Can't beat a Beautiful Classic Half Cab Double Decker Bus . Bet the new Plastic ev buses won't last 15years

I was born in July 1974; and traveled extensively on London Transport services, while my interest solely lies with the Underground, I used to love travelling on the old Route-Master buses, primarily because I loved the ambience of their interiors with their low wattage tungsten lighting which harmonised with the interior colour scheme.

Thanks for the video. The design of some of the older LT buses is quite prescient. The area nearside headlamp of the T type is a bit like a Routemaster. The ECW body of the RFW foreshadows the later bodies by ECW for later MWs and then the REs. Was the same designer employed?
@bobhodgestransportDVDsАй бұрын
Interesting points, T448 is a 9T9 type AEC Regal with Weymann bodywork, originally these buses were on Greenline work, they were succeeded by the 10T10 type which had the same chassis but were bodied by the the LPTB at their Chiswick works, the nearside headlamp and mudguard reverted to the traditional separate design, perhaps the 9T9 combined mudguard/headlamp assembly was a Weymann design feature although I am sure that the LPTB would have had a say in the way the bus looked. When the 10T10 and TF classes of coaches came into service in 1938, the 9T9's were relegated to bus work, (the TF was the Leyland Tiger FEC underfloor engine coach, none of which survived into preservation). I agree about the similarity with the Routemaster nearside headlamp/mudguard design. Regarding the RFW, these were built in 1951, the chassis was the then new AEC Regal IV underfloor engine type, 20 were built, the first 5 were for Tilling Transport, a small coaching unit in London owned by the nationalised British Transport Commission, however they were diverted to London Transport who were desperate for coaches for their private hire fleet because of the Festival of Britain which took place in London in 1951. Another 10 were deilivered to LT in early 1951 and 5 went to Tilling Transport. Regarding the design, in 1951 the standard ECW coach body was built on Bristol L front engine chassis, although it was full front in an effort to make it look modern, ECW were also still making half cab bodies for buses on Bristol L type chassis. ECW had bodied 2 Bristol LS prototype buses in 1950 but they did not start building coaches on LS chassis until 1952, I don't think that this body looks very much like the RFW although it was probably the same design team, I think that the LS coach body owes more to the bodies built on the front engine chassis, the RFW design remained a one off, the 5 Tilling RFW's were later rebodied by ECW with MW style coach bodies. I think one of these has survived into preservation. The ECW bodies from these coaches weren't initially scrapped some of them at least were mounted on older underfloor engine chassis. 10 of the RFW's were exported to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1964 where they were in service as coaches for a long time, some as late as 1980. Hope this is all of interest.

Interesting. How did the tram at the end of the video end up in Southwold? 🤔
@bobhodgestransportDVDsАй бұрын
It was one of 3 that went to the County Donegal Railway at Fintown where preservationists have opened about 3 miles of track for heritage trains. Sometime ago the 3 trailers were surplus to requirements, the Southwold Railway acquired one of them in 2010/11. I have read that there is another one of these trailers in Wiltshire restored to Charleroi livery, this also possibly came from Donegal. My photo was taken on 22nd May 2019 and as far as I know the tram is still at the Southwold Railway.

So, far this year, Metrobus have lost 6325, 6550, 6551, 6627, 6630, 6631, 6633, 6945, 6946, and 6948, and have gained 6401, 6404, 6405, 6406, 6411, 6907, 6908, 6909, 6910, 6911, 6912, 6931, 6932, 6933, 6934, 6935, 6936 and 6937. A net increase of 8 buses. And that doesn't include the buses that haven't entered service yet, that may or may not have been delivered yet, i.e. 6402, 6403, 6407, etc, or eventually the 68xx buses.
@bobhodgestransportDVDsАй бұрын

What an absolutely stunning restoration! Massive kudos and thanks to ALL those involved, from machine shop and sparkies to fundraisers, archivists, chippies, upholsterers, procurement, painting and those who spent hours overcoming the challenges of modern legislation. My big time favourite shot was of E/1R 1622 from No.1's upper deck. Great to see LCC106 out and about. It is an amazing survivor. Almost like old times! Get Kingsway (half) open for use? Oh yes ... Not a snowball in hell's chance of a tram day in Croydon I s'pose? Oh well .... a chap can dream ....

One note: As far is im aware, all the tram lines and systems are considered trams, not ligh rail. In saying that, I realise that the BN trams formerly of the Kusttram and Charleroi are called BN LRV (light rail vehicle) but its always called the trams lines. Antwerpen is completely a tram system but parts of that is underground and classified as a "Pre-Metro" Ghent doesn't have any underground sections at all, and brussels has its own seperate metro i believe. Also the trams running at the coastal tram have since been retired, 3 examples have been preserved, the remainder has been scrapped.
@bobhodgestransportDVDs3 ай бұрын
I have videos of the coastal tramway in 2023 which shows both the BN trams and new CAF trams in operation, plus videos of Gent and Antwerp for their 150th anniversaries in 2023 and 2024, all on You Tube.
