It comes down to experience. Father Nier knows far more about people and how to engage with them than Brother Nier does. Playing Nier Replicant for the first time, I had the same feeling that you did. The truth is, despite Brother Nier's arc supposed to be about growing up, I still find him to be more of a stand in for the player than anything else. It just seems like there's not much going on there. His changes are physical more than they are mental. So ultimately, I think the coming of age story doesn't really work. To be fair, this makes the change in voice actor between part 1 and part 2 work exceedingly well. There really was no adjustment period for me. I believed they were the same character the moment Nier started speaking. Regardless, though the original vision contained Brother Nier, there's this idea that makes him the "canon" version and this simply isn't true. Both are canon as both are referenced in the stories of 2 separate weapons in Nier Automata. Virtuous Dignity for Brother Nier and Cruel Arrogance for Father Nier. I think people just completely forget sometimes how nebulous the canon for Drakengard and Nier can be.

Such a simple yet effective menu for it's time. It works well for those with well organized, spartan inventories, but it's kind of a pain for the mage to scroll down their long spellbook for the one off spell in combat. Another positive is how this menu managed to fit inside a single player's window during 4 player splitscreen back in the 480p days.

A large part of why modern games simply don't appeal to me as much is that they don't respect your time or intelligence, and this is a perfect example of the type of power user feature games used to go out of their way to provide but refuse to now. The later PSO games maybe do in fact have too much going on to justify having this feature, but in that case the games should be designed in such a way that you'll have to spend as little time as possible worrying about items in the first place. It just seems like instead of identifying a problem and providing a solution, the modern mentality is to check off boxes and include as many things as possible even if they don't make sense.

I feel like the whole "lol Japan sure is wacky and kooky" has kinda diminished over the past 20 years. Mainly due to the rising familiarity of anime/manga and all the tropes and cultural context, especially with the sudden popularity since the late teens. That and, well, how much weird shit most have seen thanks to the internet (those weird-ass misleading mobile ads, memes, brainrot humor, etc). Having grown up with X-Play, its kinda nostalgic just vibing with it alongside the other G4/TechTV shows circa 2000-2006. However, its interesting watching it with modern context. Mainly just the way they go "lol wacky Japan" while having "skibbidy gyatt sigma Hero Wars Poop emoji" in the back of my mind as I watch those. Honestly while theres a certain charm experiencing a title without knowing the language (partially due to how our minds fill in the blanks without much context), I prefer having either an English translation or just learning Japanese to get a full experience.

Boy nier is less interesting or memorable as a character. His responses and dialogue is very "anime" and at times feels like he's trying to hide his true feelings and emotions, which makes it harder for us to connected with him since we ARE supposed to be him yet we can't trust his responses or remarks. I think they were going for less personality in an attempt to make him more universally appealing like a generic anime MC. I suppose this worked well for those who didn't get to play Gestalt. Meanwhile, Father Nier seems grown up, open with his opinions and thoughts, and has an actual personality which makes him an actual character in the story as opposed to "generic MC" that you're supposed to fill in your own thoughts or self into?

Yeah as much as I like Nier, the side quest stuff and how much you have to replay the second half of the game gets a bit overwhelming lol. I'm surprised they didn't address that in the remake, but maybe it'd be too much heavy lifting. I also think Ending A is a lot more standa lone in original NieR vs. Automata. I think the implication is that they love each other hence the kissing lol. But yeah given the age difference, and to some extent their relationship, the brother makes much more sense. Though I guess it's kind of a forced kiss since Kaine isn't really in a position to not take it, so hard to say if it's one sided or not. But I think likely implication is it goes both ways.

I have a funny history with this game. I played Gestalt back in maybe 2011 or 2012, I just know it was before Drakengard 3. I went to the trouble of importing Replicant so I could play that too! Only managed to get through it because I had played Gestalt right before, and the "decorative" English text in the menu helped a ton. I couldn't read any kana back then, let alone kanji. So 1.22 was a very interesting experience You point out a lot of the differences boil down to the dad being this sort of world-weary, often sarcastic but sure of himself guy, while the brother is much more vulnerable and uncertain. A lot of the time, the brother just makes an observation whereas the father cracks a joke or says something witty, and I think this shows that Gestalt had an *excellent* localization team The question then becomes, when 1.22 was being localized, should they have retained as much of the same personality as possible? I honestly don't think so, but it makes me question the localization team a tiiiiny bit. A lot of the brother's lines come across as generic or just more passive because, quite simply, that's your typical anime dialogue. How many times have you seen an anime/game/whatever where the villain explains something, then the protagonist just repeats what they said word for word in a surprised tone? Gestalt's original localization team clearly wasn't too big a fan of that, and so a lot of Nier's passive/reactive dialogue was altered to give the father the personality he has. 1.22's localization team felt that it would be better to maintain that passiveness it seems. Was it because they just got lazy and couldn't be bothered to come up with something less generic? Was it because they just felt that such a personality suited a teenager/young man more than a middle aged man? Maybe one or the other, maybe a bit of both, maybe neither. But whatever the case, I think it ultimately does serve the characterization better I can buy a big, strong man in his 40s being unfazed and commenting on things in a "been there, done that" sort of way, and acting as a competent unifier for the group. I can buy a short, slender teenager being scared and unsure of how to go about things other than playing it by ear. Reverse those characterizations, and suddenly it doesn't work. You'd have either an incompetent man who acts like a kid, or a boy with, well, the personality and world outlook of a more grizzled adult I think the way 1.22 did things was ultimately for the best. I think they could've been a bit more creative with Nier's responses to things, especially after the time skip, but it really doesn't bother me all that much. I have a love for both versions of the character, and I'm glad that 1.22 not only incorporated the DLC but added a quick conversation between Nier and Weiss. Just one tiny little taste of nostalgia for the fans of the father version of the character

I wonder if part of the reason as well is the general change and sentiment around Japanese games in the west. There was a pretty rough period late 2000s and early 2010s that people in the west were super critical of them for a lot of reasons. So possibly post automata maybe there was a feeling someone like Papa NieR wasn't really needed anymore. Thank you for the thoughtful response!
