Was this supposed to make me want to support sheep farmers? Because it had the opposite effect. Those sheep are uncomfortable at best, and are probably scared to be pinned down like that as prey animals. Im sure they get used to it, and it is true that they need to be sheared, but that is only because humans have hijacked their genes to make unhealthy amounts of wool. Wild sheep don't need to be sheared. Not to mention the mutilation of sheep such as tail docking, castration, and mulesing, done without anesthesia. And the fact that the sheep and many lambs are slaughtered for meat. Wool farming is cruel
@drywall18733 жыл бұрын
Wool farming is cruel, because lambs are killed for meat, and wild sheep dont need to be sheared? Those have nothing to do with each other, you even admit that sheep need to he sheared. Not shearing a sheep results in a number of problems, from parasites, infections, to good old fashion heat stroke. Its cruel to not shear a sheep

Thank you Chantel Renae. The shearers were so professional, the sheep so cleanly shorn. Those who have questions should respectfully ask. I am sure there are those who can answer. This is how it is really done in Australian woolsheds. I know because I have worked in one. Only difference, I have never needed a dog to help me pen the sheep. The dogs are very helpful in the wide open spaces though. Do not believe the hateful PETA videos where that organisation deliberately hires actors to harm sheep. They should be prosecuted.

Please read the comments above, Aurek, about why sheep are kept in small pens while being sheared. In fact we round up the sheep fairly regularly to check on them and care for them. It may be stressful for a while, but believe me when there is bad weather coming in, the sheep are glad to be huddled together like this. I understand that it is difficult for you to know all the ins and outs of a profession alien to you, so keep asking questions. Keep maintaining your respectful voice; it is appreciated.

Wow okay so apparently everyone missed the blatant cruelty in this video because of some dubstep. They have spots around their butt where they were probably cut the skin off without anesthetic for "sanitary purposes" those sheep should not be kept in such a confined space. They're thrown around like rag dolls and the sheep look terrified. Go to a sanctuary that rescues these babies. You'll see them free-roaming, lots of love and only a sheered once a year because they have been bred to produce much wool for us. Just use something else already. It's 2019.
@dreaming-of-spots68054 жыл бұрын
They’re actually not being hurt at all! Those spots are probably old scabs or ticks that were pulled off by the clippers (unless you’re talking about the fleeceless area, in which case, no, that’s just how sheep are, they don’t grow wool there in most breeds)- if they get anything larger than a small scrape (which doesn’t happen often) it’s treated with antiseptic before the sheep’s let back out. They also naturally produce lanolin, which is excellent at soothing small scrapes and nicks. They’re also not terrified, with the exception of a few young ones (who will learn pretty quickly that shearing’s not that bad). I know it might look like they’re being handled roughly, but it’s not hurting them at all and these are extremely experienced shearers who know how to handle the sheep quickly and efficiently without harming them. Putting a sheep on it’s back is not harmful to it in the slightest, it just makes it so they don’t move as much, which means easier, faster shearing and a much lower risk of injury to both animal and human. They’re also usually out on pasture, not cooped up in a building- you just have to bring them in for shearing in order to get through 100-200 sheep in a day! (and even sheep in a large scale operation only get sheared 1-2x a year- that’s how long it takes them to grow a full fleece)
@fordyangisfordyangis23264 жыл бұрын
Erin, I think it would be better to watch the video again with an open mind. Also read Ryan's reply above. He has explained it so well. I know for a fact that all minor nicks on the sheep are treated with antiseptic just before they are released into the wider paddock. I know this because I used to do it myself. A shearer who consistently cuts a sheep badly will not be able to hold his job.

Celia Clarke bad or cruel shearers are few and far between, much much less than PETA wants you to believe- this video is how a solid 99% of farms are run at shearing time (if they’re not using the traditional method with hand shears, which just takes a bit longer). PETA is in it for the money, not to spread accurate information, they’re a for-profit org.

@@xxdark__foxx199 No it doesn't hurt them. It's actually necessary because sheep don't shed themselves unless they are one of the few self shedding breeds. If they aren't shorn their wool will continue to grow longer, blind them and make moving difficult. Around here, anyone caught shearing sheep like they do in this video would be fired immediately and never work on a sheep farm in the area again because their previous boss would ensure word of their abuse got around to all other sheep farms in the area. If they ever want to work on a sheep farm again, thet would have to outrun their reputation which is no simple task, for word travels far. They would be effectively blacklisted. Look up 'Shrek the sheep nz' and you'll see what happens when a sheep avoids shearing for years.

Idk, I think sheep have a pretty cushy life- trade a fleece or two a year for food, water, vet care, and protection from predators? Yes please. Wild animals live short, cruel lives that often end in prolonged, painful death.
@fordyangisfordyangis23264 жыл бұрын
What is a normal sheep? Normal is a difficult word. Same as we can't say that a certain person is normal, nor can we say that a sheep is normal. We have to keep up with the times and understand that some sheep are bred for their wool and they have a very comfortable life. Small price to pay; get a haircut once a year. Perhaps you might like to edit what you have written because it makes no sense. You have used a triple negative, tied yourself up into knots and have expressed the opposite of what you mean. I think! If you were in my writing class, I would urge you to rewrite that contribution. I hope that humans will not just let all the animals try to survive without any support/input. There would be no more animals!! Humans must take responsibility for the welfare of animals. I am equally exasperated by dog owners. You don't have a dog do you?

Good on them though for being concerned about the comfort of the sheep. In reality, shearing is one of the most difficult jobs in agriculture and I admire people who work in sheds. Give the sheep a bit more credit, people. Sheep are hardy, weathered animals and can survive horrendous conditions outside with no fucks given.
