This guy's setup is very deceptive returning a flat ball when blocking or lobbing Waldner's high spin loops. Waldner could not adapt till the end, his second loop often hit the net. Waldner expected some of his immense spin to be returned, closed the racket for the second loop, but the ball came dead and fell into the net. It's not an anti rubber, there are some combos of fast blades and tacky rubbers which produce such a cheater's effect. Even Waldner is vulnerable to deceptive equipment.

2 of my favorite legends of table tennis with complete different play. Tt was great back in the 90s, with the 21 pts system, cellu and smaller balls, masked serves, glue booster. Everything which made this sport so intense has been thrown away. And the result is that every year less and less players in clubs

@@JulienGaudfroy yes you are right I saw my mistake after. Those guys were still symbols of the previous table tennis. Maybe they didn't care about those changes who knows... They had to do with it as professional players anyway. But most of the guys I played with didn't appreciate those new rules and material, even if we had to accept it.

@ledorzejean-etienne3747 it is important not to be biased either. I don't think table tennis is less popular with the new plastic ball, numbers don't lie, even outside of China table tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world, more than in the nineties. The new ball allows for more exchanges and less discouragement at the amateur level than with the serves and crazy spin of the 38mm era, so more fun at the end for most people. In terms of pure beauty of the game, I actually think the 40 celluloid ball era was the best to watch, it allowed more crazy and beautiful exchanges than the 38mm ball, but still allowed for many more different styles than today at the highest level. Comparatively players today have all similar styles, choppers/defenders/blockers have basically disappeared from the top 50.

In case anyone's wondering, Ma Lin won 3-2 by scores of 21-19, 21-13, 10-21, 14-21, 21-19. Incredibly enough, Liu Guozheng scored six more points than Ma, but when it mattered the most, Ma Lin had the edge.

Yes it was, and JOW was one of the best at it. Timo Boll said Waldner was the toughest server he ever played against. It's clear in this match that Ma was thoroughly trained to read everything; Chinese coaches leave nothing to chance.

It was legal to hide your serves till late 2002, the serve rule changes went into effect around September 2002. This match is probably 2001 or 2002, judging from the fact that Waldner is using the Waldner Senso Carbon here instead of the Dicon.
