why do they add end caps? seems silly.. why not just have it closed like the old days

Because the old bats with closed ends were all aluminum. Nowadays most bats are composite and an end cap is the easiest/cheapest way to seal the end of the barrel.

On most bats it means the bat is illegal for sanctioned play...some bats have "special" compression numbers that go below that mark.

Big Dawg, seen the kid play. Saw him break his bat and then his Mother asked if anyone had a 31 drop 5 that he could use and he crushed them with their bat. You are trash picking a child.

Then I stand corrected....It is very, very hard to believe a 31" bat can generate bat speeds high enough to propel a ball 500ft especially with 1.15BPF standards but hey, what do I know?

Real players don't need to alter their bats, those of us who can hit bombs with pretty much any bat we use and no they aren't altered. When I see a guy who weighs a buck 40 and is hitting the ball 350 feet, that's a big red flag that this guy is using an altered bat. In my mind and those of us who don't cheat, the pussies are those who alter their bats, it shows a lack of talent.

High school players shouldn't use metal bats. They're big kids now they should be using wood.
