I have done very little Geotechnical Drilling but I have done some. Most of my Drilling Experience has been in the Oilfield. QUESTION:: Why do Core Bit Manufacturers, Core Drill Rod Manufacturers, etc. list the sizes of their products with Letters rather than Numbers to Distinguish the Diameters whether in Inches (Example, 12.25 or 12-1/4 inch bit) or the Metric System's equivalent of Centimeters? I am sure there is a reason for this which has NEVER been explained to me. THANK YOU In Advance.

I showed this to my spouse who has been a Geotechnical soil engineer for 22 years and he was surprised on how antiquated some of these methods were. Infact, he has never seen that cathead devise at any jobsite. Still good watch though.

If you guys live in Canada, the cathead hoist is effectively outlawed there. In the US approximately half of every driller I know still uses catheads.

Thirty years ago i was running one in rain/snow mix, rope stuck to the cathead and sent the hammer to the top of the 27ft tall mast in about .5 seconds..had to climb the mast to unlodge the sob. I can think of five coworkers offhand (no pun intended) that had lost fingers and entire arms to those old rigs, they were all auger related. I almost lost the ring finger on my right hand once but my reflexes saved me, cut down to but not into the tendon. Rule number one of drilling- never drill alone.

How do you stop the borehole from colapsing?
@rossgarrett528
@rossgarrett528 4 жыл бұрын
By reaming the section of borehole drilled repeatedly, until the BHA travels without any hang-ups, by utilizing a flighted stabilizer above the tricone to smear the borehole wall and keep it straighter, by maintaining a slight overbalance with mud density, to prevent hydrostatic influx and lithostatic pressure from collapsing the borehole.

Im telling you what this guy knows about mud drilling you could write on the head of a pin with a magic marker. lol Anybody douts what im saying and want to know how to keep a good hole in all conditions and perfectly strait get a hold of me and I will teach you for a small fee. But you dont have to pay me if im not backing up what im saying. I'll show you how to bounce casing set of 2-3 hundred ft. That means when you knock off your ear holding the pipe up and it drops about 6 inches the casing will bounce because of how clean the hole is. I guarantee it. Been drilling for 52 years.
