Tbh it would be more powerful using subs of some sort (1st or 2nd) for the low notes but I love how you kept pretty much all of it in chest I wish I could hit a low note as good as 2:01 and im a baritone😭

The G1s in the start are not chest notes. I have heard a chested G1 and it's a lot cleaner than this (There is a man in the Cornell choir who can sing it and fill a theater). Geoff is using subs to sing the G1.
@lumi51647 күн бұрын
also at 1:53 this is a growl (unvoiced fricative exhale). It's too soft to be subs or chest-fry.
@jmbmusic16 күн бұрын
@@lumi5164 I‘ve been listening to Geoff Castellucci and dozens of other bass singers for the past few years and I can 100% guarantee to you that all the notes in this video are named correctly. Some of them have even been confirmed by Geoff in comments or in other ways. And I will always be able to differentiate a subharmonic from a chest note (at least when it comes to Geoff’s subs and chest notes). And growl is so vastly different that it would be very easy to identify that.
@lumi51645 күн бұрын
As someone with a very similar range to Geoff, I can confirm comparing my G1 (with subs) to Geoff's here, as well as to both the G1 I've heard in person as well as classical performance G1s, that my subharmonic sounds nearly identical to Geoff's G1 (after a little voicing) as well as is a lot more click-y (?) than a real chested G1. Also the growl note I pointed out he confirmed to be as such. if you are comparing to how notes are labeled in the various videos online to write these, those are also typically inaccurate. If not, then I would suggest checking again as well.
@lumi51645 күн бұрын
I can also tell from how easy he is singing subharmonics in that low 2nd octave as well as high first that the corresponding fundamentals there are already low for Geoff. After all, his range is definitely more aligned with a baritone given the power he gets higher up compared to the sound of his low notes (something else he has also confirmed).
@jmbmusic14 күн бұрын
@@lumi5164 Alright, let’s go over all the notes in this video… G1 from Misty Mountains: This one is easily chest. Compare it to his G1 Subharmonic note earlier in the song and you‘ll hear a HUGE difference. Overtones are completely different, the weight of the note is much heavier and it sounds exactly like all his other G1 chest notes that he’s been singing the past few years. G1‘s from ACA Disney: This one is recorded long before Geoff even knew about subharmonics, and growl would sound way different (more air, less overtones) F#1 Kidnap the Sandy Claws: Confirmed to be subharmonic by Geoff on his Q&A F#1 in Country Roads: not sure if he confirmed it, but it’s a very obvious Subharmonic note. F1 in Daddy sang bass: He confirmed that LIVE he sang a growl note (which is also very obvious from the recordings of it) AND there are actually several F1 growl notes throughout the song in the background bass line. Now compare those to the F1 at the end of the song. It’s a very different sound. The growl notes have a lot of air in it and other than that just a pure bass frequency. I will admit that the Subharmonic F1 at the end sounds different to a lot of Geoff‘s newer subs but that‘s just due to it being one of his earliest recorded low subharmonics. He sings it more quietly which results in a rounder and less overtone-rich sound. Still, you can hear the very distinctive Subharmonic sound at the end of the note cause it’s held just a fraction longer than the other notes of the chord. A growl or chest note would never sound like that. I hope I was able to clear this situation up and that you can hear all the things that I explained here. I can’t explain all of this more detailed in a KZbin comment so I will stop here. If you still hear the notes as other techniques, I‘m sorry. All of this is confirmed by multiple sources and good friends that are also basses who know Geoff’s voice thoroughly. But if want to keep debating, feel free to join the Bass Singing Nation Discord server (link in description) and let these people there explain it to you further. I am done with this conversation. Have a nice day and keep enjoying bass singers!

How do I tell if my subs are first or second?
@jmbmusic110 күн бұрын
@@tizwigtfc6566 When you sing a comfortable middle to low range chest note and add some relaxation or tension to it a note exactly an OCTAVE below will appear. That is a first sub. If you now find the sweet spot WITHIN that subharmonic note, add the right tension or relaxation, a note exactly a FIFTH below the first subharmonic will appear. Now THAT is a second sub. It‘s HIGHLY unlikely that you are accidentally singing second subs as they are way more difficult to hit than first subs. Hope this helps.
