@@LittlebyLittleHomeschool Hello there! My oldest is 15, and I started officially teaching her to read at 5 - so 10 years. 😊 And you know what I mean by "officially..." I had taught her to memorize over 50 verses by the time she turned 4. I feel though, that I have winged it a lot, but a friend assured me that the way I was doing it, is better than pressuring them to be in the books. So I felt better because my oldest is 15, but my other three are much younger. Anyhow, this was bothering me this summer, and then I found your podcast. I have been so encouraged every time I listen to you! 🩷 I would still like to establish some solid routines though. I look forward to listening to your latest episode/s. This is why the US is the worst educated of all western countries and the most vulnerable to propaganda lol. Kids will never break free from indoctrination im their own home if they never see other ways of life.
@LittlebyLittleHomeschoolАй бұрын
Lol! Homeschoolers are out in the world every day, all day. They aren't stuck in a building, so they get to see and be a part of many different people's lives. Indoctrination...as if any education and the public school doesn't do that. The state school system in the US is based upon the Prussian model, which was created for the express purpose of indoctrination. And if the US is the worst educated, maybe you should ask why that is if we have such a wonderful education system. The majority of children in the US are enrolled in the government school system. Could it be that this is the cause of your supposed statistics? Don't blame homeschoolers for what the goverment is doing.

Tests are trash! Haha but as I’m preparing for a final for an undergrad class tonight, tests are an unfortunately essential part of higher academia. Once my kids are in high school I’ll teach them so they know the subject and then I’ll separately teach them how some classes are completely do this worksheet and pull the answers from this chapter and then do this test. I might make test taking a whole class because most of my college classes have nothing to do with learning but with getting good grades on homework and tests. It’s pretty obnoxious honestly.
@LittlebyLittleHomeschool2 ай бұрын
That's a great plan! And definitely something that kids need to be prepared for if they're on a college track. Have you found that college students use AI for note taking and test prep? I am curious as to how AI changes higher education.

I keep getting asked what about socialization, when I tell people that my husband and I are homeschooling our son which is only 2 years old right now so yeah we have time but yet they are scared that he's not going to be socialized which there is so many ways to give him socialization opportunities
@LittlebyLittleHomeschool4 ай бұрын
The socialization is usually the first words out of someone's mouth. And it's almost laughable as most homeschoolers have to say no to activities, so they can actually get some curriculum done and a little quiet time in their lives. The root is the misconception about "socialization." It's crazy how much the school systems has closed the general public's minds. I did do an episode all about this topic. You might find it helpful for your own concerns, but also to know how to approach this topic with others. {Also, I love that you already know you want to homeschool him!} podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/15-homeschooling-and-the-concern-about-socialization/id1607943103?i=1000553287128

You want to talk about family vacations during the school year, get a load of this doosy: Back in April of 2015, there was a guy right here in the Philadelphia area who took his two kids out of school to Boston because he was running in the Boston Marathon. Then all of a sudden, he gets a letter from the school's principal saying that it was an unexcused absence. Plus, it violated the state's mandatory school attendance laws. He then wrote the principal back, and he said that his kids learned more in the five days that they were in Boston than they would have sitting inside of a classroom. Plus, he would do it again if he had to.
@LittlebyLittleHomeschool9 ай бұрын
Wow! And that guy is right! Boston is amazing for so many learning experiences, especially a ton of history. Thanks for sharing this story!
@Lisa-di1wi9 ай бұрын
Although my school days were back in the 60's and 70's, and I never had children myself, I have done some research on parents taking their kids out of school for a family vacation. According to the schools' attendance policies and state laws, family vacations during the school year are unexcused absences. Although they get breaks during the school year and the summer off, family vacations during the school year are much cheaper than in the summer and on school breaks. A lot of parents can't afford to take family vacations during the summer. They also work full-time jobs as well. Depending on the type of jobs that they have, some parents can't afford to take family vacations during the summer. Plus, they want to avoid the summer crowds as well. It not only applies to the public schools, but to the private, the Catholic, and the other religious schools as well. Sure they're going to get flack from the teachers and school administrators. But it's the parents who have control over their kids and their education. Some of them don't like the idea of the schools telling them what can and can't do with their kids. Even some of the teachers won't give them make-up work either. And it's just not for family vacations either. The schools have to very strictly enforce their attendance policies and the states' mandatory attendance laws as well. They also wants parents to schedule medical appointments after school hours as well. After all, there are doctors who have evening and Saturday hours. Depending on the schools' attendance policies, they only consider illnesses where you have a written doctor's note, a death in the family, or a court appearance, as an example, as excused absences. Plus, if your kids aren't going to be in school that day, you have to notify the school by a certain time in the morning. If not, the school will call you to find out why your kids are not in school. Plus, they'll also take it to the next level, and the school will take legal action against them. I have also seen some stories on the TV news about parents being arrested and going to court because their kids were simply missing too much school. You're doing the right thing by homeschooling your kids. The schools today want to control all the details of your personal life, especially off the school grounds. Good luck to you in your homeschooling. You're doing the right thing by educating your kids on your terms instead of the school district's terms. Oh another thing, if kids miss too much school, it affects their state funding. They lose their state funding if the kids are not in school. Here in Pennsylvania, where I live at, and by law, K-12 students have to be in school for 180 days a year.
