Thank you for this video and the one with you hiking to the peak with your Mom! I used both of those to summit last Thursday with no issues. I am 65, large but in good shape. Trekking poles helped me, especially in the tricky parts. Using my arms to help take the weight off of my leg joints made a big difference, especially on the way down. Keep up the good work and thanks for the boost of confidence from both videos!

Have you considered tagging the prominence and isolation points of each state as well? I only ask because I know ND is kind of a pain since they built a subdivision on it a couple years ago.
@CameronHall88Күн бұрын
@OneMansOdyssey wow, I hadn't seen that. I'll have to look it up. I can barely manage to keep up with the highpoints. No way I could manage the big lists of prominence peaks you do.

The treeless featureless landscape gives you an idea of how difficult it was in the day to find your way around. Many settlers perished in this region.

The wife an I did this hike a few years ago in October. The trail had snow and ice. We didn't have any spikes or waling sticks. Almost go lost when we missed our turn to the summit. Walked an extra mile in 20 inches of snow. I can't wait to go back to SD. Thanks for bringing us along.

So, if I have a issues with heights I should stay away? I've hiked at Davis Mountains and Balancing Rock at Big Bend. I semi-freak out but I'm able to push thru.
@CameronHall8821 күн бұрын
@ev_p if you can push through, the couple sections with exposure are pretty short and are wide enough that you can stay relatively far from any sort of edge. I'd say it's a non issue for most hikers.

I love my Cloudburst! I camp and hunt in Florida swamps, so instead of hiking poles propping up the sides of my tarp, I use the sawed-off saplings which are in these woods by the gazillions. Even though I own a Warbonnet Ridgerunner, I could never get used to sleeping in it. So, every deer season I simply set up a TentCot under my Cloudburst and am very comfortable, come what may!

Great video Cameron. Very informative. I'm getting ready to tackle the outer mountain loop in November. Just curious, what was the highest volume of water you carried at any given point? From the video it appears you only filled up at boot canyon, fresno creek and the homer wilson cache?
@CameronHall88Ай бұрын
@JIrv-432 we did only fill up in Boot Canyon, Fresno, and a cache at Homer Wilson. I honestly can't remember exactly how much I carried at a time. Now that I've done the OML a couple different ways, as long as boot canyon had water in it, I wouldn't waste my time caching water. Or I would start and end my hike at Homer Wilson, like I did on my first hike. There was plenty of water at Fresno Creek. And from what I have been told, it is almost always that way. I don't think I ever carried over a gallon of water on this hike. I think I only had a 2L bladder and 2 water bottles. It did help that we camped near water on the Dodson. So I could refill multiple times. If we didn't do that, I probably would carry another 1L.

It's not too far out of the way if you're heading to Colorado. And we absolutely loved our time at Black Mesa State Park. It's not a well polished park, but it's quiet, there is so much wildlife, and it has quite a bit to keep kids entertained.
