Do you plant the whole pod or break the pods and plant the tiny seeds within?
@splendidgarden7b4 күн бұрын
Each pod will have tons of seeds. I took out the seeds and let them dry, then planted the seeds in starter pots the next February

They lived last summer but ALL of my dianthus were killed in a late freeze this past spring, even the ones I’d had for years. In addition many of our crepe Myrtle trees were killed back buck luckily they all put out new growth.

I’m considering different Magnolias for some privacy and visual interest… Do you have deer in your area/yard? I’m looking for evergreens or beautiful ornamental flowering trees that are deer proof or extremely deer resistant…
@splendidgarden7b5 ай бұрын
Yes we have deer but so far have not bothered the Little Gem. Arborvitae haven’t been bothered yet and supposedly deer resistant but I’ve seen where gardeners in the northeast say deer do eat arborvitae. It may be they’ve left us alone because they have so much more to eat in our woods and other areas of the property. You might ask a nursery in your area about the green giant arborvitae to see how they do locally…they would give you privacy about as quick as any tree I know.

Did these survive the division?

They did! Unfortunately I think the super freeze got not only these but my other dianthus this past winter. They are usually hardy for us but not this year. But yes they performed well after dividing last summer

I have several that are inside grown in coconut seed starter and are the small single green leaf. I transplanted some not a mixture of seed starter soil with some soil. it is May and is in the 70's here in Wisconsin. When the sun is out I take the small containers out--I only transplanted one into each container. For a couple of weeks they have just been single leaves and don't seem to be growing any further---what do I from here? Should I try moving to full organic soil? Do I wait and try to be patient? It has rained a lot lately and strong winds so they are trying to grow in the garage with filtered outside light....what do I do now?
@splendidgarden7b6 ай бұрын
I would say be patient. Mine didn’t really do much until the second year. Many times when starting from seeds, you may not see blooms until the second or third year. Thanks for watching.

Does this Gem Magnolia shed the leaves asking for my husband 😅😅
@splendidgarden7b9 ай бұрын
Yes they do but since the Little Gem is supposed to be a smaller end product I hope not as bad. We had a regular magnolia at our last home and my husband really disliked it! I personally think the reward of the beauty of the tree is so worth it and I can’t wait until my Little Gem is big enough to use its branches for decorating. I used our last tree to make large door swags, wreaths, and fireplace swags during the holidays…they were so gorgeous and looked like I spent a bunch of money! Just tell your husband you’ll take care of the tree cleaning 😀! Thanks for watching.

Glad u made this video, this is a very real example of what even experts do in terms of splitting because they know that plants are very hardy and can take a lot of abuse if cared for rightly afterwards. I've done this many times to my plants, killed many in my beginner years, not because of the way I split them (exactly how u do it, and honestly sometimes I just rip it out completely because the original soil is like a brick), but because I didn't do any aftercare. Cutting off blooms, keeping them in the correct soil medium, keeping the soil watered, keeping them in full shade, no fertilizer until new growth was visible, only then did, all of them make it. Dare I say it the hard handing actually made the plant grow stronger roots because there wasn't much to begin with. Don't be afraid of killing your plants guys, they are much stronger then we give them credit for, and if they do die, it's because they were weak in the first place, or they didn't have the proper after care. Great video keep it up! Love from Malaysia ❤

Don't smash the jap beetles. The debate is that this will cause to release a pheromone that attracts more beetles to your area. Hang some traps far away from your garden. They are attracted to the trap and could bring more from surrounding areas to your garden if it's close by. The best thing is to tough it out. They come in fast and furious but don't last that long and everything should leaf back out. Good luck gardening! Enjoying your videos!

I have two of these trees. One I planted in my backyard and another one in a big planting pot in front of my home at the beginning of June of this year. They both are doing well. My trees are only 3ft tall and the tree in my backyard bloomed two flowers a couple of wks ago. I'm going to try the neem oil because I'm having the same problem with the beetles. Research neem oil and see if it's something you may like to use for your tree.
