A tourist trap I recently experienced was about Swiss railway (SBB) who tend to indiscriminately fine passengers who activated the Swiss pass just a little bit late with excessive fine. I was handed a 158 CHF fine ticket by the ticket controller without even asking me any question (e.g. if it was my first time). According to SSB website such a high fine should be for repeated offenders. Later, I found out the abusive habit of SBB ticket controllers from many internet groups and decided to make an in-person trip to the SBB office to complain (as the SBB tel line is always engaged). The funny thing was the staff in SBB office after hearing my case immediately and apologetically reduced my fine to 30 CHF. Instead of having time to sight-seeing, I spend a lot of my time in Switzerland complaining to SBB. This not only wasted a lot of my time but leave a really bad taste in my mouth. So watch out for this abusive action from SBB. Take care.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience, it’s the first time I am personally hearing something like this. We have had a lot of people buy the Swiss Travel pass including us but haven’t faced this issue. I believe this has something to do with activating your Swiss travel pass, this does need to be activated before you use it e.g. on the day of travel before you board the train,bus,tram or funiclar. It should be mentioned on the terms and conditions. I know it can be easily overlooked though. Swiss are very strict with rules and so you can get fines if rules or terms aren’t followed. For example, we have seen sometimes passengers sit in first class when they have second class Swiss travel pass and they have been handed fines on the spot. Once again, I am very sorry to hear about your experience. Switzerland is a beautiful country and it’s a shame you didn’t have time to see it due to the issues.

@@TandAJAdventures Thank you so much for taking your time to read my story and giving me advices. Switzerland indeed is a beautiful country and I would say most people I met were friendly. Since my experience with SBB was so bad that I made a complain via their official e-mail. To my utter surprise, they replied that since I already paid the fine, they consider my case closed and would not reply to any of my inquiry e.g. why excessive fine ticket was handed to me without even asking me any question. I do know many tourists who are not familiar with SBB system find it very annoying. Therefore, I would like to know if there is any department or politicians that I can contact to escalate my case. I am doing it for the sake of the transportation system of Switzerland and the tourists would be treated similarly to me, mainly for its improvement. For your further advise, please. Many thanks.

Thank you for your comment and once again, I am so sorry for your experience. Unfortunately, I am not too sure about taking this further. I would imagine this might be a good question to ask SBB directly. It might be worth going back to the SBB railway office if you are still in Switzerland and writing and official letter to their complaints team if there is one. I am sorry, I wish I could help further but they might just refer back to their terms and conditions and refuse to take this further.

I have visited Switzerland most years since 1971. Since 1972 I have always bought a Swiss Travel Pass. Re excursions up mountains, I am one of those who rate Gornergrat at number one.. It is tremendous value for money.. A certain line near Interlaken is not value for the very high prices charged. (You only get 25% discount with the Swiss Travel Pass.)

Ahhh that’s is so amazing to hear, it seems you love Switzerland as do we but definitely haven’t visited as much as you. Ahh we double checked the website and it states you definitely get 50% with a Swiss travel pass on the Gornergrat. Which train are you referring to for 25% please?
@Fan652w
@Fan652w 13 күн бұрын
@@TandAJAdventures 50% is the normal discount rate for holders of the Swiss Travel Pass on mountain lines, and that is the discount which I know I get when going up to the magnificent Gornergrat. At peak times I would pay about 50 Franks. If I go up to the ''Top Rip-Off of Europe' I would currently be paying with an STP (I think) 160 Franks for a ride much of which is in tunnel. ('Rip-Off' is a British-English phrase for a price which is far too high for the g0ods or services you get in return.)

@@Fan652w ahh I see i believe you are talking about the Jungfrau train line. Yes absolutely that is the only train you don’t get 50% off its usually 25% and you can get cheap deals for going first thing in the morning. And yes you are right rip off is the British phrase to use 😂

Hey, we agree that the food we ate on this trip wasn’t rhetorical healthiest. However, we must mention that we have a very strict food dietary requirements and can only eat specific meat and chicken! Hence, we eat vegetarian things. When it’s hard to find places that meet your specific cooking needs, it’s hard to eat out and so we go for margarita pizza usually. Which isn’t healthy but it’s something to keep us going.

A lot of people would say 'do not rent a car' get a Swiss Travel Pass. Swiss public transport is the best in Europe, perhaps in the world. The thing which amazes visitors, even from Japan, is the Taktfahrplan. .Every line and route of significance has AT LEAST AN HOURLY SERVICE 365 DAYS A YEAR. All services (buses, trains and boats etc) are timed to interconnect. There are a significant number of villages you cannot drive to. Zermatt, Wengen and Murren are the best known examples,. And the person doing the driving must watch the road, not the scenery. And Swiss mountain roads do have lots of bends!

Hi I bought the Swiss Travel Pass already, I know i cannot reserve a seat on the phone or website unless it is for like golden train...gotthard...., for another normal local train, should i just get in the train and seat anywhere without ppl? or i need to reserve a seat on the service counter at the train station before on boarding? is there a gate to scan the STP before on boarding? I really want to know the process and I have concerns if no seat reservation, my family have to stand on the train for 1 -2 hours.....

Hello, Did you buy the Swiss travel pass using the link we provided? If so you don’t have to worry, it should be all fine as we have had a couple of people buying using our link and it’s been fine for them. Regarding seat reservations, we have never reserved any seat apart from the Belle Epoque and Golden pass train. You should be fine. The only train we were unable to sit despite having a first class train pass was the Grindelwald one because it’s the most busiest trains journey. There were many like us in the same position. If you want to be extra sure then yes you could reserve seats by going to an office but speaking from experience we have never done it and been fine. Enjoy your trip 🥰

Hello, Thank you for lovely words. ☺️ Ahh that sounds amazing, I should however mentioned that Swiss Travel pass is free for under 18’s as long as they are travelling with adults who have a Swiss travel pass. I wouldn’t recommend buying a Swiss travel pass if you are going to be driving, maybe a half fare card so you get 50% off attractions and tickets? It’s a tough question, personally if I was renting a car and that can be expensive in Switzerland, I wouldn’t then get a Swiss travel pass.
