/bejne/faCsp4N4gayVodksi=t10eXG96NHKQNJNi
