The place where Adams had these talks in Amsterdam was a disco in my twenties (now forty years ago). As a history buff I always liked that.

As a Dutchman I saw this film clip for the first time. I give guided tours in Leiden where the Pilgrim Fathers stayed for 12 years before they headed for Virginia onboard of the Mayflower. They took with them a number of Dutch customs. Should you visit the Netherlands some time, I’d be happy to guide you! Among other things I’ll you which US Presidents have a Dutch bloodline. And I’ll tell you how different our world would have looked should Leiden not have existed…..

In case you ever try to do business with Dutch people: keep it to the short and to the point. If they act like polite and charming like an American it means they’ve no interest and try to tell you no in the most polite way possible. If they act like the guys above it means you’ve picqued their interest and they want to do business with you.

I believe the word Dollar comes from the Dutch word ‘Daalder’
@neliz2k13 күн бұрын
Yes, the Dollar comes from the Daalder, which again comes from Bohemian Joachimsthaler. the dutch weren't the only ones using the Daalder, but they did bring it to the Americas.

The Dutch merchants where the among the richest people in the Netherlands, at that time. John Adams has been able to loan more then $10 million from the Dutch. He had been visiting the Netherlands several times. The Dutch were among the first nations to awknoledge the independence and birth of the United States of America, and the founders of New York -New Amsterdam as it was called, when under Dutch governance!

Before this miniseries, I never saw John Adams as being so knee-slapping funny, so dry but I assume unintentionally hilarious. Giammatti is such a master actor, I can only hope John Adams was really like that. A great transatlantic tour of inception American history.

It's not that Dutch people don't care about what he has to say but he made his point in the first sentence. Beyond that it feels like manipulation to us. Yes we are very similar in ideology, yes we are sympathetic to your cause, we're not stupid and we know you want something so please don't insult us by dancing around the subject and get to the point. That is how we think, it's not about money it's about respect for our time and intelligence
