I studied Anthropology at Durham University (UK) late 70s / early 80s. I love following the expansion of knowledge and understanding of evolution and social anthropology I can now find so easily online. . So much of what I learned at University has since been debunked as research has become more sophisticated, especially in the area of DNA. Sadly I still find the subject very male dominated and biased, virtually ignoring the role/ contribution of women in pre history and today.

Are there also options to take modules from other courses, outside of Anthropology? I'm holding an offer for the BSc in Anthropology with a Year Abroad, and I have a great interest in sustainable development, therefore I'd love to know whether I can also take other modules related to this (i.e. development economics, ecology)

Hi Caroline! You may take up to a maximum of 15 credits (that usually is one 15 credit module) from other undergraduate elective modules outside the department in years 2 and 3, as long as there is space on them and the other department approves your request. Just wanted to mention that we also run modules in this area that might interest you, as Human Behavioural Ecology; Humans, Ecosystems and Conservation; Anthropology of Capitalisms; Ecology of the Turkana Basin (subject to change) - you can find them in the Module Catalogue: www.ucl.ac.uk/module-catalogue. Do the degrees require science knowledge because it is a BSc? Would I need to understand biology to be successful in these degrees?

This is very helpful! Do you happen to know of past grades from an a level re take student are taken into consideration and can disadvantage an application even if current predicted grades are very good?
