Powerful! I can’t believe I’m hearing what I have been thinking for so long. I’ve never been able to stick to a church because I never got past a lot of the congregation’s blindness to their own cultural and financial capital. As a divorced single mother who had been freed from alcoholism and addiction for over 2 decades why did I get the feeling that people seemed to continually want to reach, teach and save me as a member of a church?! I already had a relationship with Jesus, it happened organically not within a church, I sought a church after. I remember thinking I’m listening to my pastor preach from chapters of the Bible that if I hadn’t read alone before I would have literally no comprehension of. There is the assumption that it will make sense, it was only that I had read the Bible alone, had a relationship with Jesus that I was able to cope with the imagining myself walking in 20 years before, how I would have been alienated by the preaching, the worship music. I left my church after I bought a male friend to church, we were dating and he was not yet a Christian but he was open minded. I got an email from my pastor that he was “very concerned for my walk with the Lord”. If I hadn’t seen a woman in exactly the same situation as me, but who had been widowed instead of divorced also who had bought her boyfriend to church who was not yet a believer, but he was welcomed and she was not reprimanded as it was not assumed that she was having sex with him? But it was assumed that I was. I saw I would always be seen through their lens of reality.

It’s really good to see discussions on the church, gospel and class. I found your talk much more palatable than the one I just watched where I saw a man explaining how to plant and church in a housing estate - and then went on to reference, addict mum, suicidal dad, unruly kids, unorganised and not task orientated mentalities - without once seeing the irony that all these issues exist in the middles classes but they have the cultural and financial capital for it not to derail their lives. He also did not mention ONE positive trait of the working classes in a housing estate and I don’t have to tell you what they are. Great talk - and good for you sticking with a church. Until I sense I am seen as an autonomous, full human being with my own relationship with Jesus rather than someone to be reached, saved, avoided or pitied, I cannot stomach it. I won’t give another middle class Christian the opportunity to get a warm fuzzy feeling because they stepped up and spoke to the poor single mum with 2 kids in tow ( with head tilted to one side usually and a weird smile ) Unsurprisingly the only people who did approach me were middle aged couples. None of the young mums my age gave me any indication that I too could be part of their group. I dressed so ridiculously modestly, angle length skirts and baggy jumpers so as not to arouse any suspicion that I might be after their husbands 😂. It made no difference. I remember once a sermon about the church being the body of Christ and how every part of the body being equally needed so to volunteer for any job. They said they needed choir members, so I approached the woman and said I’d like to join the choir. It was coming up to Christmas and they are my favourite hymns. She said without missing a beat or asking my name or saying “great!” - “are you a tenor or a soprano?” Or something like that! How the hell would I know? I was then given sheet music to practice…. I can’t read music. So I went away and no one ever approached me again as to why I didn’t carry on with it. The blindness to cultural capital is just so deeply embedded.
@tinygold772Ай бұрын
Wow - so you’ve just described the “indigenous” of councils estates as “drug addict mum” “suicidal dad” “unruly children” “a hard place” “unproductive and ‘messy” - you say you’ve recognised these sinful prejudices and judgements you didn’t even realise you had yet you have not used these terms to describe anyone in the middle class?! All these issues reside in the middle class, the only difference is the middle classes have cultural and financial capital to cushion these issues. Addiction? Can afford private rehab. Difficult children? Can afford paediatric and psychiatric assessment. Suicidal? Well that’s a lot easier to deal with when you can take 6 months paid leave ingrained in your favourable employment contract. You’ve missed the mark entirely here. You’ve also failed to mention any positive traits that result from poverty and disenfranchisement. Those being that the poor are least likely to judge, that the poor share limited resources with each other, even if that’s a knock at the door for a bit of milk or sugar! Rather than being unorganised or not task orientated, the poor seem to manage to navigate having to get 2 buses to a job, make it back in time to get the kids from school and then make a meal from an empty cupboard. The poor start their own community initiatives, volunteer as football coaches, try to revive a community centre or entire at least one building can be accessed for warmth and tea when most churches are closed Monday to Saturday. This is so disappointing as I can tell you genuinely believe you are being “out of the middle class bubble” but all you’ve done is confirm why working class and poor people never feel like fully recognised autonomous human beings in any church in the UK. The middle class always look at us to be reached, rescued and saved - you’re always looking down even when you think you are being so progressive

When I read his book republished by the Reformed in Lithuanian translation, I thought: “What archaic Lithuanian Reformers! How can you use the rhetoric of the century before last?!” And then I suddenly learned that the author is not Lithuanian and should know that his arguments have long been destroyed by biblical scholars, philologists, historians and other scholars. But he continues to mislead people about what the Bible says. I cannot understand why some people put their cultural homophobic prejudices above the truth of biblical teachings and scientific discoveries. How can you simultaneously talk about respect for the Bible and distort its texts to support your misanthropic views?!

I kinda think it's not necessary to explain why God is not evil because ____ . Because I think the biblical answer is we don't get to judge God, and God can do whatever He wants. Just like God doesn't explain to Job why he suffered, despite clearly not doing anything to deserve those sufferings. Like if someone says how can God be good when _____ ? I just say you don't get to judge God, it's the other way around. Because like I don't want to give the impression that his opinion is the supreme court of whether something is true / just or not. Because it's not. Like the person might say why did God allow slavery ? And he might add, well I think all slavery is wrong. And why did God kill children in the flood, and in Egypt, well I think that's evil no matter what ... you're gonna put his opinion as the Supreme Court of truth. It would be an endless explanation of things, some things the bible doesn't even talk about. And like some Christians even lie, or make up explanations just to make God sound good when the bible doesn't teach it. And no matter how good the explanation is, the person can always reject it - well I think letting young children die of brain cancer is evil, no matter what you say.

The beautiful theology as taught by calvinist must be understood in the light of the separation between Gods divinity and our humility.. God is absolute good, we suffer because of our sins.. the audacity lies in the judgement of ours telling God he is not just to elect a few unconditionally to be with Him for eternity.. remember predestination is done in LOVE.. preserves us in LOVE.. accept the acceptance, you dont deserve anything but separation from Him.. accept the paradox, the tension between His absolutely sovereign will and your corrupted "free" will.. SURRENDER and Accept the acceptance with a broken and contrite heart and reformed Christianity's theology will somehow dim the rest of the world.. as sure as it is, as guaranteed as it is, as sealed as it is... im waiving the white flag, so help me God..

@@michaellee9483 For the sake of clarity and unity, let me try to tie the knot on my point so you can understand my opening remarks. Matt Chandler is a man I loved and appreciated when I was an A29 pastor. I was regularly encouraged by his sermons and was thankful for his leadership over the Network. Then came all the racial tension in our country, most of it stirred up not by actual data but by the media. Matt, along with others, chose to buy into it and as a result caused great pain and division in the Body of Christ. He lectured us, he scolded us, he treated us like children who needed daddy Matt to come along and set us straight. In the years since, many of the things he preached about racial issues in our Country have been proven inconsistent with the facts. Did he apologize? Did he walk back his statements? No. Not once. In fact, he's still talking to us like we're his kids. Where's the humility? Where's the contrition? When is he going to repent? So, when I listened to this sermon I saw more of the same and it bothered me. I felt concern for the men in that room. They need a better leader. He lost the right to talk to them the way he did. He needs to be sitting in the congregation listening not standing in a pulpit preaching.

Read God's word. Read thoroughly and always consider the context. Consider who is speaking or being spoken to. Read the passage completely. Allow the scripture to say what it says. Don't overlay any theological system or presupposition over the scripture. I am so thankful to have escaped calvinism/reformed theology. I'd been influenced for 20 years by church leaders who believe it is true. I must follow what the scriptures say. And I'm so thankful to now understand... Reformed theology is false. Jesus did pay for the sins of the world. He loved to the uttermost . Unfortunately not everyone loves/believes Jesus and they will be condemned because of their unbelief. (Sins have been paid for) Repent and believe...search for Him with your whole heart. Acts 17 says He is not far from any one of us. Who do you say Jesus is?

@perrymckinnon22207 ай бұрын
@@gp1284 It's a common misconception that reformed theology makes us robots. I can assure you it does not. (Did you listen to Piper's sermon or are you just commenting on the title?) Reformed theology teaches that when it comes to choosing Christ over our sin we will always choose sin. As Ephesians says, "We are by nature children of wrath..." The only way we will choose Christ is if God by an act of grace enables us to choose him. We are spiritually dead and he has to make us alive. This is called regeneration and it is solely and completely an act of God. We play no part in it.
@gp12847 ай бұрын
I did listen to this entire message. I agree we are sinners by nature and practice. We are lost without Christ and without hope. But, I do believe along with the Apostle Paul that the Gospel is the power of God for salvation for all who believe. There is power in that proclamation. And as Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. I do not think the Bible says we are regenerated before belief. Can you tell me where is the verse that says regeneration comes first?

@mikebrown98507 ай бұрын
indeed predestination is a biblical doctrine. You just don’t understand it. Your idea makes God a “respecter of persons”, of which He most assuredly is not (Acts 10:34). Your idea limits salvation to a select group. God says He will have ALL men to be saved(1 Timothy 2:4). But every man in his order(1 Corinthians 15:22-23). Christ did not come to earth on a soul saving campaign. He came for several reasons. One specifically was to call out His church(singular, Matthew 16:18) from the world for a specific purpose(Romans 8:28). You don’t yet comprehend what that purpose is. Neither does the presenter of the video. Nor do you yet understand God’s purpose for creating man. You will, but every man in his own order.

You must remember how old he is and how many times he has proclaimed Jesus. Imagine trying to give a presentation hundreds and hundreds of times, such that you have to peel the scab or callus off of and separate yourself from rote repetitions... And he does this because it's what God's commands to do with Joy. Therefore, there's a sense of tension in honoring God -while ringing out emotion for the umpteenth time. There's a sense in the business and organizational aspect of evangelism and church organization that John Piper hates (this is commonly known from following his ministry)... even though it is authentic because churches are collective organizations. And Piper has maintained partitions to not confuse the two -however... being grieved by the organizational part. The comments of snipers coming through are quite discouraging and thus it would be hard to maintain authenticity because of the depraved nature of "Christians" who are going to hell. This should make anyone sad
