WHAT A BLAST FROM THE PAST! I don't mean when they used to play this medley, I mean that I wish I could go back to when my ears weren't bleeding.

C'mon! really? this is a trick for a grade 4 to pull, but for 78ths of Bill Livingstone??? what's next? "Scots wa hae" as a march? Why not do a march of Andy Rennick's Ferret, then strathspey into Camarionian Rant and jig into Price of a Pig?? Or am I just too old to dream of such things?? If you thought this performance was good, then you best kneel to the King of England. Bill Livingstone needs to come back and inject his creativity to 78ths again. I apologize. The 78th now isn't what the 78th was like when I listened to them.

Paddy Donovan was my grandfather...my family came across a wonderful song written about him by Bobby Watts...I remember my father Joe being delighted we had stumbled across it. Bobby Watt told me he had met Alex Duthart on a bus in Glasgow going to some competition and Alex told him of the high regard he had for Paddy. I hope it is ok for me to post the link for the song here...if not please delete...kind regards...Anthony Donovan. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIC8nWufidR1g8Usi=t6v24Yz42ezwRB_x

Do you have the MSR side digitized? Someone uploaded an indirect recording (HATE indirect recordings!!!!!!) of the MSR side played on their Victrola but I'd like the direct version please. I'm more a fan of direct recordings of 78's rather than Victrola-based recordings with room echos, warpy vibratos, etc.

Thanks for posting. I know only one piobaireachd, McIntosh's Banner, that I learned it from John MacFadyen who used to come to teach a weeklong piobaireacht summer camp at Trudy Campbell's farm near Wallaceburg, Ontario. It was a great adventure and an opportunity to learn piobaireacht from a master, one-on-one. Early in the week after lessons, the great MacFadyen handed his pipes to me, saying "go down that dirt road and give them a good, long blow". I headed a long way down the farm's dirt road to get out of sight and sound, bursting with youthful pride that I had been chosen for such an honor. Panic replaced pride as I struck up the pipes. The master's pipes which were excruciatingly hard to blow. I daren't touch the reed so I checked the bag for leaks. With nothing obviously "wrong", it simply took everything in me to play, but I wasn't going to complain or let anyone know of this condition which continued over days. As I handed his pipes back on the final day, he popped out the chanter, removed the reed and popped it into a small tin box with a HUGE grin. He said "good lad" and inserted a more vintage looking reed into the chanter and proceeded to play for the students with apparent ease. The following week, he gave a recital in Detroit's St. Andrew's Hall which is one of the greatest piping performances I have ever heard. I like to believe that on that night, he performed using the "Reed of Wrath" I had played in for him the week before. He was a great teacher and piper imprinting a deeper understanding of piobaireachd and piping which I will never forget.

As a classical violinist I'm always amazed how the pipe bands play such rhythmically intricate music without a conductor only the pipe major tapping his foot obscured much of the time to the pipers and drummers alike. I doff my hat to them all !!!

21st century pipe bands have been effeminized. Strathclyde Police 1960s-1990s was amazing stirring as was Dysart, Shotts Edinburgh Police. 21st century pipe bands arent worth listening to or watching. They do notinspire. Pipe bands have lost their strong male, military bearing character. There should be a male only bands category, female only category, and mixed category(to satisfy the PC Wokesters). Modern pipe bands are way too wimpy now. Deep down you know it's true.

Take your comments elsewhere. A medley this fantastic doesn’t deserve to be tarnished by your ill-informed opinions.

100% honest here, the tune selection is cracked out. I like Michael quite alot but it seems like he was hitting the pipe when writing this medley. Regardless, I hope the band does well at worlds.

No. When the band was formed they wore these hats (and they're just hats). Bill Livingstone always thought they gave a "minstrel vibe" to the band and that suited. That said, there is nothing "minstrel" about the great soldiers and pipers and piper-soldiers who wear - and have worn - this style of hat.

"Live in Ireland" was the first "real" pipe band album I obtained after I started learning the pipes. That was way before youtube and the plethora of easy access to recordings, so I listened to that album hundreds of times and it made quite the impression on me. This medley, along with the rest of the album is permanently seared into my mind in a good way. I'm sure I'm not alone. What a treat to hear a medley from that era brought back in its entirety.

"Mason's" is a fun tune, "Cascade" is an intense/compelling tune, but man if those tunes in between aren't melancholy-inducing. There's something kind of bittersweet or even heart-wrenching about them. It's hard to describe. "Sad" is not the right word but definitely evocative of a kind of reflective mood. Thank you for playing this medley! Great sound, too.

I couldn't believe that old medley had returned with an updated version. Happy 40th anniversary to the Mason's Apron Medley. I also loved how slow airs (Mist Covered Mountains and Behind The Hills) combind together since the Megantic Outlaw concert from Saint John, New Brunswick from 1992.
