Advantage plans should only be considered by folks who cannot afford original Medicare. Something is better than nothing. But if you can afford the additional $250-$300/month, you should be on original.

I've sold health insurance for 40 years. I have hundreds of satisfied client on MAPD plans. I'm on a MAPD plan. Less than 4% of all MAPD insureds ever hit their MOOP. I purchased hospital independent plan with riders to help pay costs while in the hospital.
@ChristopherWestfall10 күн бұрын
Brian, I am so glad for you that you found a plan that has, so far, worked for you. When you have a much larger pool of data from which to pull, like tens of thousands of seniors helped, you would have a much better understanding of the risks involved. I'm sure you also know that the hospital indemnity plan does not replace an HMO telling you that your course of care is simply NOT COVERED. I wish you continued success and health. May you never become one of those that tells me I was right and you should have listened.

Advantage plans are a scam. They are called Advantage plans because they plan to take advantage of the elderly. They are simply another insurance company that takes over Medicare with their own plans. They are contracted with Medicare to follow their guidelines- and Medicare is glad to do it because it saves them LOTS of money. Advantage plans are so cheap because they always deny when something serious happens. That free dental, eye care, and dental are scams as well- everytime you go any of those the docs tell you there is nothing wrong (so they don't have to do any work), then charge the plan for the visit. There are co-pays for everything and every year they offer less and less but the plan costs more and more. Last year they took away our $75 pharmacy card and stopped paying part of the plan B option for Medicare. I'm not going to mention all the fights I had with them because they tell you one thing, then won't keep any promises. They pull you in with all those promises. Yes, they pay for the little things- but you still have to pay co-pays, but if you need serious help, good luck. Get real Medicare and get the supplemental insurance that covers the 20% Medicare does not pay- it will cost around $400 to $500 a month, but you are covered on everything- especially when you really need help. Dr. Oz doesn't know the dark side of Advantage plans because he's never had one or had to deal with one and he is getting the wool pulled over his eyes just like the millions of elderly people who fell for it. Remember the old saying- if it sounds too good to be true, that's because it IS.

Wonder why all the commercials on tv are only touting the advantage plans - none are advocating regular Medicare … why? These Medicare ( why are they lying & saying the advantage plans are part C of Medicare when it has nothing to do with Medicare??? They are private insurance companies out to make make way more money than regular Medicare because they keep raking in money from the govt while denying services to patients who desperately need them, hoping you’ll die before they have to pay out for any services you need - we were on the advantage plan for 6 months & cd not get a desperately needed hernia surgery - we got back to regular Medicare & got the surgery done immediately. Also the people selling these advantage plans are paid 3 times or more money from these advantage plan companies than the regular Medicare plans. It all comes down to money- ever see anyone in Congress or the Senate on an advantage plan????

Re the Dr. Oz presentation. We can only hope he goes away as an aspirant to head CMS --- but I fear he won't BTW there were some early presidential candidates who shared his Medicare Advantage for all seniors leanings and actually a model for Universal cradle to grave health financing. Oz said it all when he said "lots more money in your piggy bank because it's free" -- incidentally brokers are non-compliant if they say "free" Oz and the on air broker believe TM with a supp and a MA plan are on par === the same. Maybe on paper but it's the execution of the plan where problems exist --- especially when expensive procedures are needed. BTW -- the on-line broker failed to mention that she earns about 2x +/- for an Advantage enrollment as opposed to a supp enrollment. That differential compensation is one of the reasons for the meteoric growth in MA Some beneficiaries are not even informed about med supp Extra comp and deceptive advertising and herd mentality among the senior population drive enrollments Something as important as my healthcare ---- free --- did I just win the lottery? Can't be! Managed care --- the carrier manages your care for their profit. Yet Advantage may be easily considered as the optimal situation --- the optimal solution meaning that our legislators will p-off the least amount of voters in a Medicare (Advantage) For All or Universal healthcare financing system . P T Barnum --- a sucker is born every minute. He's not Oz; he's the Pied Piper and you may recall how the Piper marched all the rats (suckers) right into the water

Advantage plans are a disaster. Oz is going to be bad for Medicare. The ones that are new to retirement are the only ones signing up for the “Advantage “. It’s fine until you encounter medical problems. I would not recommend to anybody. Basically you have worked your whole life to reach retirement . Then are you going to sell your Medicare to a greedy dollar driven Insurance company ? I hope not!

Many us who are low income but do not qualify for Medicaid can't afford the both the monthly plan B cost of $174.70 plus the $150 or more for a supplement plan to the original Medicare. For me and my husband it would be close to $700 or more a month. Add that our other monthly bills and we would be broke.

So-called “Advantage plans” are pure hell!!! Denial of coverage, few providers (mostly unqualified to practice), no providers in many areas, the benefit cards cause numerous problems and a lot of stress each month, it’s hard to get preauthorizations, and they send out tons of mail each month. Many doctors call them “DISADVANTAGE PLANS.” You end up going without needed treatments and surgeries, and even necessary hospitalizations are not always covered on “Advantage plans. They bait you with promised perks (that are mostly unachievable), but deny coverage leaving us sick, in pain, and costing lives because if inadequate treatment. They are only useful if you have no health problems because the monthly card allows you to buy lots of junk food and some medical supplies listed in their catalogue.

Dr. Oz is a bad choice. He is not going to do what is best for us. Those of us at the bottom can not afford this. I just spent a year with an HMO that denied every claim that wasn't a general office call at my plan doctor. All the denials were for covered facilities and services. I had to fight to get anything paid. First submissions were always denied. I have never dealt with this in the past. The Insurance industry is a scam. Greed is running rampant.

I deal with denied surgeries, outpatient services, or inpatient hospitalizations. Advantage plans have to pre-authorize everything. They take their good old time making a decision and make you go through all other options first. They don’t care if you are in pain or dying. They deny a lot of chemotherapy, and if you need a heart valve replaced, they will deny that too. If the hospital provides the service without getting the authorization, you may not get a bill but the hospital gets stuck with it. This just drives the cost of healthcare up. Oh and forget sub acute care after your acute hospitalization, they take days to decide if you need it- which they think you don’t. The subacute facilities won’t accept the patients due to the insurance they have , likely because they don’t get reimbursed correctly. This happens over and over. It’s a viscous cycle. The only people who benefit are the heads of these big insurance companies. If you can afford straight Medicare with a gap plan, do that. You get one chance to go back to Medicare within or just after the first year, after that it’s very hard or impossible to change back if you go with an advantage plan - especially if you have any chronic problem like hypertension, diabetes, a previous cancer, or anything you take chronic medications for.

Oz is scum, feeding off the bottom of the tank of vultures. These medicare advantage plans are horrible for pts as well as physicians. The advantage is for the insurance companies. It is bad enough, even with our reg. insurance to get coverage, as they hide things in the fine print so that they do not have to cover. My husband shared he will work as long as possible, hopefully until he is 70, but as a middleclass couple, the key will be to remain healthy. We refuse to use the advantage plan. It benefits no one.
@sassylady200111 күн бұрын
When you get ready to go on Medicare, if you get advice or talk to someone who ONLY discusses advantage plans, run. You must talk to someone who will discuss regular Medicare AND advantage plans so that you know the truth - and that if you take an advantage plan first, if you want to move to Medicare, you will have to go through underwriting and can now be refused for Medicare coverage. I had terrible advice when I started on Medicare when I was 74. The person I trusted to advice me ONLY talked about the plan SHE and her husband were on...and that was a local advantage plan. Now, because I have had angina about 3 times 6 years ago and take a medication to prevent angina, I have been told that underwriting will deny me moving to regular Medicare and I must stay on an advantage plan. Because I trusted this person, I was screwed - when initially I could have gotton on original medicare regardless of the angina. But becase she was recommended by my employer, and she talked about only one advantage plan, and not Medicare, I trusted her, and I got screwed

The cheapest part D, RX, in my area is $40/ month, which used to be $12.00. We still pay high premium on original Medicare. There shouldn't be a penalty for not get'n partD on initial start up. I pay a monthly penalty bc I wasn't on expensive meds & thot why pay for something I don't need & wasn't told I'd pay penalty for not get'n it. I can't afford monthly premium for PartD to go back on original Medicare. I could if Medicare dropped that hugh monthly premium but they're gonna keep us hostages one way or another 😢😡
