Don't know how rare this is on Merseyrail in particular but to my knowledge to see a freight train underground is damn rare. Well done mate good catch

It is funny to think a niche design like the 73 is seen everywhere now.

Yes, down to the re-engineering by Brush and a much more powerful Diesel engine installed. Designated Class 73/9

@@Martindyna I remember reading about them first in Rail Enthusiast not long after the magazine was launched. Southern exotica to this LMR boy. Super locos!

@@clangerbasher Yes indeed, so versatile. I miss them operating the fixed formation ‘Gatwick Express’ with the nice BR Mk 2 carriages. As you probably know the traction motors are now Chopper controlled (the old resistance / Series / Parallel etc arrangement having been removed.

@@Martindyna My sister's first boyfriend collected numbers. And one day I went to London for an exhibition with him and we went out to look at the Gatwick Express when down there just for the 73's. It is a broad hobby. He liked his numbers and I had a more academic interest in design.

well the class 73 have been seen in scotland and they are the uk's first bi mode loco and the uks first hybrid train, that cause take electricity directly from 750v dc third rail and operate with an onboard diesel engine that drives a huge dc alternator set to make dc power for the motors
@Martindyna
@Martindyna 14 күн бұрын
Alternators are always AC, this is then rectified for the DC motors. The 73/9 has modern Chopper control, the resistance & Series / Parallel etc. connection equipment has been removed.

They have been useful locos to have lasted 60 years, but after the Co-Bos they must be the ugliest piece of metal ever to run on a railway. Just a square container-like metal box.

Have they done away with the ‘Tripcock’ safety system? Nothing was allowed underground without a working Tripcock in days gone by, so would assume the line was closed to all other traffic whilst this took place?

I’m excited for everything except the noise it makes. For me the class 507s and 508s had such an iconic sound, yet the triple 7s’ sound is quite boring and squeaky. I guess it isn’t too bad though, I’m still looking forward for them to be in service hopefully later this year!

I am not from UK or English speaking country, but "Dick" sounds like mans penis... "Mab" who knows, but "butt" is basically an ass right? so by looking at this train name is something like dick and ass... Is this intentional - a joke or this is absolutely serious name and it would be a shame to laugh at it? as someone might think whats on your mind to think about Dick Mabbutt as penis and ass... :)
