As we get older, its so much easier to maintain it than to obtain it. Aging is not all bad news, I am still finding progress even though I am getting older, the key for me is the strategy changes over time away from pure effort to more about recovery. I still push myself, but recovery is crucial - I get more out of improving sleep, diet, or finding a new recovery method for muscles than I do from doing "more" work like what worked in my youth. If you have maintained your body your likely already at a high level, there is no reason to kill yourself anymore, it is time to be smart with pushing within limits and make sure your recovering properly - if not back off and recoup.

Not saying you’re wrong, just curious - how does grappling improve bone strength? Never heard that before.
@djmyrick
@djmyrick Күн бұрын
I believe it’s the stress and challenge to the bones that keep them strong, and even make them stronger. That’s why you’ll see weightlifting in most lists. But consider the stress and challenge we put on our bones through grappling. Submissions would be the highest end of stress, but our bones are being pushed throughout any given roll, to some degree or another.

I agree. I have NEVER tapped to pure exhaustion. And I never will. I LOVE digging deep when i'm just totally 'spent'. The only two times I have almost tapped(maybe once, actually) when rolling with a wrestler who eventually mounted me and applied pressure to where I am EXHAUSTED and unable to BREATHE. For me, I look at it as a challenge. At worst, im going to have somebody submit me through exhaustion and basically sitting on my lungs. But im going to keep showing up. And if all I can gain is a few more seconds of survival every time I roll those types of opponents, then so be it! I will build, little by little until I posses the requisite skill to get out of the exhausted/mount/pressure submit. I guess my point is don't beat yourself up any longer than necessary. Be aware of your fault, Make a plan and figure out a way to go after it every day, inch by inch. This is what i do my best in trying to implement personally....
@djmyrick
@djmyrick 15 күн бұрын
Great insight. Thanks for sharing this. I agree, learning to fight through these positions will help us develop and improve in ways we will never know if we just let exhaustion win. And to your point about pressure, those can be legit submissions! I would separate exhaustion from pressure. If an opponent puts you in a position where you can no longer breathe - they win! Tap and learn to stay away from those positions, or escape earlier. Thanks again for watching and for the feedback.

Number one is the reason that I prefer (as a white belt) to go against blue and purple belts over some 300lb white belt putting all his weight on me in side control/mount.

I get that. But shouldn't we be prepared for any situation? You'd be doing yourself a disservice to not train with the 300lb white belt holding you down in side control. Everything is an opportunity.
@djmyrick
@djmyrick 19 күн бұрын
@@psykrobone9479 I definitely agree everything is an opportunity. And you're right; we need to be prepared for any situation. The tension is: how do you respond when you have a training partner who is not concerned for your safety? I think the weight is irrelevant. I'll train with anyone, but trust is earned. Most in jiu-jitsu look out for their training partners, but sadly, there are those who do not. To your point, belts do not prove they do one or the other. That is revealed by how they roll. My response was focused more on this aspect of it. Put me under side control all day; that's good for all of us!

@@djmyrick I agree. Was just responding to the other guy. If you feel your trust is being broken during a roll just disengage. But yea, every roll is an opportunity regardless of weight / belt.

I’ve tapped to pressure quite a few times, but I don’t think I’ve ever tapped to exhaustion. There have been times that I’ve considered it, but I don’t want to do that to my opponent or myself. Now, I will say that I’m guilty of watching the clock, seeing there’s a short amount of time left, and just holding my opponent in guard or half guard to avoid the submission before the buzzer. I don’t like doing that; it also kind of feels like cheating. Professor Sharpie has been challenging me to roll with my eyes closed; nothing exists in the roll except for me and my opponent. Time stops mattering when you shut everything else out. Great video, and great food for thought; keep it up!
@djmyrick

Thanks for the feedback! I will say, pressure can be a legit submission! And good wisdom from Coach Sharpie. There’s nothing like a roll where you are totally disconnected from everything except for the wave of that roll.

@chrismoreton

I started BJJ in my fifiies. On one of my very first rolls I tapped out to exhaustion - I had a big young blue belt on top of me, my heart felt like it wanted to burst, and I wasn't sure I could remember how to breathe. At that point, I didn't just feel I was tapping out of the roll, I felt I was tapping out of BJJ in general. My cardio has improved since then, but I wouldn't go back and advise that version of myself to carry on in that situation. I do agree though, after a year of training, I wouldn't tap to exhaustion, because I understand a little more about how to manage the situation and how not to gas out in the first place.
@djmyrick
@djmyrick Ай бұрын
I do think there is a balance, and yes, gotta show grace to white belts. I think it’s awesome and speaks to your growth - how you have learned to manage your energy more now. And to be fair it’s awesome anytime someone starts training, and if that begins in 40s or 50s that intensity of cardio demand is a lot harder than it is when we were in our 20s, or even 30s. Thanks for sharing this.
