I noted to Octopus Energy that their Dynamic Charing (Smart Charging) has a brilliant feature which allows THEM to select your charge time and even if it is in peak hours you only get charged the 7p night rate...’ Brilliant!!’ I hear you say... But I also noted a really really big problem…. IF YU HAVE BATTERIES ON YOUR PV SYSTEM YOU NEED TO KOW THIS. OCTOPUS IS NOT TELLING YOU THIS AND THEY SHOULD! If you have a PV system (as many do) with battery storage and the Dynamic Octopus decides to charge in daytime (which it often does)... It charges from YOUR BATTERIES and not their grid... So all the 7p per KWH you saved up for the washer, cooking etc is used up in the daytime charging.... for their benefit not of yours, but for Octopus optimal buying. This feature also stops you charging batteries during off peak and selling back to the grid at peak… something lots of us do. It also helps balance the grid. Here is a solution you do not listen to. Allow people to opt out off peak time and do your dynamic management within the 6 hours off peak period. Telling me to sign up to a costlier product is not the answer. On the written advice of another Octopus rep I have detached my device…. Thus I can manually charge at night. If Octopus can make the dynamic system drain the grid in the daytime and not my batteries I would not even need a smart turn off button…. Nor would anyone else. Octopus get a lot of things right,, their biggest failing is recognising when they get something wrong

Some very interesting points here. The opening section is particularly good, explaining about the grid and producer level charges when there is too much wind or other renewable energy available. We have tried to get on to Octopus Intelligent Go, but failed. Trying to get one of the cars to charge - with the test charge - wasted a day. The car - a Tesla M3 - should be compatible. The charger works, but is not curently on the Octopus list of "approved" chargers. We know that the BP Pulse charger can send and receive information from data centres, as there was an issue with the first model we had, but the BP service team knew the details of the charge by examining it remotely. It is not clear how Octopus is going to communicate with either the chargers or the cars. Is that by broadband internet, mobile internet or some other way? We live in an area with poor mobile internet and phone connections, though the broadband connection into the house is good. Internet connection inside the house is not always good, as the WiFi signals do not always cover the whole house well. We have ways of improving internal connectivity, for example using additional links with Powerline connections to an additional WAP situated in regions which are badly covered. Wireless extenders work relatively poorly in comparison to the mains wired links. The charging point is not situated in a good location for unboosted WiFi - though with a suitable bit of extra internal infrastructure this can be overcome. One possible problem with this is that this may make our home network vulnerable to attack - but I won't specify how. Finally though, as we don't need gas for any appliances, we are switching to Tomato, which appears to offer tariffs which are compatible, and very similar to tariffs we had before which worked well for us. The Tomato Lifestyle tariff probably won't suit everyone, as it depends on how much electricity is needed, and when it is needed - points which you raise in your video. Other factors to consider are whether users also have solar panels and/or batteries. Solar panels can make a significant difference to electricity consumption from the grid - somewhat surprisingly even in the winter. Batteries may - or may not - help. We would like batteries to reduce the effects of power cuts, but only a few battery types offer that in the UK, as they have to be switched into an isolation mode if there is a power outage, to ensure the safety of workers on the power feeds. Not all companies offer sensible tariffs which work with solar and batteries - and there may be a lot of variation. Some users like to rely on payment from Feed in tariffs to offset usage charges, but how they work may vary from company to company. We also have an air source heat pump [ASHP] and underfloor heating. These are potentially a good thing from the point of view of overall energy consumption, though a few words of warning: "Heat pump ratings in kW are output ratings, not input ratings. So a gas or oil boiler rated at say 25-35 kW will have a heat output which is likely to be 2 to 3 times more than an ASHP - perhaps rated at say 17kW. Because of the efficiency ratings [CoP] for ASHPs - typically between 2.5 to 3.5, the electrical energy input to an ASHP is likely to be less - say 6kW for a 17kW rated ASHP. While ASHPs can be a good thing in some situations, for many houses and flats in the UK these are not really a sensible option being too big for small houses, and tricky and expensive to install. In countries, such as Sweden, where communal heating is available, ASHPs are likely a very good option, but require different infrastructure. In Denmark some houses are close to thermal power stations, so although those are inefficient in terms of energy production, the heat is distributed to local houses - again a different infrastructure, and offsets some of the inefficiencies of the generating stations.

Thank you and your insight and analysis was very refreshing! I believe that the car connection is solely using the data connection to the car (in most cases) and charger integration is Wifi. Good news is that the amount of bandwidth is essentially a non-issue. However, as mentioned you may need some extenders to reach chargers lets say in a garage. I don't think about this too much as I have a mesh system. As I mentioned IOG is not perfect, and frankly I would discredit myself if I said it was. I would absolutely look into Tomato Energy (especially as I was enquiring about their solar scheme), but I think the current user information is a bit hit and miss. I wouldn't recommend something I haven't tested myself. Maybe next year! I am torn about ASHP, I think your points echo the key issues of cost and utility. I was looking at ASHP when my gas boiler was condemned, and the pricing just wasn't justifiable (this was just pre-£7500 grant too). I felt that if I had the time I could justify Air-Air as it gave cooling as well, but I was too busy wondering how I would make it through the last cold month!

Controversially, I am planning on plugging in my EV via its granny cable when I get home from work 5pm ish and unplugging it again around 6:30am the following day (I do about 70 miles a day), Should I just stick to my EoN SVT?
@KCTalksEV
@KCTalksEV Ай бұрын
Assuming you will be charging for 12-13 hours a day, purely on time you would be fine with the 3 pin plug. Main safety to check is the wiring between the socket and your consumer unit. I don't want to be responsible for any fires! However, something like E:ON next drive V4 may be better as the price differencial (let's assume 20kWh to do 70 miles a day) would be about: SVT: 20 x 25p = £5 END: 20 x 6.9p = £1.39 That is a huge difference per day, and even with the slight increase in standing charge and peak rate you may be better off. Use the calculator I've provided and check the results. I have yet to update it to V4 however you you can add your regions pricing as you see fit. I do a similar 70 miles a day when I'm back at home, and the off peak tariffs make a lot of sense.

@KCTalksEV Hi, many thanks for your reply. In terms of safety, I will be plugging the EV into a brand new socket with RCD protection in the garage which in turn has its own consumer unit, separate from the main house consumer unit, this is about as safe as I can get for a 3 pin plug. Wouldn't I save yet more more switching to O.E.?
@KCTalksEV
@KCTalksEV Ай бұрын
In that case, hopefully you should be fine. It's just that I wouldn't recommend a 3-pin socket for use all of the time. That being said, I do use my 3-pin charger at a pinch. Regarding IOG, the BYD vehicles do not have support directly with IOG, hence you would need a charger that supports it. Something like a Hypervolt or a MyEnergi Zappi. END has the benefit of not requiring a specific charger or car, but also is with your current energy provider, so the switch is going to be (hopefully) significantly faster.

Very good video. I noticed that the the windows were misted up and have heard that the BYD Dolphin and ATTO 3 have a problem with misty windows. Did you find that to be a problem? I also noticed that you drove it at night and have heard that the illumination provided by the headlights is not very good. Did you find that to be a problem? On speaking with a salesman at a BYD dealer, I was told that the dealer has no control over the tyres and you get the tyres that come with the car. The Hankook tyres are supposed to be 3dB quieter than the Linglong tyres as well. The only downside of getting other tyres, apart from the cost, is you don't get dolphins on the sidewall of the tyres. However, I can live without that. I have a Nissan Note that will be 11 years old in January and would like to replace it with an EV in order to reduce pollution. The Dolphin seems to be a good replacement and the white and grey Design trim Dolphin is at the top of the list.

Thanks for watching! Answering your questions: 1) Misting of the windows is never a problem provided you are using heating and/or air conditioning to remove humidity - as a side note my videos will always have misty windows because I don't want the fan noise in the video. 2) Headlamps were not a major issue - the best car I've ever had for headlights have been the MG ZS EV, but those were blinding! 3) Tyres were an odd issue - I felt the Hankook's would likely be more efficient, and also less likely to spin its tyres from a standstill It's great you're thinking of going EV - currently there are some great offers for EVs - I would reccomend going onto CarWow and waiting for some deals, I was offered some stupidly good deals for the Dolphin! Have you got home charging and/or workplace charging? If you had to rely on ultra-rapid charging, you may not save any money, but if it's pollution you may not care as much.

@@KCTalksEV Many thanks for your quick and informative reply. I am a retired old git with a double garage and driveway so the plan is to charge as much as possible at home. I keep my cars for about 11 years, with the slow charging at home as well as the Dolphin having LFP batteries, it is hoped that the batteries will last 11 years as well. I don't go that far, but need the range in case that I do. Last month I went to a Maine Coon cat show in Tamworth. It is not that far from where I live, but the range drops dramatically with high speed driving. I have found some good deals on Autotrader, but will look at CarWow next year when I plan to change the car. So far the cheapest place is at Grimsby (which is not named after me), but the BYD dealer is very close to the sea and I am not sure if that will start body corrosion. I will ask a friend about that. From your videos, I think that you live there. Thanks again for your assistance.
@KCTalksEV
@KCTalksEV Ай бұрын
I think you have the perfect recipe to go EV then! Regarding range, as long as you're not the person to exceed speed limits (and I should tell you not to!), You can eek out a decent range. On my range test (published soon) I could easily get over 200 miles which isn't too far off and is representative of motorway driving. You are certainly right with LFP. I discussed it on the Atto 3 video, with the lifecycle mileage of around 700,000 miles before the pack drops to 80% health, so I don't think anyone needs to worry! I wouldn't even worry about rapid charging the pack, any damage is greatly exaggerated. Aging due to time has been studied less, but looking at the research it's mostly use that causes damage. I actually live in Hull and Grimsby, and the sea air doesn't seem to cause too much damage to my ZS EV, and that was a car infamously known for a rust protection issue when it first was released. I'm not too concerned! P.S: I love Maine coons so you might see me around the shows 😂

You set a schedule, for instance I want to add 50% charge by 5pm every other day, and it will work out when best to charge to get that done. If it can't work out how to get it done by the time selected it will let you know and you have the option of charging at peak price (~23p/kWh) but as long as you use a schedule you will only pay just under 7p/kWh. Apart from having a faulty wall box (not OVO's fault obviously) it's worked seamlessly

So I bought my first EV a month ago, kept myself on the fixed Octopus tariff and my energy bill went up £60 last month (as expected with the new EV) - I have an Ohme Pro 3, and an Audi E-Tron so both are compatible with IOG, so I made the switch yesterday on the app, I told it my car and charger, and it all hooked up nicely! Now... it says 7p per kWh for 11:30pm and 5:30am, and I've gone into my Ohme app and told it to charge my car to 80% every day by 5:30am, so this should be plenty for most days. So if I plug my car in at say 70% at 6pm when I get home, am I correct in saying it will not charge automatically until the off-peak hours charging rate? (11:30-5:30) without me having to tell it? as I have specified in the Ohme app I want it to be at 80% by 5:30am every morning. Also what happens if say I have e.g. 10% power left, it will have to start charging well before 11:30pm to get it to 80% by 5:30am, probably around 8pm, would it suddenly start charging at that time, knowing that it'll take that long to get it to 80%? and will that be charged at my usual 22p per kWh for the hours it is charging outiside of the off-peak time? And when in off-peak charging times, is this JUST for my EV charger, or for my house as well? can I set timers on my washing machine, tumble dryer, dish washer etc to go off at say mid night to be in this 7p per kWh zone? Thank you!

How much cheap rate time outside the fixed off peak window (23:30-05:30) do you find Octopus give you in a given day / week? 🙂

Dont bother with Intelligent Octopus Go, use Tomato Energy instead. 6 hrs at 5p, 4 hrs at 13.17p, 14 hrs at 23p, standing charge 43p, loads cheaper than octopus. No compatibility hoops to jump through either.

I have questions as to how on earth they're pulling a lower standing charge and also a lower peak and off peak rate, worries me to recommend them

@@johnb80 expect them to go bust like many others. Also I have heard when people switch it takes a long time to get off their standard tariff to their 5p/kwh tariff. I will avoid until I know they are a reputable and quick to act company.

@@KCTalksEV where do you think the excessive profits of the others come from? A good chunk of it is from OTT standing charge. I changed to them and got the 5p rate from day 1 so now you’ve ‘heard’ different !

Which model will get a good resale value after 100k miles ?

Depends on what you mean by good, and also no car (exception maybe a Volvo estate) has a good resale value once you take it beyond 100k miles

Great video. One of the best things about EVs up North is the interest from EV-curious members of the public. Thanks to the admin team for making it happen.

That is a sweeping statement 🧐 Let me know where the deception is, and let me know where the undebunkable truths. Are EVs perfect? Absolutely not. But to even think that keeping internal combustion going for most transport is a reasonable solution is delusional

Thank you. Your well informed and balanced review should be seen by a wider audience. I am a big fan of Octopus who have broken the utility culture and expect to return to them in the near future. However, for our use case with EV, five adult household and PV/Home battery, that extra hour in the morning using EON Drive and their current export rate (SEG) of £0.165kWh for excess PV generation makes perfect sense, even (if not more so) during significant periods of the winter when peak time consumption remains under control without too much day-to-day geeky management behaviour on my part. To your views who read the comments, beware other KZbinrs who seem to be increasingly reliant on the commission paid by Octopus. Mike.
