I've been meaning to set up some instances of Fediverse services. I disagree with you about X. I think X is a pretty interesting place. I also agree that the algorithm is designed to keep you engaged, and that's not necessarily a good thing. I remember LJ (LiveJournal) and I really liked LJ. It's mostly dead nowadays. But, one thing I did like was the simple way it presented stuff to me instead of trying to keep me engaged. It reminds me of what you talk about with Mastodon. But, my use of the Fediverse is (for me) gated on running my own instances myself.

So the Fediverse is growing, you say. Does it grow as fast as KZbin? Or Facebook (bad example...)? Or TikTok? People (consumers) go where the bigger content creators go and they go where the money is (because they have businesses and need to pay people and themselves). Convenience will always win and the Fediverse is not convenient. At least not in the same way Facebook/Meta is. I would love nothing more than for the Fediverse to become the number 1 in terms of content platforms (because that is imho the more appropriate term for social media). But it ain't gonna happen. Or if it does, the Fediverse will literally become the next Meta and suffer the same problems and die the same death. As long as capitalism is a thing the Fediverse is not here to rule them all. Think about Cypher. He wanted back in. Why? Convenience. It was just so much cosier in Mark Zuckerbergs lap, than out there....

I generally agree with the promise of fediverse as a concept. But also pretty much every time I've actually tried any modern social network that I felt was "doing it right" my next thought was "why isn't this just an RSS feed instead?" It feels like people don't know about RSS feed readers and how useful that is for following blogs and podcasts. And since a lot of social media is functionally just microblogging, it should have just... been that. That or an email mailing list. (Also I ended up giving the video a dislike because the whole section around 11 minutes in started grating on me enough that I was like "why am I even listening to this? I'm not going back to X, my Bluesky is being held on tight lock to only a few people I completely trust, and I don't want to listen to somebody complaining about all the things they don't like instead of telling me about cool things they like that I might like. I was turned off by the Fediverse when I saw server operators blocking other servers because they didn't want to see people from that server. It was largely driven by political differences. While I can understand why somebody on the far left might not want to hear something from somebody on the far right, if you go around and out-right blocking entire peer servers, it will ultimately become an echo chamber. Worse, it isolates some people. I just don't agree with ostracizing any segment of our society, even the ones I with whom I disagree. One Fediverse Android app refused to put any blocking into his client and I really appreciated that. But much to my amazement, people actually gave him low-rated reviews just because he disagreed that his app should be the source of content blocking.

Back in the day when internet was starting to gain popularity, there were IRC chats and message boards. People who were there were enthusiasts, scientists, IT people and other who got into the internet and wanted to share stuff. They were kinder in general because it wasn't "everyone" there. 4chan started as satirical form of forum. Now it's less satire because of normal people who got there. Fediverse feels kinder and has etiquette of it's own... again... because it has attracted mostly the enthusiasts again. When it becomes everyones', we will likely see erosion of that.

@AnnCatsanndraКүн бұрын
@@MrGamelover23 That's almost exactly what they mean when they write "Free Speech" in the context of a private platform, even if they might not see it that way. The kind of users that are frustrated that they can't say something offensive or hostile without having immediate social repercussions is the kind of person that inhabits that sort of platform, and naturally that appeals to the kinds of groups you just mentioned. Very often people who are actively concerned about having the capacity to say what they wish are more likely to be upset about The Algorithm which will mysteriously and inexplicably hide something that was posted than they are about anyone or any platform that has clear and explicit rules about what they do and do not allow on their platform. I have a moderate amount of sympathy because right now AI and Machine Learning are extremely polarizing and a bannable offensive in some chats, which hurts as that was a subject I was fascinated with in my college years so it's interesting to see it come into the limelight now. Buuuut the obvious purpose of those rules is to prevent conflicts and hostility, and there _are_ websites like Civitai with attached social platforms that specifically cater to that crowd. So it's like if someone needs a dedicated smoke-break area in a restaurant, it's there. But lighting up in the no-smoking area and expecting not to get rejected for it is silly. And making loud, open violent threats anywhere in the restaurant is gonna get someone booted out, no matter what "way" the restaurant leans.

Yep. TLDR, "Just because it's decentralized doesn't mean it's not immune to hackers." Some general advice concerning your question: If an attacker gains access to a single Fediverse account that is linked to multiple services or instances, they could exploit it in several ways: Unauthorized Access: The attacker could access all linked instances, compromising each one. They could read private messages, post on your behalf, and interact with other users, potentially damaging your reputation. Data Harvesting: They could collect personal information from each instance, such as email addresses, messages, and other sensitive data, which could be used for further attacks or sold on the black market. Spread Misinformation: By posting misleading or harmful content across multiple instances, the attacker could spread misinformation quickly, leveraging the interconnected nature of the Fediverse. Social Engineering: Using the compromised account, the attacker could attempt to trick your contacts into providing additional information or access, thereby broadening the scope of their attack. Disruptive Activities: They could engage in activities that violate the rules of the instances, potentially getting your account banned and disrupting your online presence. Credential Harvesting: If the same or similar passwords are used across different services, the attacker might use the compromised credentials to access other non-Fediverse accounts, leading to broader security issues. To mitigate these risks, it's important to: Use strong, unique passwords for each instance. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible. Regularly monitor your account activity for any suspicious behavior.

Invisible blocks between servers run by network nannies make normal interaction frequently intolerable. Countless people join a server then try to talk to someone on another server, and find out that their admin or the admin of the other server invisibly cut off communication. Or they participated in a distributed blocklist that blocked your server for wrong or nonsensical reasons, with no way to fix it other than move. There is nothing wrong with moderation (the Fediverse needs it because it is not a community, it is a collection of communities, with different rules) but it should be transparent and not rely on a cabal of people that weaponize it for social clout.

What's worse is that some are even starting to do "allowlisting".. so by default they don't federate, and instead they exclusively select who they wanna federate with. This is the case with many lemmy instances. The problem is that by design Activitypub requires each instance to host the content from other instances in order for their users to be able to access it. And this is a lot of pressure on the instances since many don't want to host/promote content that they don't agree with or that can potentially be illegal. There should be a way (as an optional fallback) to allow the user to directly request to the remote instance without having to force the home instance to act as a proxy/mirror. What's the point of federating if you end up forced to have multiple accounts for different parts of the "fediverse"?
