Wow, this is so interesting! I love this piece of music, it stops me in my tracks whenever I hear it. I had no idea about it's really history, just the Mozart concoction. The famous version might have been a mistake, but what glorious and wonderful mistake that was!

This piece has been sang, used, manipulated, for centuries. It has moved to tears tens of generations, created legends, impacted the church, it has united the believers and the atheists, it has inspired love and compassion. This is called being alive and alone, this piece did what religion can’t do.

This fascinates me. I've always thought that the Miserere was a beautiful piece of music - yet it always seemed strangely incomplete to me. As if the composer had been wonderfully inspired, but hadn't had time to finish it. There's an old saying "a work of art is never completed, only abandoned" - and this seemed abundantly true of this piece of music. Therefore, thanks for this - I will listen to it again and again.

Thats why the church never wanted the song to be copied before mozart came along. They were trying to avoid this.

What ?? The greatest classic of all time was written by a mistake ? With respect , the original one was a bit plane. Imagine if greats like Mozart , Isac Newton , DaVinci had this kind of mistakes happen to their work . We 'd be living on the moon already .

Perhaps a little nudge of divine intervention perfected this masterpiece...The Higgenbottom and Voces8 renditions are also both divine renderings for anyone searching for continuing choral perfection.

PROFOUND THANKS TO THE MARIAN CONSORT FOR ONE OF THE MOST FANTASTIC MUSICAL EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. We had the transformational, transcendent experience of hearing them perform in Duke chapel in Durham, NC a few months ago. I don't know if the Consort had previously performed in Duke Chapel -- but the director seemed very pleased with the venue, the acoustics, and the very enthusiastic reception they received. Guessing he may not have known quite what to expect to find in North Carolin... WHY did we stop performing music like this? I can only describe the experience as being like lying on soft grass under big leafy trees on a pleasantly warm day with the sunlight flickering gently over your face. It was THE most relaxing experience and put both my husband and I in truly "altered state" -- as if we were meditating. It was beyond calming and healing. When they broke for intermission, we both opened our eyes and blinked at each other -- we'd honestly emerged from the most beautiful trance. If you're seeking a calming, mind-altering, healing experience -- I'd strongly suggest playing recordings of early Renaissance music by the Marian Consort before you pay money for "substances"! BTW: you do not have to be knowledgeable or familiar with this genre of music to love hearing the Consort. And the explanations that were provided for the pieces -- why they were interesting/different/breakthroughs in their day, etc. were excellent and helped our "untrained ears" appreciate them much more!

So envious of their lutenist's long, lithe fingers that played so beautifully! (My shorter fingers struggle with barred chords when I play classical guitar.) Beautiful piece. Well done. Thank you.

Mistakes are one of the keyfactors for creativity ... This is a great story. The high C helped me loving the whole song. The first few times of listening to it, I was unable to memorise anything at all but this single note. Months later parts of the whole song appeared in my steady flow of imagination and I had to find it again, and I melt down by the beauty of Miserere mei and the amount of feelings of decency and the urge for love, that many excellent singers are giving.

Well argued, but the performance does not carry through. The unique purity of the voice of a prepubescent boy soprano, unmatched by women or castrati, is missing here. And please, no vibrato in a Gregorian chant!
