Thank you for the comment. I had most of the parts required and had a o-ring kit. I did some online checking and you can check out www.blackhawkparts.com/ depending where you are from and get a rebuild kit from there. Hope you come right.

Some jacks are a bit different although they look the same. It sounds right if there is a spring and ball as the spring pushes the bb to close the hole and the pressure when jacking will force oil past the bb and the spring will then force the bb back over the hole to seal it again.

Looks great I like the red on it!! Why didn't you prime coat it first? The paint might not so on so well with out doing so. Looks like someone replace the thick washer on the pack with 4 thin ones. You still did a great job restoring it! Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up

Thank you for your comment. The paint I was using is a two in one (primer and paint) and it adheres great + it lasts long so no issues there. The pack of washers was most likely added by my late father in law and I wanted to keep those as they were. (sentimental reasons I guess 🙂). Appreciate the kind words. 🙏🏻🙂

I don’t know if this matters to you but I might suggest you cut back on how many times you show the audience an item. We saw you remove it, clean it and put it back together. Spending extra time just putting it in front of the camera and moving it around isn’t helpful or, in my case, interesting. In my opinion (which is not worth much to anyone but me) when filming this kind of restoration, less is more. We really don’t have to see everything to understand what happened and the outcome is the same. I wish you luck with your channel.

I don't doubt you will restore more planes in the future, so here is a little tip: When the japanning look as good and complete as it did on this handplane you should consider to save it. It is far superior to the spray on paint. It ended up very nice! The beech knob and tote seemed very dry and I think they could benefit from some oil prior to varnish but maybe the type of varnish you used are a penetrating kind? As Whitty's Workshop mentioned the contact/mating surfaces between the frog and the base are meant to be metal to metal and should get a thin coat of oil.

Thank you for the good advice Heseblesens, I do appreciate it. I might just do another plane in the future so I will be sure to keep the advice I receive from everyone in mind. 👍🏻

I always enjoy watching a video about hand planes 😁 I've rejuvenated a few, but I only do this to use them again, I dont make them look brand new or polish them. It seems to me you painted parts that are mating surfaces. The plane body, just behind where the frog bolts down to the body, there are 2 raised flat spots, that's where the frog seats against the body, these should be free from paint in my opinion (on later Stanley planes or lesser quality planes these areas were painted too) You left the back of the frog bare metal so I dony think you painted the mating surfaces on that. This is intended to be somewhat of a "moving part"...... the screws holding the frog down are slackened, then the screw behind the frog at the bottom of it (the one sitting in the slot on the tab) is used to move the frog back or forth to open or close the mouth of the plane. It hasn't ruined the plane if you painted them, and itll wear off in no time, just lettin you know for next time that they should be masked 😁 On some planes, those raised mating sections on the body are not level and when the frog sits on it, itll rock side to side...... if you find a plane like this kiss it with a file til its better, and with no rocking. That rocking could cause vibrations in the iron as it works. You seemed to use the David Charlesworth "ruler trick" with the iron, but it also seems you created an actual back bevel instead of jus using the ruler trick to avoid flattening the whole back of the iron. I use the ruler trick myself, David Charlesworth estimates through trig equations that the "bevel" created using his technique is a fraction of 1⁰, not enough to make a difference to how the plane works. If worked for long enough it will create a back bevel, this is only desirable for ignorant woods that want to tear out, they respond well to a higher angle of attack on the cutting iron (that's what a back bevel does) but it also makes the plane harder to push through the wood. I enjoyed the video, I could tell you dont use hand planes tho by how you treated some of the parts..... I know a few woodworkers who would probably cry if they seen you sand blast the plane parts 😂 I'm not making fun of you, I'm not saying you're "wrong", I'm trying to help you reach a wider audience by giving you ideas about what people like me would like to see 😁 but I am only 1 man so I cannot speak for everyone.

Hi and thank you for the detailed reply with all your tips. I do appreciate any feedback on my videos whether it is a compliment or constructive criticism 🙂. You are correct in that I do not use planes at all really, the idea was to just make it look new and shiny again. I will keep your tips in mind for the next one I do. I am curious regarding why the sandblasting is bad for the parts though? Does it affect the working of the tool in some way? Once again thank you for your valuable and detailed comment, keep em coming 😁
