you have two of the premier guitarists out there...Rik Emmett of Triumph and Alex Lifeson of Rush, how can you NOT be in awe of their talent ???

both of them are indirectly responsible for the Bryan Adams plague on the United States. Yet no apologies in this video.....

As someone who was actually there that day, both of these guys have killer chops. Very different styles but both absolute masters. I was in the prog rock seminar class with Rob Bulger that week at Appleby College in Oakville. The class had about 20 people in it and Rik and Alex were scheduled to visit our class on Tuesday of that week. Rik spent the morning with us doing some playing and talking about his career. Alex arrived around 2 in the afternoon and did the same. Rik stayed for the afternoon and sat in on Alex's session which was really cool. Both of them about 10 feet away. At the time Rush was 1/2 way through recording Snakes and Arrows and Alex gave us sneak peek by playing the song "Hope" of the album on his Garrison acoustic. This is a video taken later on in the evening with students from the entire program present in the audience This is a fantastic program. Also got to see Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan up close as well the two following years.

Each player has his own thing. Alex is a much more experimental and "unique" guitarist, I feel, but Rik has such impressive facility with a broad spectrum of guitar styles.

Big Rush fan but guitar fans know how great Rik Emmett was/is. Cue up Triumph's 1983 US Festival set. Rik's finest hour imo.

I will also say Alex Lifeson performs his magic in many different time signatures than Triumph ever attempted to try...but Rik is a better singer...hands down...lol

Alex Lifeson is waaay more creative and has a huge guitar identity compared to Rik Emmett, I like both players but Lifeson is an icon all to himself and totally unique(closer to Jeff Beck), Rik is great but stuck more to the rules...and everyone knows you have to break the rules to be on top and to live forever in the rock n roll world

Seriously. The thing that matters here is that these two equaly talented guitarist donated their time to a workshop for kids.

If anyone here actually thinks that Alex Lifeson is a better guitar player than Rik Emmett, you do not know the first thing about playing guitar. I love Rush, but there is simply no comparison. Rush have a much better rythm section (drums and bass), but Rik Emmett is far and away a more versatile and accomplished guitarist - in ANY style that they choose to play (blues, jazz, clasical, rock, etc.). It's just a fact, and one I'm sure that Alex Lifeson would agree upon.

And then there's Alex is way more creative. Much better writing skills. No comparison
