Tossing aside my architectural cloak and becoming a certified asbestos guru, I got a commission to survey the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Arizona. As I worked through the master plan ing and building design, i became aware, more and more, that this was the work of a master and not student work with casual oversight. This commission was a big deal, right in his back yard, at the time. It is unfathomable that some apprentice would be able to fend off the GIANT EGO of the master during his winter visits. The signs are everywhere. Also as to the famous Biltmore Block: the blocks serve four fundamental design duties. The artist could NEVER have conceived if this. And the design is totally Wright. I have an original block and have studied it in depth. I also have a casting from an Adler and Sullivan building. Believe it or not if you computer draft the planes, depths, intersections and angmes, there is absolutely no way that this block was designed by any other genius than the Master. I plan to author a paper on my findings if I live long enough to finish my honey do list. Larry Sorenson Glendale, Arizona

While studying for several years at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and having some connections with Wright’s work in Illinois and Wisconsin, I would find myself debating his work with contemporaries like Corbusier, Noitra and Shindler. It boiled down to the Usonian and Prairie styles penchant to “decorate” the buildings with wood . My belief is and was that the offending wood was in all probability holding the damn thing up and that it lent a warmth and residential comfort to his buildings that the Villa Savoie and others completely lack. Still today I see young architects who blunder into a grand commission and end up with a foreboding art museum with mandatory plants and water. If you want to see the real contemporary thing, look up the desert school including The Jones Brothers, Will Bruder, Rich Fairbourbe, and Wendell Burdett. These guys carry the torch, make no compromises and produce FANTASTIC ORIGINAL WORK quietly in the rugged desert. If you want crown moldings and just the right shade of white paint, look elsewhere.

This seems furnished incorrectly. Would Loos, who is raving about space being appropriate to its function, make bedrooms and bathrooms huge?

@@mysigt_ The bathroom and the bedroom are not rooms that guests would typically see so I'd argue it's not that conspicuous. Rather, it is the case when the drawing rooms and the halls on the noble floor are decorated in a lavish manner, as in many palazzos.

Hello Gary, this is absolutely wonderful! You did such a great job on all the details. I am currently working on my master thesis and trying to model Villa Müller for Virtual Reality. But it's soo hard to understand the project as it looks like a huge labyrinth! Could you please share this model with me so that I can verify the accuracy of my model? I really appreciate any help. This video is a great help already. Thanks, Gary, you're awesome!
