At the hip? Or the foot?
@mamboqueen99910 ай бұрын
@@Ikaikadowsett I’ll go with both. I have tight hips. I can train myself by doing lots of stretching/strength training to get some level of improvement. For the feet, again, it takes training to get turnout. Some people do have it naturally, but I’d say most don’t.
@Ikaikadowsett10 ай бұрын
@@mamboqueen999 it’s hard to say. The literature seems to suggest a small amount of turnout at the foot is common “The normal FPA is an out-toeing angle of the foot that ranges from 5 ° in children11 to 13 ° in adults.” Foot progression angle is slight in most people.
@mamboqueen99910 ай бұрын

It's adorable how you guys are tip-toeing around the simple demographic reality of this country: baby boomers drove every consumer trend of the last 50 year (yes, including ballroom dancing). Baby boomers are aging, and that's what you see in ballroom competitions - the average age of pro/am student is going up. The generations following baby boomers are not big enough to replace them. Unless this industry finds an affordable way to participate, this trend is irreversibly down. Or, and alternative source of revenue, like advertisement and business sponsorship.

I love your “grow the pie” challenge! But I really think it is the longevity that you have to also consider. The dancing is one cost, but the ancillary costs are prohibitive, unless you get the organization to support this growth.
@Ikaikadowsett11 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for the comment. Which sort of ancillary costs do you mean?
@LeeWender11 ай бұрын
@@Ikaikadowsett general costs from the organizers, costs for hair, dress, makeup (which, let’s face it, judges are harsh about- even in bronze), etc. The “normal” person will spend 600.00 for 1 set of singles, a multi dance, and entry to ballroom. For 15 minutes of dancing in a competition, it’s still hard to stomach. Then 200.00 for hair and makeup, and 300.00 to rent a dress. Without teacher costs. I hate to say it but many new dancers are going to West Coast Swing comps where it’s 200.00 for a full weekend of dancing. It would be lovely for ballroom to build a more accessible opportunity to build to the BIG expense comps. I’m impressed with how WCS has thousands come in a weekend (we have 3 in our area yearly) and the pros invite newbies all the time to dance. I love ballroom, but there are other models that are far more inviting to “regular folk”…
@Ikaikadowsett11 ай бұрын
@@LeeWender Yes a fair critique of the current state of things👍
@LeeWender11 ай бұрын
@@Ikaikadowsett in my idealistic thinking, the organizers could create a “ no-frills” New to ballroom category that would halve the entries, and allow no costumes or extra expenses (yes, actually not allow them to add the glam stuff), for one year. Truly a “bring in the regular people”… 🤗

I find the magic of couple dancing is the cooperation of two opposites. The polar opposite in temperament, sensibility, thinking patterns come together to make something work. I wonder what is it like in same sex couple. Honestly asking. We also have a good size gay community. They don't seem to have a problem dancing with opposite sex. I wonder what do they think about dancing with opposite sex and same sex.

This conversation was the proof that misogyny and patriarchy are the roots of the Ballroom culture. Judging men for wearing dresses and celebrating beautiful women who dance with each other... Why not celebrate everyone? What's the point of dancing and competing after all? Be conforming to a standard? Right... That's exactly why LGBTQIA+ get overwhelmed about Ballroom culture. That's why there are so few BiPOC people in Ballroom. Thanks for the initiative of discussing about this though 🙏🏽✨

Great conversation! As a pro/am competitor, I agree wholeheartedly about the comps/organizers needing to really “host”- feeling appreciated for US spending our time and money at your comp is important. I love to dance, and compete, but I have a choice of where I go! And you (organizers) have one chance to make me feel like I am at a comp worth my money! And many comps have lost me as a willing competitor because I feel they do not attend to the pro/am interests.

Donny knows very well that there has always been opposing camps going way back. Eg. Nina Hunt vs. Water Laird. The only remedy is to not have judges coach, so there pocket book isn't involved, and that will not happen.
