I dont mean this negatively i just mean the RC handing the curating of commander to wotc might have been coming for longer than we think. idk and lastly i absolutely 100% doubt that the power brackets thing WOTC is proposing as a guideline for rule 0 conversation will work. all decks are a 7 and basing them on which cards the card has only really works as a point system like how the canadian highlander format does it i guess... but also then you expect everyone to register their decklists online on some online tool that will spit out how many points their deck is worth, or smth....?

The best strategy is probably +1/+1 counters. It only modifies P/T while base power still stays 2/2. So a creature with base 2/2 and 4 +1/+1 counters on it would still get the +3/+3 buff when it attacks. This helps immensely with the fact that we are only(or for the majority) running 2/2s. If Duskana is not around your strategy would fall apart. But by running a 1/1 counter strategy, your messily base 2/2s can still pack a punch without Duskana being around, adding more survivability overal!

Don't give extra mulligans, It just promotes greedier deckbuilding, for example, some of my decks need to balance having few land, since they have a lot of draw, and thus more lands muck up the late game, with having more lands, since you need to cast spells. Since you get one free mulligan even before we hand out extra's from it being a multiplayer game, It is mathematically correct to put in less land intentionally (assuming you get the draw engine online consistently and early, for example, a commander like sram). After all, if you hand out a free resource, would be a shame if it went unused.

I feel like this is a case of the player rather than the rule. There are some that will abuse any opportunity given to them but just as it's important to see how a bad hand feels, you need a few good/playable ones too to see if your payoffs are in the right direction or enough for the deck. True friends/those who care about their decks and the game will mulligan until they have a 2-3 land hand to keep most of the time rather then going 5-8 deep for the perfect opener like that where you can play 4+ cards on turn 1

Agreed. And, working through this process has opened up a can of worms mentally for me, now I'm seeing so much variance in four player's unique approaches to the game that isn't tempered by consistent rules. No, Rule 0 is ruining the LGS experience. It's entirely based on the perceptions, interpretations, honesty and communications skills of 3 other people which is inherently non reliable.
@paulbuckley23013 ай бұрын
I don't think Rule Zero is your problem here, as its purpose is simply to open a line of dialogue between players before the game starts. THAT, by itself, can not ruin anything. A vague power level system is more the problem, where everyone claims their deck is a "seven." Also, expectations about the exact definition of "Casual" Commander as opposed to Competitive vary from person to person. Rule Zero, when used properly, will only help to bring these problems more into focus so deck selections can be matched up better before the Breya Combo player stomps a table of casuals.
@PressXtoDoubt3 ай бұрын
@@paulbuckley2301 your first point is automatically mute when you than later talk about how the expectations of casual varies from person to person. Two people can speak entirely truthful and honest statements and there could still be a gap in honest communication. Rule 0 relies heavily on the communication skills, honesty, and understanding of all players involved. Rule 0 was originally intended to only be a conversation to INCLUDE cards not exclude or pseudo ban cards. A legitimate ban list would help bring the format back to this original line of thinking. Everyone thinking they're deck is a 7 is the exact reason why rule 0 is a horrible practice and there should just be an all out ban on all mana positive mana rocks and all tutors that are highly specific. Also all reserved list cards although that's not really about power level more about future playability. Your statement after "Rule 0, when used properly" is entirely pointless because again. This is under the assumption that everyone in your pod has absolute clear, honest and perfect communication. Which when playing with new people at my LGS automatically means rule 0 is out the window.
@paulbuckley23013 ай бұрын
Okay, so no more Rule Zero. People are no longer allowed to talk before they play. Problem solved?
@PressXtoDoubt3 ай бұрын
@@paulbuckley2301 no actually ban OP cards to make rule 0 pointless. Literally no one would miss mana positive mana rocks and highly general tutors that get your wombo combo turn 3. There is literally 0 reasons why in a casual format you can play cards over 100$. This would also mean Rule 0 would go back to the way it was intended meaning to only INCLUDE not EXCLUDE. If my deck gets rule 0'd at the LGS I can pull a whole other deck out of thin air. But if something is banned and you wanna play with it you are probably wise enough to have another deck with you because you know.... It's banned. The only people that would complain are the scalpers that invest their 401K in cardboard.
Generally, my friend group allows for mulligans as long as it's reasonably aggreeable that your hand was just unplayable. Like if you draw 6 or 7 land and an expensive card that doesn't do much or you draw no land or 1 land with no card draw or cheap(below 4 mana) cards to play generally we all agree that that is an 'unplayable hand' and allow for a mulligan. I especially appreciate this rule as i am notoriously unlucky and will often draw dead hands over and over again no matter whose deck i play. I think my record for zero land hands in a row is a modest three but given the deck wasn't particularly low on mana that is still impressive I often will keep hands with only 2 lands or with 5 lands and sub-optimal cards just because i recognize that the point of mulligan friendly rules is to give you a fighting chance, it's not to give you a great hand. Ultimately, most commander games we play go very long and we don't want someone sitting there not playing the game. I don't think we've had an issue of people stacking their hands yet and if we play with strangers at the game shop we would ask about their mulligan preferences.

My playgroups have experimented with two alternative mulligan rules. The first is the same as the London, except you don't shuffle the mulled hands back in until you keep a hand. This saves on time shuffling and puts a risk that you know specific cards won't be able to be drawn in subsequent hands. The second option we've tried is to draw three opening hands (7, 7, 7) and pick one from the three to keep. Shuffle the others away and take no further mulligans.

I like using a rule where when you take your free mull using the London system you can show your hand. if its deemed by the other players to be unplayable (or at least nobody says anything against it) you get an additional mull. it functions like the "just mull till playable" but can be used with strangers you cannot trust to be honest with their mulls. it also means if someone wants to be risky and mull a hand that would be playable then they can but would have to face the risks of doing that with no casual rule.
