To me, the question isn't so much "Would you kill Hitler", but rather "When do you kill Hitler?"

Why would Herbert Lom's character need to make a note of something that significant? Did his character have early onset of dementia and he didn't want to forget?

There's a big difference in changing past events, that has already have happened, than changing events that have not yet happened. If someone had killed Hitler people that might've not met, or died during the war could create a completely different timeline that would eventually cause more damage than what WW2 did. And a future of Stilson causing WW3, might've caused a backlash, we never saw missiles landing at their intended targets, for all we know what he wanted to do, might've gotten removed from office, and any future presidential powers dealing with nukes would've been removed. Bottom line it's a role of the dice on how you want to play.

It’s been said that anyone can be killed…if the person is willing to give up their life. The sad part about the Hitler Question is that in reality there were a number of actual attempts to assassinate him. Once a bomb was placed in a location where Hitler was to speak…he did, but left early. The bomb exploded and would have killed him. Also, a young Army Officer was going to be part of a demonstration for Hitler…and he was going to detonate a bomb he was carrying in his overcoat…he was to grab Hitler and trigger the bomb. But Hitler cut the tour short and the Officer didn’t get the chance. Too bad. Hitler arguably caused 50-60 million deaths and then caused the expansion of the Soviet Union.

You have to be realistic about these scenarios. The ripple effects could and most likely would be catastrophic. Perhaps more destructive than the war. Technology that was never invented because the critical need wasn’t there. The numerous uncounted people who were never born because their parents never met. Communism not blunted by Facism. The list goes on. As mentioned in “The Final Countdown “ things should only happen once. We should not interfere.

Punk rock is nearly 50 years old as still as fresh and cutting as ever. The people that is listened and wore the spiked hair, chains etc are now in their 60s and 70s. If they go into a care home, I hope they raise hell and be the rebels they were in their youth.

Walken is wildly great in this. The loss, the indecision, the guilt, the suffering. He takes what was already one of King's best characters and elevates him. David Cronenberg's superb direction doesn't hurt.

King said that Cronenberg and Boam, ( the screenplay writer, ) had " improved and intensified the narrative. " I agree. A great cast and a superb performance by Walken elevate this story of a man whose destiny is the death of him. Lom was perfect.
