Ya, cool documentary. Art Tatum had a very notable virtuosity. The point about musical lineage and influences is very important, and explains how trends in jazz emerged.

What a fabulous technique but rather boring - too many fast runs - in this docu. at least. Little of melodic interest as Monk could and of course Garner.

Art Tatum, as unfathomable as his playing could be, serves the music with his improv, not just his own ambition.

Really enjoyable for a music nerd like me. The Les Paul content alone is priceless, but Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, various professors who actually know this music, etc. all add significant detail and analysis. As others have said, all music documentaries should strive to be this good.

Earl Hines is far superior to him. Jazz is a soloist's art, not a technique show-off.

GREAT - Thank You for this. Just as a footnote, Stanley Dance's biography states, "According to the pianist Teddy Wilson and the saxophonist Eddie Barefield, "Art Tatum's favorite jazz piano player was Earl Hines. He [Tatum] used to buy all of Earl's records and would improvise on them. He'd play the record but he'd improvise over what Earl was doing ... course, when you heard Art play you didn't hear nothing of anybody but Art. But he got his ideas from Earl's style of playing - but Earl never knew that". I'd say go see the Earl Hines docu here on KZbin if you haven't seen - and heard! - it. It's completely amazing.

Hola.
