Why 1x^0 Isn't anything^0=1
@MathByThePixel18 күн бұрын
Yup! So 1*x^0 is equal to 1*1. Which we just write as 1. Think about any constant term in a polynomial as a coefficient on x^0.
@ZDTF18 күн бұрын
@@MathByThePixelOHHHH the x was added I thought it was 1x^0 Like the x was always there So what if x has a value of 9999 or something
@ZDTF18 күн бұрын
@@MathByThePixelThnx
@MathByThePixel18 күн бұрын
Then it will still be 9999^0, which is 1. We then multiply by the coefficient of 1 and still get the 1 that is the constant of our polynomial.

those were some really basic examples. I was hoping for more of a discussion on what happens when the pattern is hard and different things you can try to figure it out. Like if someone gave you the sequence: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23,... then any mathematician would say "oh, those are the prime numbers" and tell you the rule and that the next number is 29. However they know that because as a mathematician with years of experience they've seen many important sequences and can easily spot them, but how do mathematicians identify new sequences with complex patterns that aren't just always add 4 or subtract 9, and how should students learn to identify similarly difficult pasterns? what steps do you take to try to think out of the box? Here's a few sequences, see if you can identify the next number and the rule (no cheating with the OEIS). Please tell me how hard you think they are, and how you would explain your reasoning to a student or someone interested in learning math: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 31,... 1, 2, 4, 6, 16, 12,... 1, 4, 10, 20, 35, 56,... 1, 0, 2, -1, 4, -4,... 1, 2, 6, 12, 60, 60,... 1, 5, 6, 11, 20, 22,... 1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221, 312211,... edit: I don't mean to be dismissive of your teaching, I'm simply really curious if there are ways of getting better at detecting patterns.
@MathByThePixel22 күн бұрын
No problem! I didn’t take it as dismissive. For full context, this is an old video I made for a grade 6 math course I was developing. The intention here is to introduce early learners to patterns, so I had to go basic. I have some other old videos on here of more advanced patterns (geometric, quadratic, etc). Time is a bit tight right now with the ramp up to the holidays.

For instance, when you had A+B+C, when you introduced subtraction, would the negative vector be the complete opposite of the positive one (e.g. C from above video)? Regardless of angle or direction? Or does it negative vector rely on other factors? Such as the orientation of A,B etc?
@MathByThePixel24 күн бұрын
I’m not sure I understand your question!
@evanjensen689823 күн бұрын
When you showed the negative vector, you just turned the line backwards, does it always just take a 180 degree turn or does it rely on the other vectors, like how an angle depends on another in trigonometry

I think calling changing f(x) to y a 'notation swap' is missing the point of what a function is. A graph is a set of points. To plot the set of points of a function of one variable, you need two dimensions, one to plot the variable and one to plot the output. We plot the variable on the x axis, and the result on the y axis. So the y coordinate of the point is a *function* of the x coordinate. For a given point, you are plotting (x, f(x)) on the graph. So calling changing f(x) to y a notation swap is not really correct. f(x) is the very definition of the y coordinate of any point.
@MathByThePixelАй бұрын
f(x) is the notation we use to communicate the value of the function at the corresponding x-value. In the example in this video, we are working with x and y, and the graph has y depending on x. The point I was making was that we can interchange the two when substituting a point into our equation since we know our points are of the form (x, f(x)), or (x, y). I would consider this to be a matter of notation.
