We hired Yoana Todorova for a one-hour video training session on cultural sensitivity in translation and interpreting. After some negotiation, we accepted her request for a higher rate-62.5% above our original offer-and extended the project to 10 hours, which was the highest rate of all trainers on the project. Despite this, we worked with our client to meet her terms and confirmed the project on September 25 with a deadline of October 30. However, just two days later, our company, a small family business based in Asheville, North Carolina, was severely impacted by Hurricane Helene, which caused catastrophic damage to our community and unprecedented flooding since 1916 in this area. With power, water, and internet access disrupted, businesses, including ours, were forced to temporarily close as we focused on recovery efforts. At least 200 people passed away and we are still working on finding missing loved ones today. A quick Internet search suffices to know that this is a real situation. On October 9, 21 days before the deadline, our client asked us to put the project on hold, as they had redirected their resources to emergency relief. We informed Ms. Todorova of this development and offered to compensate her for half of the project immediately, with the remainder to be paid once the project resumed. By this point, she had submitted draft slides for review. What followed was completely unexpected. Ms. Todorova immediately responded claiming she had already worked “over 60 hours” on the project -despite the fact that only 88 business hours had passed since confirmation- and stated she had searched how much she should charge for a 1-hour personalized training and online statistics “suggest $5,000 and more.” She also stated she had agreed to do a job for “1/10 of its value”, that we were “trying to get advantage” of her, that she couldn’t “afford to be half paid” and that if we refused to pay she was going to be “obligated to go to court”. While we were drafting a reply saying that we valued her work, that we fully intended to honor our agreement, and that our goal was to resolve this matter amicably by coming out of pocket to cover her full rate, she had already sent another email, which I will paste below (word by word): “I will publish this training on KZbin for free, as this is my creation, and I Don't have any guarantee that you didn't just copy my job and know you come up with this story. I will publish the entire training for free, and I will share your email of projects on hold. The truth is that you maybe copied my slides this morning, maybe took pictures of it, and maybe you are trying to get out of the agreement without paying me. I will leave your company slides so everyone will know what you do. I believe that this is fare response to your behavior. Obviously I don't want to fight for money. Obviously you should respect the contract. But it's also obvious that human greediness and dishonesty has no limits.” We calmly reminded Ms. Todorova that she had signed an NDA and that all materials featuring our company’s logo were our intellectual property. We assured her that we would honor the original agreement, and within the hour, we paid her invoice in full. We never refused to pay her, yet her approach was combative and unnecessarily escalated. The past days we have been struggling with loss of power, water and Internet services (services that have not been fully restored as of today), and even the FEMA disaster assistance funds we will receive will probably not cover the full rate we had to pay her for a service we did not receive from her. While we understand her concerns about potentially not receiving a full payment, her insensitive approach and lack of flexibility, along with the aggressiveness and unprofessionalism she handled herself with during this delicate situation did not go unnoticed. She displayed no empathy or willingness to accommodate any delays caused by this force majeure event. Her insistence on immediate full payment, alongside her refusal to entertain a fair and reasonable compromise, was particularly disheartening. Instead of collaborating with us to find a solution, she chose to threaten legal action and make baseless accusations of dishonesty. These actions were not only disproportionate but demonstrated a troubling lack of professionalism and basic decency during a time of crisis. Furthermore, her threats to publish our proprietary training materials online, in direct violation of the non-disclosure agreement she had signed, raised serious concerns about her ethics and respect for contractual obligations. I must express how deeply appalled I am by Ms. Todorova’s actions and I find it disheartening to witness such disregard for the trust, respect, and integrity that our profession relies on. I do not recommend working with this vendor. Her conduct not only demonstrated an alarming lack of professionalism and empathy during a time of crisis, but it also directly contradicts the ethical standards outlined by the American Translators Association (ATA). Given our experience, we cannot recommend working with Ms. Todorova. Her lack of sensitivity, professionalism, and unwillingness to navigate an unforeseen crisis in a collaborative manner were alarming. In a field where trust, communication, and mutual respect are essential, Ms. Todorova’s conduct fell far short of what we expect from a professional. Proceed with caution if you are considering her services.

Hi Yoana !! I saw that a company will do a Mock Oral Interpreting session to see whether they can hire me.. what does that mean? Will someone be actively watching me interpret live or will they send out like an online exam for me to take and from there, I can record myself and send over how I interpreted? I have only been contracted by two (so its been awhile aha) and if I remember correctly they sent out a link for me to take the oral exam and I just recorded my interpretation from the source language to the target language, etc. Whats been your experience when they interview you? I am excited to get a 2nd interpreting job:))
