My dad would slowly start writing "HOMEWORK" on the board and if the class wasn't totally silent by the time he got done writing it the whole class would get homework. That way the anger is deflected off the teacher and onto the kids who wouldn't shut up by the end of the last letter 👍

I just did my first week and this last day this Friday was so exhausting for one class- I have one student who acts up for attention and riles up the rest of the class- I feel like it’s already too late to change anything even though it’s just been three days

I’ve followed most of this video except for calling the student out by name and being a little snarky in return. I had to pull the entire class out into the hallway and I feel that it was a bad move but that one student made a good percentage get off task and rowdy. I really want to move onto content but I’m afraid that if I do and don’t address my expectations again it’s just going to keep happening- is there something else I should be doing?

Why do US kids only write with pencil? It doesn't make sense. Handwriting is less clear by using a pencil and you get all the annoyance and noise of people erasing and sharpening pencils. Just use pens like the rest of us.

"Sit where ever you want, because students are more motivated when they have more autonomy". No. No. No. That is not the case. I hate how people keep misquoting Ryan and Deci. Autonomy is not being able to make your own decisions. As Ryan has clarified numerous times: "Autonomy? To me it means a student's willingness, the will, to work for school. It is bad for their development and for their educational performance to force students to be independent. Too much indulgence in a classroom is also harmful. Giving autonomy does not mean that you just let students do whatever they want. The best teacher supports autonomy and offers structure."

I thought id hate tje move from 6th to 8th, and at first i did BUT man, i gotta say, its so freaking nice to have kids that are more independent, easier to level with, and capable of so many things that 6th graders need their hands held through...its grown on me...they understand sarcastic and situational humor and can read between the lines...i also agree i laugh LEGITIMATELY at some of their stories and jokes just like with an adult, 6th geaders I laugh more at their innocence and cuteness

You say avoid using names, but I use names in a positive way, not to call out bad behaviour but to thank the students who ARE paying attention. I’ve found that when I ask for silence, there’s always 3-5 students who do pay attention right at the start, so I thank them by name: “Thank you (student name) for paying attention/being silent. I appreciate your Co-operation etc.” The chatty ones slowly start to stop and wonder why I’m not speaking to them as I thank more silent students by name. I then thank table groups, or say “Thank you students in the back row/by the window, we are now just waiting on the others to stop talking.” I remain calm, pleasant expression and be genuine in my gratitude for their attention. It takes a a while to establish with new, rowdy classes (I’ve been a supply teacher for years!), but my classes do appreciate my calm and patient approach and they like that I thank them for giving me their attention. They quickly pick up on patronising tone, so you have to be genuine😂 Remaining calm is also great for my own health.

We invest so much time on ignorant kids from ignorant parents. Liberals talk about social programs in white European countries, but notice they never want to follow their education model. If we did, a lot of Black kids would be steered to a vocational skill. All the past studies are being debunked, like the "marshmallow test" despite it being the same kids and same demographics misbehaving and performing below standard. Graduation rates are manipulated. American kids and adults are fatter, dumber, and more mental.

I am a sub at a K-8 charter school. The kids are very trained. I have 4 son's and worked EC, so I am successful with the kids with shenanigans. I give them eye contact, reinforce good behavior... What do I do with the teacher's pets? They want to put kid's names on the board, tell me how to teach, what the teacher does, actually rearrange their desk, go into prize boxes... I tell them it is not my desk or theirs and we will respect it, ask them to take a seat, I am considering writing their name on the board?

Sometimes students want to have a negative engagement with the teachers in front of their peers because that gives them a sense of validation. I pull them out into the hallway, away from the students and say what I need to say to them. That does a few different things: 1) It takes them out of that environment which they seek validation and attention. 2) It takes them out of their comfort zone and now they are being held accountable for their actions as an adult would. 3) It gives me a chance to establish rapport with them and they understand that I’m not going to humiliate them in front of their peers. This is a technique that I developed over the past few years of being a teacher.

Being able to prioritize topics in a subject, presenting them in a logical sequence, knowing how much detail to cover, and setting the pace of the course can all be challenging when teaching a subject for the first time. Students can smell a phony, so you had better budget time for preparation.

what happens if the students don't notice the teacher coming into the classroom? They were very busy talking friends, playing rock paper scissors, and they had their own work.some one writes the other subjects notes

I was proctoring the state test for 8th grade math. All of my students finished, and we had about 20 minutes left. One of them asked to watch Bluey, and then all of a sudden, most of them were asking for this cartoon. We finished the class period watching Bluey. Lol love middle school.

Yes absolutely....am facing the same situation..I just started a week ago.....well I was quite in the beginning while they talking.....it doesn't fetch any results.....they think that they can just continue talking since I am silent when they talking.....they are least attentive and behave as if I don't exist in the classroom at all...😂 .... Now changed the pattern by raising my voice a bit and trying to calm them down....yes it eventually changing the situation.....not completely but yes to certain extent....it's an impossible task every day... I just spend atleast 5-10 mins on setting up things which has become routine everyday now.... But hopefully it will change down the line....as a stubborn teacher I don't want to give up..... I will stick to the pattern until I get the control over that noisy classroom. 😮

I know this is an older post but I'll chime in anyway. The attention signal has been the hardest thing for me. It worked for the first few weeks of school. I tried using a reverberating chime but the kids were all like "ow.. that hurts my ears" so I switched to an apple that I shook like a maraca. I also just froze and stopped talking when the kids were trying to talk over me. It was usually just a few attention seeking kids that stirred up the whole class. Eventually I stopped waiting for them to quiet themselves and just tried to talk louder. Incorporating collaborative practices where the kids talked to each other was tough because I had a hard time regaining their attention. In the past, I have had laryngitis from trying to be heard over my middle schoolers! I even got a microphone because I got feedback that my voice wasn't loud enough. Changing up seating to boy/girl only at tables was actually pretty helpful with curtailing conversation but I probably caused a lot of anxiety that was unintended. Then I found myself being the "seat nazi" - constantly barking at students who weren't sitting in their assigned seats because they preferred sitting with a friend. Trying to squelch conversation and control the room is the toughest part of teaching!

I am an interventionist and only have my students for 30 minutes. I am going to school to get my degree to become a classroom teacher. I have a difficult time with classroom management, any tips since I have my students for such a short period. sometimes I feel that they us the intervention time as a down time. They seem to want to mess around and just chat and tell jokes. I get the "this is boring" from a lot of them. I try to make the lessons engaging but sometimes feel all I do is repeat myself and try to keep them under control. Thank you, Shannon

17 years ago I started driving a school bus. I started going by Mr Rick because my last name is complicated and just to make it easier on everyone that’s what I chose. As I got into subbing and then as a para everyone already knew me as Mr Rick, even the Administration. This year I will begin teaching grade six science at a different district and I will follow the norm of the school. If it’s mixed, I will go by Mr Rick.

I like this one that a friend of mine does with her fourth grade class and it seems to work well., Say in a normal talking voice, “If you can hear my voice clap once” the closest students will clap once. Next in the same talking voice, “If you can hear my voice clap twice” now more students are aware from the first round and they clap twice. By the time you say, “…clap three times” the entire class is onboard.
