Excellent video and thank your for the fantastic work you have done in the past. I'm a big fan. I'm sad to say that this video showcases a very lackluster combat system. Many times the math of Gudrun's attacks or "Saves" were automatic successes with dice only determining if it were a critical or not. The more I dig into this system the more I dislike it. Remember folks Gudrun is a beginning character with no experience. Auto hits and Auto saves at first level. In no point was ole Gudrun in any real danger. Sorry I'm sticking with Conan Modiphus 2d20, all the way.
@StarshipsSteel2 ай бұрын
There is technically no "Auto" success since a roll of a 1 is a failure, which I don't think I rolled during this scenario, hard to hit every single instance of the rules during a play through. I do agree though that without rolling a 1 there were auto successes. As for any real danger.... She is not in much danger from the minion scorpions, but the brood mother is 100% a threat. If I concentrate on killing the minion first then Gudrun loses almost every time, as it gives the Brood Mother what amounts to 1 or 2 more turns against Gudrun (which amounts to 4 more attacks) 2d20 will 100% be a better fit for some people over this system. I still think 2d20 is solid system (Conan and otherwise).

Hey! Believe it or not I considered going down that route for this system, maybe with Conan Exiles though. But as you noted these things take way more time than they should to get filmed, edited and get correct, rules wise.

The 2d20 thing took roughly 40 hours to complete. Imagine being a KZbin creator having to do that two/three times per week. Yours still does the job nicely for newcomers!

Wouldn't it be easier just to count all the damage roll instead of having to subtract the defense value? Seems like an extra calculation step. Do you think it's really necessary?
@StarshipsSteel3 ай бұрын
You don't subtract the defense value. Defense value is the number required to hit the target. Armor rating is subtracted from damage, as armor is a soak value in this rule set. It is only a factor for players and high difficulty monsters/NPCs. Most creatures and NPCs will just have a threshold value, and no armor rating to be concerned with.
Thanks for dropping a comment, glad you found it useful!

Any explanation yet on why the ability scores and the associated die type don't seem to be tied to one another as far as increasing? Thanks, great video!
@StarshipsSteel3 ай бұрын
At this time I've only seen the quickstart, so I don't have a real answer for you but my understanding is character advancement is going to be handled through the acquisition of new skills, and I suspect some of these skills will increase the die type and others the modifier. I will note that I couldn't find a single example of the modifier being larger than the die type, so that might act like some kind of control for it? These are all just guesses though. We will have to wait and see! Thanks for the comment!

You’re handling armor wrong. Armor roll successes reduce damage by 1, they don’t negate the attacker’s successes. It works out the same if the attacker is using a weapon that only does one damage and spends extra successes on extra damage; but it is not the same if the weapon does 2 or more damage, and armor won’t protect against other stunts that the attacker spends extra successes on.

Great video clarified more than a good few hours of watching let's plays 😄 One question I'm struggling with though that I cant seem to clarify. Does an active enemy (as per the book, actively stalking the players) know where the players are inherently? E.g. would you have an active xeno head straight to them, or wander aimlessly rather than sit passively. Unless of course the pcs left a trail or made a noise maybe?
@StarshipsSteel11 ай бұрын
Been a little while since I have gone over the rules in any detail, but I suspect there is no RAW rule, but my take would be generally on a case by case basis. However if the Xeno has started to stalk the players for whatever reason, ie actively hunt them, it probably knows where they are. If it doesn't, why is it stalking? After that is answered you should be able to determine what it would realistically do.

Sure. 1. Roll20 works just fine. I have a lot of stuff in it and everyone can just log in with no downloading. 2. To get the same functionality 24/7 online access foundry offers me no cost savings.
@daved.8483 Жыл бұрын
@StarshipsSteel I can see that having invested money in roll20 can be quit the reason for not leaving. However, free league material is mostly supported on foundry. Also, players do not need to download anything to use it. In terms of logging in 24/7 There are 3rd party providers such as The Forge or Molten. Specifically, The Forge does not require you to install the software on your machine. Regardless, I've come across you for your videos about Alien RPG rather than discussing the vtt you use. I've subbed you as well. Thank you again.🫡

In my old age and the quest for automated systems for RPGs, I have decided it is not the way. I have a very automated Conan 2d20 sheet I wrote for Roll20 that my players use, but I think it might have been simpler to have not done that and just played it like a tabletop. (and yes the Conan 2d20 module on Foundry is cool as well) There is a lot I like about Foundry, but as soon as I go the path of using the Forge the monthly cost is essentially the same as Roll20. I am really less concerned with the cost sunk into Roll20 as I don't buy content from their store, I do most of it myself or upload 3rd party maps. But that is the crux of it I have a LOT uploaded. :) Thanks for the subscription! Not a lot of content these days, but hoping to start putting some stuff out sooner rather than later!

Question: The sheet is calculating Ranged Damage Bonus from Coordination, but the rulebook says it comes from Awareness. I searched for FAQs and errata but can find no mention of a discussion about it. Which is correct?

Old Warhorse not dead yet! I have been able to update both the HitLoc layout and also change the Ranged Damage Bonus position and calculation. I found the description in the charsheet that confirms Awareness governs Ranged Damage Bonus. Finding the assignment of the value in the js using "coordination" was ok, but it took me a moment to find the constant that defines the bonus to be based on "coordination" to be changed to "awareness" Is there a way we can contact each other directly? Thank you so much for this. It looks extremely helpful. I had been looking for something that would do more than the openly available sheet in Roll20, especially in the housekeeping of dice pool, momentum and doom. I don't have much experience of GMing with Roll20 and while I was a programmer a long time ago, I've hardly touched html, css or javascript. I was looking forward to the challenge, but realistically it would take me many scores of hours to get where you have. I have set it up and will give you feedback as I can. The only quick thought I have is the layout of the Soak panel. If I'm looking at the figure head on, in my head I'd expect to see right and left reversed which would also put the shield by the left arm. I'll see if I can work out that change. If not, I'll come crawling for help :) Cheers!
@StarshipsSteel3 жыл бұрын
That is a fair comment on the left/right on the panel, I do have them reversed. On the positive side I don't believe they do anything besides track the level of soak so it should be an easy fix. Also switch them around will place the shield on the correct side.

However, a tiered list of positions and their skills like you provided for this video made it crystal clear. A sheet like that has to exist or I swear I'm just going to do it on a dry erase board or something.

@keithjohnson33573 жыл бұрын
Humans and synthetics are included in the rules, but there isn't a big difference between a PC human and an NPC human. ie Humans don't have signature attacks like the Xenos and other monsters do.
@rcgunner70863 жыл бұрын
They just follow the basic combat rules. This would have been a very different combat if the two PCs were facing a human. Humans don't have armor (*except for marines) so unless they block or something those damage points go straight through. Most humans also only have 4 or so health points, so Pace probably would have beaten a normal human to down to broken with that second swing!

If this is what a typical combat round is like with the star of the show, it means as a DM that wants to build a campaign with some staying power and character building, you have to provide the players with both a strong enough sense of dread to avoid such an encounter, and enough opportunities to get the hell out of there when an encounter is imminent. Compared to D&D, Alien RPG feels like you have 0,1% of the diversity of the monster cast so it's like "You're tired of fighting rats for 3 levels? Ok, here's a Beholder, glhf"
@StarshipsSteel3 жыл бұрын
The game has two general play styles. Cinematic and Campaign. Cinematic is a one shot with a high death count most likely, ie almost everyone dies in the films. Campaign mode is designed to be a longer run with your characters surviving for a longer haul. Campaign games are going to be less combat driven and more RP driven for sure, and you are certainly not going to be facing an Xenomorph every session. One of the problems most RPG players will have with it is the lack of a monster manual. You have a few alien species, and then the most horrific creature in the Alien universe. Man.
