How do you know how many bots to add? Per refinery chunk i suppose. Since you'd want to have X number of bots per refinery. I guess it could just be eyeballed to see if the chests are getting too full or too empty

Just got the game a week ago. Most straightforward oil processing tutorial I could find. Good job👍🏾.

Except that by isolating the network like this, you're highlighting the major issue with robots: They're good for a couple of things over short distances (until you start unlocking white science upgrades to them), but you ideally don't want one large robot network. The problem here, is that to really use this effectively, i.e. sending those barrels to somewhere you'd need them, you'd need either the large logistic network, or a combination of train networks and local logistics networks. Also, adding these extra steps means you need to set up an exact production of barrels. Make too few, and this is slower than pipe spaghetti, too many and you've got barrels every where, even when you don't need them to be. Furthermore, now, instead of just having trains (if you go the mixed logistics route) transporting your fluids to where they're needed, you're adding trains to transport barrels to drop offs, as well as trains to transport the barreled fluids AND the machines to both fill and empty the barrels. I could see this being very usable with a good circuit network controlling things like barrel production and fluid requests and such. However, a VERY large number of factorio players know little more about the circuit network aside from turning on lights. You're also trading one UPS problem for another here. Would be interested to see this set up when the DLC finally drops, though, as with all the improvements to robots and such, one massive logistics network might be a feasible thing, and this would really shine there.

Great video. I have a question. When setting up the pump jacks what I normally do is connect the oil to a bunch of storage tanks then connect the storage tanks to refineries. I wonder if this is causing the slow down of stuff building in the refineries. I should do what you did and connect from pump jacks directly to refineries and see if that works better. Or connect one or two storage tanks for oil then connect that to refineries.

doesn't work in 2024 February. Receiver chests have been removed from factorio. Now there are 'passive provider chests' and 'storage chests' . As far as i know, no-one knows how to use them. Robots are dead for the time being. I used to find factorio robots easy to setup; now they have been efffectively deleted

So when research unlocks Passive and Storage chests, they're useless because you don't have requestor chests?😊

Found your channel looking for some oil vids, and they're really good. Though from a production standpoint, as a headphone user, I can hear keyboard vibrations being picked up in the mic. It's much better in this video but the oil videos are really strong, I thought a neighbor was playing heavy bass music in their car. Out of speakers it's fine, or some basic headphones, but in my Artics Nova 7P's it's noticeable. Luckily I just EQ'd the browser in Wave Link to remove the bass, but just thought I'd pass it on.

Interesting approach but the video is all over the place: repetition, clicking frantically everywhere while really not doing anything, and for the times you do make something you don't allow us to look at it for more than 0.5 sec -- very frustrating. I'd recommend announcing (even in the big lines) what you're going for and then bring us there slowly. It was hard to follow, not because of the complexity, but because you're scattered around like if you were just put on the spot. I see big potential but you need to script your videos and trim the fat (narrative + video edits). I forced myself to get to the end of the video and see your build, but you totally overlooked the problem you tried to tackle. Input/output flow rates -- what are the numbers? What about pumps? Did your robot stuff improved on the pipes?

This is, by far, one of the most useful and concise tutorials. Thank you! Edit: also, I've only had the game for a day, so the spider and robots were quite a flex lol

The best piece of advice I ever got for fluids was, just connect the outputs to the inputs. Changed how I’ve thought about fluids since then.

Great tutorial. I revisit the game every now and then, and oil is always a bitch to figure out. This is invaluable.

Whoa there. 12:56 to 13:58. You missed a lot of stuff to show. You skipped over how to use a chemical plant. That comes before advanced oil processing. They have to learn how to make the chemical science pack first.

Hey there. I think you need to take a step back when creating a guide for complete beginners and consider whether the target audience would even know how to 'add fuel'. What is fuel? Wood is fuel? OK, how do they get wood? Where do they put it? tl:dr I think you are assuming a base level of knowledge in some parts of this video that absolute beginners don't have

I tried factorio, won 3 times. It is enough to build 6 refineries to produce enough materials to launch a rocket. What for do you need so many refineries and even speed them up? Wha is that for?

Storage chest has higher priority than passive provider. So it is also very important chest especially with filter... Logistic bots will first search in storage chests before passive providers. You can do without passive provider but not storage chest... In addition to above, for example while base moving or big upgrading, gathering resoruces to storage chests and depleting them first before passive providers are also good idea. Or if you want to finish all starter patch before outpost ones, storage chests are also good option. Your compact build is not ups friendly. You need to arrange and model your factory in such a way that, there should exist fewer requester and storage/passive provider chests. You need to be able to feed at least 3 assemblers with one chest so less ups work for bots. T shape designs are good for example.

I love this idea! although I think pipes and this new barrel way of oil prossessing are kinda equal in effecincy, I think some sort of hybrid setup may be even more effecient than either of them alone. Thank you for the ideas to use im my own factory!

10:11 I'm not sure if this is intended behavior or factorio just won't fix it? that you have to fill the fluids in storage tanks in order to remove all of them which will force the refineries to create the three fluids again. I was losing my mind on this, I asked help in the forums and they were not helpful. This was so simple to understand and now I can keep going to make more electric engine units, thank you!
