I grew up in the 70's and, for a long time, thought that the Teddy Boys of that era simply copied the original 50's look. Recently, on a nostalgic whim I wanted a pair of creepers just like the ones I grew up with, only to discover from a book by Ray Ferris and Julian Lord that the original (George Cox, I think) creepers had soles of no more than one inch thick! I learned a lot about the original Teddy Boys from that book and, as you say, the 50's Teds didn't sport ultra long sideburns or wear brightly coloured drapes etc. Bit of an eye opener as I grew up with Showaddywaddy, Mud, etc. ! I think Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood kind of highjacked the original look and exaggerated it for punk, maybe. Still, I grew up in the 70's, so for me a pair of thicker crepe shoes was nostalgic, and I eventually found a pair and bought them! Not the original 50's look, but a part of my own youth I guess, which is what I wanted. The book is a really good read!
