He was a character designed to poke fun at consumerism and soulless corporate culture, a counter-culture icon delivering satirical takes on world news, yet at the same time was used to shamelessly market products and networks while letting you know exactly what he was doing. The irony reaches a peak with this video: The Coca Cola corporation conducted this taste test event to prove to themselves that people preferred "New Coke" to Pepsi. Except, when you conduct a taste taste, giving free samples, naturally most people are going to pick the name that's written on the side of the van giving them free stuff. This artificial feedback let Coke turn a blind eye to their own product, and as a result, New Coke was an utter disaster and (temporarily) led to a loss of market share vs Pepsi. Of course, they managed to turn it around: the "free advertising" granted by the entire debacle let them reposition themselves to heavily market "Classic Coke", and recover more than they had lost. The 80s Cola wars truly were a trip.

OMG! Thank you for this! I was a HUGE Max Headroom fan as a kid and I had recorded this episode on tape. I had about every line memorized and still use some of Max’s quips from this episode in my own show to this day!
