The sea to summit mug has been the key to my coffee brewing system for 5 or 6 years now; I use it even at home. Drill a 1/8 hole in rubber base between center and edge. Use #4 V shaped filter, don't fold seams, and position at 90° from hole. This allows for a free but contolled flow of coffee into cup and a nearly perfect brew and easy clean up

get an XL size, NOT regular size Trifecta bivy from 2GoSystems. It's made of reflective tyvek. Envelope it in a bag made of two fo the 2 person SOL reflective plastic "heat sheets". (3 ozs each. Tape one side of the heat sheets togther and then tape in a couple of sleeping bag zippers. Use this "envelope" around the Trifecta. Wear a 1/2 lb tyvek coverall over your clothing, with its booties and hoodie. Pull a 1 lb net hammock and a ridgeline thru the bivy, Pull another ridgeline thru the envelope, outside of the bivy. If you exercise a bit, have a hot meal and a hot drink, and put hot rocks or hot water bottles in the foot box of the bivy, wear a balaclava, shemagh, sock liners, unlaced shoes, gloves, take a sedative, wear earplugs and a sleep mask, this system will let you sleep ok at 34F in wind and rain. I forgot, I use a 1 lb buttpack and a 1.5 lb daypack, I had to add a much wider, stiffer belt to the fannypack. The sleep/shelter system is lashed to the top of the buttpack and the daypack rides on the gear. A heavy duty 55 gallon drum liner covers everything. A bit of tape, some spring clamps, and a 3x6 ft hunk of clear PEVA shower curtain let you convert this system into a Kochanski supershelter. use a couple of 4 log Alternative Swedish fire torches to ignite a Siberian log fire, and you can get thru a night at 0F. YT vids around both of these fire lays

My last 2 trips I've rocked the MSR Frontrange. Its somewhere in between but mostly a tarp... it has worked well for winter camping so far! I'm the opposite of ultra light either way 😂😂

Great introduction into freezer bag cooking! Yet I'd like to disagree with your comments about pasta and ramen. If you don't look for the traditional varieties which request all long boiling time but search for modern convenience food, you get easily dozens of options in every supermarket. There are plenty of noodles which are totally perfect for freezer bag hydrating with hot water, it simply depends on type resp. brand you purchase. For example all kind of so called cup noodles (basically some kind of ramen which come into a plastic cup which is simply filled up with hot water) are totally perfect, and there are other noodles in traditional ramen style packs which are already precooked and pre-fried like e.g. all varieties from wai-wai brand. You can eat them even without any further preparation cold, just as a snack. Also with common pasta you have just to select the varieties which are fast boiling (usually everything for which cooking instructions tell <3 minutes of boiling works, whiles the one with 10 min boiling like traditional spaghetti won't work). There are even whole ready-to-eat meals with spirali or elbow pasta which are usually meant to be rehydrated by simply putting hot water on top. There is also no danger for the freezer bag if you smash your noodles already in the pack in which you purchase them. Pinching afterwards a little hole inside the pack and getting the air out reduces the volume to 50%. And of course you would not carry the cup noodles in their original voluminous cup but fill them directly in a ziplock or your freezer bag in order to reduce the volume.

I save all my gear because I like to take people out on occasion with me on trips and it’s always nice to get newbies out and them not have to spend a bunch of money to enjoy their time with me. Also I’ve gathered enough gear that I’ve been able to create bug out bags for both my girls. If anything ever happens I have enough stuff to support a family of 5…and a cat…lol

I want to look into a tarp tent for my future tent. Just used a Big Agnes Blacktail 2 Hotel in winter camping. Not ideal but boy the vestibule was super nice. Also wasn’t backpacking. We had a camper van to which my father slept in. So we brought a ton of gear.

Reusing single-use plastic bottles in place of Nalgene bottles assures you trade ingestion of chemicals and microplastics for losing a few grams of weight. If duh isn’t the first word that comes to mind you might need a brain hack too.

Sleeping on a bed of pine boughs seems preferable to a CCF pad. I would take a pool floatation pad with a built in pillow back in the day when I backpacked only in the summer and was broke af.

I couldn't go through all the comments, so I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this. Try filling your inflatable pad, then lay on your side and let some air out until just before your hip touches the ground. It works for me.

i went on my first backpacking adventure last September and i struggled in the dark like a fool for the better part of an hour trying my hardest to hang my bear bag. I did not do it nearly as pro as you just demoed. The bag was to heavy, I couldn't throw it over a branch good enough, and to boot i couldn't pull the cord at all. Just a huge fail. Thank you for this video and i am totally going to follow you for more tips as I really enjoyed my time in the woods and am excited to adventure again.

This video resulted in me hitting the Subscribe button. Good, well thought out content. It often use single wall shelters, and sometimes even free-standing tents depending on the trip, but my go-to shelter is a tarp. I don’t like condensation and find tarps allow for a lot more flexibility when looking for a place to sleep. I’m also much more of a hiker than a camper. Like you mention though, a lot depends on the trail. If I am camping where there are a lot of people I will probably use a single wall shelters. Thanks for the video.

Fewer bugs are a good thing. Btw, the opposite of "many" is "few." These terms apply to something that is measured in individual units. "Less people" is especially hard to hear for someone who was taught the value of clear and concise communication habits. Btw, I agree with his assessment. More space for less weight (fewer ounces/grams) is a win! 😊
