Okay. I've been watching videos about SM650 since last few days. Watched more then 200 videos. Only 1 video among those, the vlogger said that the celestial varient has wider handlebar. Also another video the vlogger (different person) said that the handlebar is raised in celestial version. I'm not sure about it. Kindly inspect it and let me know if you find any difference. As I don't have a royal enfield showroom in my town.

Hi there. Just looking at your photos of the broken end of the shaft, as a Metallurgist, I can see that there a distinct signs of metal fatigue that's been happens for a while. Then the final break, where the metal was quite thin by the time you hit the large pothole. As I can't see them closely and live, or conduct any test, however, I suspect that there may have been a fault in the shaft and the metal fatigue propagated from there until it finally let go, maybe exasperated by the stay. I have a Super meteor and recently replaced the shocks with YSS performance shocks, which made a huge difference to the ride. Anyhow, I glad you are OK and the issue is sorted by RE. Ride well. Cheers
@autorevvv
@autorevvv Ай бұрын
Hello, very helpful insights there and quite possibly the reason why this happened. I've too checked out the YSS shocks for the SM and was planning to get them after my stock setup runs out for another 10k kms. Is the ride quality less bumpy now at the rear? and does it affect handling by any chance? I take my SM on a lot of twisties here in India and enjoy leaning it in corners as much as a cruiser can lean :-D and with stock suspensions it handles very well. Let me know what your experience has been w.r.t handling / mild cornering.

@autorevvv
@autorevvv Ай бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you found this useful. The exact reason is still unknown. Possible explanations are: 1) My Zana saddle stays were mounted on the suspensions (on the inside) with other 2 mounting points on fender and chassis. Moving and still parts wearing could have resulted in this. Fact that there are a few more people with Zana saddle stay have reported the same in the comments here could mean it's a specific ZANA issue. 2) The torque used to mount the saddle stay on the suspensions could have caused this. Tighter the mounting, more chances of it affecting the movement of the suspensions 3) Bolting the saddle stay on the inside of suspension joint (this is what the RE guys told me) caused this. Whereas bolting on the outside of the suspensions - how your Autoengina mounts will not have the same risk. But I've heard from other experts in my group that it doesn't matter if its mounted on the inside or outside So, my take away was - don't get a stay that mounts on the suspensions at all, why take the risk?! So i picked the LCB which mounts on the chassis and fender. You take a judgement call basis all the presented facts / opinions. Hope this helped.!

To sum up this topic for everone who is looking for a saddle stay and is now unsure: 1) it seems that the Zana saddle stay restricted the movement of the upper suspension (light grey cap) which led to unintended forces breaking the suspension rod. 2) if you have an other model check if it is as close to the shock as the Zana one - if not, everthing should be okay and this is probably the reason, that there are no incidents with other saddle stays mounted to this bolt. 3) generally, the mounting of saddle stays on the upper suspension bolt shouldn't be a problem if the bolt is mounted with the correct torque. The load forces of the saddle stay are rather small compared to the suspension operating forces. So there should be plenty of safety margin. The bolt and surface (frame) under the bolt head, are not moving parts, so the (moving) suspension shouldn't be affected by it. This mounting concept on the upper suspension bolt is also used by the original royal enfield saddle stay on the interceptor. You can look it up on their website for the interceptor accessories. So it should not be a no-go, to mount there something and therefore I decided to buy a saddle stay (not the Zana) which mounts to this bolt but with enough clearance to the suspension.
@autorevvv
@autorevvv 2 ай бұрын
This is a super summarization, thanks so much! I do see the level of torque on the mount as a potential reason for the suspension rod to break. Having said that, isn't it just safer to have a saddle stay that does NOT mount on the suspension at all?! There's options available that mount on the chassis hole (specifically designed to hold panniers) or the fender itself - two mounting points on either side. Thanks again! and do consider subbing! :-)
@gertk9633
@gertk9633 2 ай бұрын
@@autorevvv the bolt tightening torque and everything which is "clamped" by the bolt, does not introduce any torque on the suspension itself, because the suspension bolt hole has rotational freedom around the bolt. Same function as a ball bearing, which can not transfer torque. If this would not be the case, the suspension would always break even without saddle stay. When the swing arm moves up and down, the distance of the two suspension mounting points increases / decreases which compresses the suspension but always along the rod axis...all the forces which are not parallel to the axis of the suspension rod, only rotate the suspension around the mounting bolts but introduce no "bending load" on the suspension rod as you would need to hold it at least on one side against rotation to create a reaction load (newtons action and reaction law)...if you restrict this rotation (contact between saddle stay and upper suspension housing) you get the necessary reaction loads which cause a bending stress on the rod which it is not designed for. It has high strength against compressive or tensile loads but it is weak against bending loads. Like if you try to compress a pencil along the axis (not possible by hand) but bending it and breaking it is very easy. So bolt torque is only relevant for the bolt itself as long as the rotation of the suspension is not restricted. If the saddle stay introduces enough force that the bolt is damaged by shear stress, than it would be unsafe to mount there something...but the saddle stay loads are tiny compared to operational forces. (~few kg in the saddle bag compared to the max allowable load like rider, pillion and extra allowes luggage weight). I hope this explanation helps. But in the end you are still somehow right that if you leave this bolt alone, there will not be an issue there... I am just trying to say that when someone finds a cool saddle stay which mounts to this suspension bolt, it is wrong to say this is super unsafe and he/she should not buy it.... As long as it has not the same design flaw as the discusses one it should be okay - otherwise Royal enfield wouldn`t do it on the interceptor. Best Regards. :)
@gertk9633
@gertk9633 2 ай бұрын
And what I forgot to say is: do not tighten the bolt by hand without the right tool - if you overtorque it, you either damage the bolt or might "squeeze" the frame (it is a rather thin sheetmetal) into contact with the suspension, which again restricts the rotation and leads to the same issue as with the saddle stay. So be careful and check the mounting manual.

Hello from a fellow SM 650 rider from Pune, also from your video I reckoned that we have probably crossed path during the anniversary ride as I too had the reporting in point near BBC, Baner. Was sad to see the ordeal you faced and completely agree with the rear suspension issue that most of us SM650 users are facing. While the logic of static pannier mounted on moving suspension head seems probable but still in no way the snapping of suspension rod is acceptable. Are there no precedence of such mounts and if there are , are all of them breaking apart😮. RE should really think hard on their SM650 portfolio !!

Hey there oh yes we would have probably crossed paths that day!! So while uploading I thought I was the only one whose suspension broke. I found 2 other in the comment section who had a similar incident, both cases had Zana saddle stay mounted on shocks. While most saddle stays are mounted at the same spot, it seems it’s Zana’s stays that are causing this. But equally confused then why would others not break. Regardless, saddle stay or not, suspension snapping in two is very strange and I was lucky to not have been doing triple digit speeds at the time. Anyway, let’s catch up on a ride sometime!! The wound and the ointment is the same for us bikers 🥹😃

Opt for the old design and insist on stainless steel. Only issue I had was they first delivered a mild steel version which caught rust within weeks. I haven't had good experience with the service center guys or even the engineers for SM650 from RE. My SM keeps going left when I leave the handlebar while riding. They kept my bike for 3-4 days and finally said it was because of the aftermarket backrest I had installed, which is again, Zana. Even when I told them that it was like this from day 1. They sent my back after removing the backrest, with the problem still being there. So for any problem, their first reaction is to put it on the aftermarket accessory. So I doubt that led to your suspension issue as well.

I swear my Thunderbird had this same issue of steering misalignment. Never could get fixed by RE, eventually I learnt to live with it. Your Zana backrest causing steering issue is too much, I can;t imagine how backrest could affect that, They are clearly bullshitting. In my case, I do think maybe RE could be right because this saddle stay was bolted right on the suspensions...So yeah but I totally agree with you on RE pushing the blame on everything else most times. Ride safe buddy and go see one of those legendary "bullet" mechanics in your area. These guys are sometimes way better RE service guys.

@@autorevvv That's so right. And I'm lucky to have found a great RE meachnic recently, after having owned an RE for over 12 years now.
