Nice work again, Jay. I like your take on photography. Who knows what is going to happen in the US, but I'm glad that it is being documented by people committed to the idea of recording and showing this event. Even though I am based in the UK, the implications of your choices out there will no doubt be considerable.

This was really great, Jay. And I'd forgotten about your Shabazz interview. Imagine just having >that< in your back pocket to throw back into this video. Nicely produced and great question. PLUS, now I think I should swing by the election to take a look-see. Impressive work. Also, holy cats, that's a LOT of Leica gear.

This video was deep Jay. I feel as a photographer and storyteller for some of us it is a calling to be a witness. A witness to history. A witness to document. A witness to the under-represented or oppressed. We tell their story. We share experience. And there is an element of art to it as well. Great video Jay, respect bro.

@stevegodsell, first thank you for watching and adding your comment. You make a great point, carry them both if that's what you are into. For me personally, I want to carry less. In doing so, my mind can focus on important things and avoid decision fatigue. In the end - My hope is to manage accomplish more with less. P.s. I tend to go left when most walk right. Do what you feel and never follow. Have a great day.

Nice explanation, great video thanks. But I always have a confusion that if I want more depth of field then I have to go on higher F stops like 8 or 16 but at the same time i don’t want that much of light to come in. What should I do in that case of harsh sunny day. Manually increase my shutter speed to 1/8000 or something. Please clear my doubt sir. Thanks in advance.
@jayespinalАй бұрын
@hershnama5168 Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. In your case I would use aperture priority and let the shutter speed do what it needs to do. With my M11 I set it to auto ISO with limits set so it does not go past a certain ISO. Another thing you could do is buy an ND filer for your lenses. But the first option usually works best.

This video and line of thinking really resonated for me. I made a similar decision recently and frankly worried that the “this is really, really going to be my last camera purchase ever, I swear to god”, argument was just the latest and most sophisticated form of GAS justification yet. But… time has thankfully shown otherwise. Buy once, cry once. Yup.

Great video Jay. When I became serious about photography I got my self a 24mm, a 50mm and an 85mm. Never got on with the 50mm so years later I replaced it with the 35mm. Three lenses, all the basis covered. Cheers Ray.
@jayespinalАй бұрын
Hey Ray thanks for sharing! I'm doing a whole year with the 28mm now, lets see how that goes...
@RayLombardiАй бұрын
Hey Jay, somehow, I knew you'd choose the 35mm. It is an amazing focal length. I got a 50mm when starting photography back in 1995. It was what everyone advised. I never got on with it, ever. I wanted something more wide angle. At the time, a 24mm made more sense to me, and so, I went and got one. Never looked back! Today, nearly 3 decades on, 35mm is my go to focal length. For the Leica ecosystem, I'd go with a 21mm, a 35mm and a 75mm. Sell the 50mm and get one of those! Cheers, Ray.
@jayespinalАй бұрын
You know what I have not used the 50mm since I got the 35mm. Thanks for the continued support of watching and adding your comments.

Hi Jay, you are so on point! I get that when starting and not knowing whether one will stick with it, one should proceed with caution when purchasing gear. For seasoned photographers though, it is exactly as you say it. We may think the dream set up is too expensive, and off we go, substituting, finding alternatives that will never fulfil us completely. In the end, saving nothing. Patience, restraint, focus and a clear goal will get us to were we dream to go. Thank you for your video.

Excellent video. NOT shooting homeless people is IMO wrong cause they are part of society and street life as any other person. When you avoid shooting them it is IMO a form of discrimination, like avoid shooting disabled people of people with a different color. We are all part of society and street life. The only problem I have is when you make a lot of money out of the shots without sharing. I shoot so in the future I can look back to things that made that particular day a great day !
@jayespinal2 ай бұрын

Acually the fact that everybody owns a camera makes it even more apparent that one needs to be conscient about the connection between one's eye and the camera and action on subconscious triggers. It's impressive how many shoot analog. I use digital but old material.

Everyone owns a camera. But few can make a great image. Sharp, well exposed and recognizable is expected. An image that SAYS something or TOUCHES the viewer with impact... few have mastered the craft so they don't rely on blind luck, ie the blind squirrel finding an occasional acorn.

Killer content as always Jay but this one hit home, real good stuff here. I’m Brooklyn born but grew up in NNJ. Recently work has gotten me back to Carol Gardens area of Brooklyn often so your work hits close to home. Love the answers the photographers all gave, funny but seems to be a theme. All seems to mention something about the connection to other people, the community, life, their backgrounds, etc, and how they seem to use that to interact with those around them. Fascinating video. Myself, I am very outgoing and talkative and although my main income is from being a financial services professional, my passion is walking the streets of Montclair NJ and interacting with the public through my camera. Mostly Leica M10M with 50 / F2.0 APO M. Love that combo and it brings me peace and clarity to my life. Great job Jay, fantastic share…. Bravo…. 📷🖤📷

The poverty porn question is often on my mind and I’ve defo passed on shots because there wasn’t more to the story than the subjects circumstance. On the other hand, I’ve had people thank me for photographing them because they feel seen, and I’ve become more flexible because of that. I took a photo in San Francisco of a homeless woman combing another’s hair, my intent made me ok with that shot.
