It's pretty tragic how far and how fast this show deteriorated in its last two seasons.

I looked through the comments to see if someone else said what I'm about to. Maybe it was and I didn't scroll far enough, or maybe it's mentioned in some other clip of this conversation. What if The Mad King was actually talking to Danerys the way Bran did to Hodor? That he reached through time into her mind and made her burn King's Landing?

I remember watching this and thinking Jaime is the bad guy in this scene. Now .... With what I know. With what I red ... He's the last true knight in the king's guard I can't wait to whether he walks in the path of cohren half hand or make a new life for himself.

I love Ser Barris expression when Robert talked that way about Rhaegar. He knows Robert is his king but he was good friend with Rhaegar so it had to be hard not to answer or say anything back

If Simon Toyne's weakness was he lacked stamina, why did Selmy go for a counter of all things?
@MorallyDubiousFrog

Most likely Toyne was worn down to the point Selmy could get past his defenses with a counter riposte.

this is such a beautiful, artful scene. it shows how Robert has spent his time - wallowing in bitterness and melancholia, memory and his own relatively egocentric narratology. tho he makes a few key observations and lays down a kind of bassline for the rest of the show. reminds me of: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHq9nXaNptV_fcksi=W2xMa4jgiAm1_g-p

You really get to see the inner turmoil of King Robert here. You get to see the part of him who yearns to just do what he used to do best…fight, be strong, and reap the rewards. …and then he starts to remember the horrors & the dead; and he starts to get guilty. Then he circles back to the living…and himself…and he starts to envy the dead for not having to deal with all the nobles & politics…and then he gets angry, and… WINE!

I like how Jaime gives Barristan a little look as he leaves, as much as to say "you're a more patient man than I am to put up with standing in the same room as this guy for more than 5 minutes".

Because they are Lannisters and without Tywin Lannister and his army, gold and everything they did and do for the crown Robert wouldn’t be able to handle the crown, that is something that hurts his weak ego and to sleep better at night he makes sure every Lannister is miserable

It always bothered me a bit that everyone was so focused on hating Jamie for killing the king, but worshipping Robert for the rebellion. Ned is the most hypocritical about it. He treats Jamie like crap for betraying a murderous psychopath, but has no problems being besties with Barriston Selmy, who faithfully served to the bitter end. They all respect a knight who stands by and watches thousands get murdered because he upheld his vow, but vilify a knight who saves thousands by killing the murderer because he broke a vow to do it.

Feel like that later statement about Robert barristan says encapsulates robert. He was a good man. He had a good sense of humor, had little patience for peeps being high on their own farts, and was under no delusion he was any better than any other man. He also felt genuine guilt for killing the people he killed in the war too. But non of these elements mean he'd make a good king. He ultimately took the crown cause, he had to after breaking the targaryean's back, and hated every second of it. The war didn't get his love back, nor truly satisfy his thirst for vengeance, and ended up ruling the land he beat into submission to satisfy both, married for convenience rather than love, always wondering if he should have handed that crown to someone better.

Am I reading this right? Robert feels badly about killing that Tarly boy?
@XSacredX27
@XSacredX27 26 күн бұрын
He enjoyed being strong, not mindlessly killing people. As time wore him down, he started to think about things, realizing how the Tarly boy died such a meaningless death. Part of what he was saying is that he remembers their faces. It might be guilt, or just seeing that face when he sleeps may disturb him to the point of thinking about scenarios where it could've been different.

Robert is the guy I felt sorry for the most in the show. He wasn’t a pleasant man but he was not evil. Just a sad depressed man that won his war in his prime. Once there was no one else to fight he was lost. Was born to lead on a battlefield. And the best ending he could have asked for was dying there. But he had to carry on leading people through politics. While the battle of politics is an Alien concept to him. He was use to enemies on the battlefield showing respect and chivalry. While on the Kings council he had to learn which one of his allies would stab him in the back when the time came.
