I would like to know how to handle middle or intermediate children in an all day detention. Some are the for several reasons fighting or absenteeism etc…

Often, when I take a student out of the class, I change the subject. Rather than trying to address an issue, which may not even truly exist, I ask them things about life in general or things that they consider their expertise. For example, I had kids in a special needs class who were "gangsters". Most of them didn't want to be considered that but they pretty much had to fit in in their neighborhood so...I would start hallway conversations with things like, "Did you ever notice that...?" I knew that most of the kids were considered "stupid" by most of the folks with whom they interacted throughout their day. I recognized that by simply asking their opinion on something, most of the kids would calm down immediately. I would sometimes ask them about behavior issues in the classroom. I would say, "I hope we have a better rest of the day." or something to that effect at some point, just to let them know that I recognized that we were spending our time together and that was a best way to get through it productively was to do our best to get along. Many years ago, when I was teaching in South Korea, a really excellent teacher told me that, "It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you do it together." It wasn't anything groundbreaking but it reminded me why I had success in a previous, very different teaching environment. By expressing genuine interest in another, we can usually find a common ground. Most people appreciate an environment where respect is the number one priority.

Hi Thom, I tonight gave myself the GIFT of watching your Top 10 Tips. I only found your channel today; as a veteran 23 year middle school teacher! 'Late bloomer' ha ha. So, YES if not too late (since you made this 5 years later) can you send me the Tip #10 'Hall Refocus Form'? Thank you. Kimberley

Thank you for sharing Thom. YES agreed to ALL 5 points that you made ~ I've been middle school classroom 23 years and STILL making those mistakes, too. This year is like the worst year ever ... so then I beat myself up ... how ? Why? Am I still like this after all of these years? I'm happy to find your blog and it's fresh to see your perspectives and hear you verbalize these things. THANK YOU.

Hi Thom, How have you been? It’s been such a long time since we last shared thoughts. I hope everything is going well with your little one. I’m reaching out with a small problem and would deeply appreciate your advice if you have any suggestions. As part of my research on the use of technology in schools, I’ve recently started conducting field visits. My focus is to compare online and face-to-face classrooms, exploring their similarities and differences, as well as understanding the reasons for integrating technology into teaching practices. I’ve already interviewed a few teachers and learned a lot from their experiences about the current state of technology use in classrooms. However, since schools have transitioned back to face-to-face learning, many teachers have raised a common concern during our conversations. They’re struggling to manage primary school children during recess and 10-minute breaks - specifically with the issues of running, pushing, and shouting. Is there any effective solution or strategy to address this challenge? Your insights would mean a lot. I posted this message here because your last email wasn't working. Best Regards

This tends to work best for me with elementary school students, but when it comes to middle schoolers, they do NOT stop talking and being super rowdy. I truly think it's because I look like a teenager and have a soft voice even when trying to be firm.

I have recently returned to substitute teaching after being out of the classroom for 33 years . First few days were a bit rough, so I searched for middle school classrooms mgt. I was amazed at how responsive and successful the tactics had been!! Thank you for putting up your videos.

I'm a brand new teacher, this is my first year. I teach 7th and 8th grade in one class, luckily I only have 8 kids. I have one student who is a bully, disrespectful, unmotivated to learn and he's been causing problems. I want to find ways to manage my room that helps my students and makes it harder for him to do all the things he's been doing.

Loved it ...but unfortunately I have that one student who no matter what I do he never changes his attitude...I've tried to address his behaviour privately or to just talk to him or to give him a heads up during the class moreover one of the head teachers came and yelled at him and we said that we are going to expel him ..but nothing worked ..and also I tried to stop paying attention to his behaviour or to joke about it but still nothing worked and I'm still thinking of ways to help him knowing that his parents don't care about his attitude in school

As a relatively new and unqualified teacher, I have to say the first two videos you have posted here are excellent examples of classroom management. I am VERY happy to have discovered your youTube Channel. I have subscribed to your channel as well as downloaded the HALL REFOCUS FORM which i will use. I MAY have to tweak it, given the ''naughtiness'' of my students, but its just about perfect in its purpose. Thank you for this. I hope i can share this knowledge with others

I moved from 8th grade to 6th grade recently and man these are so true, especially the humor part. 8th graders have made me cry laughing. My 6th graders' humor is basically just doing a sound or meme soundbyte over and over lol
